If Shadow Milk was the first to corrupt and he did so because his job was incredibly isolating and lonely, it means that it was silence that kickstarted the chain.

The Fount of Knowledge needed a support system. He longed for companionship and for someone who understood him, someone who could treat him as more than his title. He needed solidarity.

Silent Salt lived right next to him. They were neighbors. And still he didn’t know Shadow Milk needed help because he also reduced them to their jobs. When Salt corrupts he blames himself, he treats the beasts like they failed as people for failing at their jobs. It’s why he couldn’t help Fount even if he had reached out. He legitimately sees them as nothing more than their virtues, meanwhile Shadow Milk ached to be something more.

And isn’t it so ironic that the virtue of solidarity, a position that demands a level of empathy and understanding for others even if they aren’t from the same background as you, failed to see what was right under his nose?

When Fount of Knowledge needed solidarity, he was greeted with silence.
