Maia and Csethiro Goblinemperor are kinda the funniest pairing in the world... pious non-confrontational man who accidentally became emperor and would LOVE to just go and be a monk or something, put in an arranged marriage with an academic-jock swordswoman whose life dream is to get to say really loudly WHAT SIR, DO YOU QUARRELL?? filled out that "performative male traits" checklist that's going around and while I didn't go in with any particularly high expectations I was still kind of thrown by how few of the 100ish items on the list actually seem to be any kind of performance at all. there was, like, one question specifically copping to posting lists of books that you've never actually read, which I suppose counts, but many other questions that seem to have deemed actually reading books to also be performative. reading a book, ESPECIALLY in public where anyone might see you, is apparently a huge performative male trait, which I guess makes me extremely guilty given that I'm prone to the ultimate nerd maneuver of reading while I walk to or from work. maybe I can get away with that, since I'm a woman, but it seems for men the only safe option is to either keep your reading to yourself or maybe never become literate in the first place, to be safe.

owning or god forbid using tote bags is performative, apparently, so that's another strike against me. enjoying matcha is bad for reasons that are lost on me since I'm not a coffee or tea guy, but I assume that if you are then the nature of matcha sins is probably totally rational. making playlists is bad, taking photos is bad, somehow even decorating your house with the photos you've taken is apparently bad. having a labubu also is suspect, and while I do agree broadly with criticism of overproduced and overpriced fad items that are inevitable landfill fodder and operate as a shadowy gambling system that's a solidly gender neutral criticism, whereas the issue here seems to be that a man engaging in an act of silliness is innately suspect.

my professor’s take is that mary shelley is feminizing victor throughout the novel, as a way of flipping gender roles and putting a male character through female experiences.

evidence as explained:

victor is creating life. he is putting his health at risk (spends two years with little sleep or socialization) to bring life forth into this world

his illness after he is shocked by the creature coming to life is akin to both ‘hysteria’ and postpartum depression

he pretty much swoons, let’s be honest

henry clerval, a man who has been characterized as manly and heroic, has to chase after damsel-in-distress victor and care for him as he convalesces 

afterward, he hides what he did and went through, for fear that others will label him crazy and emotional and not believe him. sound familiar?

Victor in general is more emotional than the other characters and is constantly tempering his reactions to not be seen as irrational 

the book does not otherwise have central female characters 

Also, Shelley’s mother died in childbirth. It’s interesting, then, that Shelley presents the creation of life as something horrific and damaging. She parallels Victor with her mother.

in conclusion, Frankenstein (1818) by Mary  Wollstonecraft Shelley is one of the first examples of mpreg in English literature

I think the only true conclusion one could ever draw about Sabrina carpenter from her music is that she has a kinda weird relationship with gender, where she can never truly decide if being a woman is a good & powerful thing or a bad & weakening thing, and she can never decide if that’s her own fault or the fault of the male society in which she lives. this is not a criticism to be clear: that seems like a very normal way to engage with the world to me. it’s just funny to me that the seemingly most personally revealing aspect of her music is the way she seems to have no idea how to live as a straight woman.
