A session with Ahona Dattagupta, an NID Film and Video Communication Graduate talked to the resQcode team about her documentary film made about the Naqqar khana or Naubat khana in Ahmedabad.It is a traditional practise of playing drums to call people for namaaz, or in olden days to alert people that the kings are leaving the court. They would sit on tall fort gates and be beating the drums to signal the civilians about anything.

Naqara, is a large drum that was used by the Mongols in battle. The drum itself was so large it was necessary to have it carried in to battle by a beast of burden, traditionally a camel. Its main use was as a signaling device, to let warriors know when an attack, especially a surprise attack, begin.

It is a practice that must be maintained for heritage conservation in Ahmedabad.Currently, because these fort gates come over the busy roads in the old city, several are being demolished.

After a brief talk with Chewang in the afternoon yesterday and a follow up conversation with Praveen, initial brainstorming and secondary research over the Sikkim Earthquake on the 18th of September, last sunday.

Focussed group discussion with Professor Jogi, some of his Faculty development Programme students, and Sajith Gopinath.

The discussion took a whole new perspective of how an unorganised society deals with rapid action disaster response. How can individuals help each other because the critical time of saving lives is without the help of any centralised system.

We discussed about predicting scenarios when you have had 'close shaves'.

The urgency of knowing TYING TECHNIQUES can be useful in several disaster scenarios.

It is only in a disaster scenario do you understand the value of floatation/the value of weight

What could be the new spaces for urgency?

What could be the precautionary points in a house?

Can Emergency System be made a BRANDED SYSTEM, where people's opinion of emergency is more urgent than anything else that they have experienced in their lives.

The evening lasted long till half past eight in the night.

We have categorised our brainstorming into two phases: the man made disasters and the geological disasters, based on the fact that an increase in geological disasters are a sign for humankind to realise that something has gone wrong at the root and cause of our interventions on earth.
