Michael Chapman (1935 - 2020) was known as Chappy to his friends and co-workers on set. Michael began as a camera operator working on Cassavetes' HUSBANDS, Pakula's KLUTE, Coppola's THE GODFATHER, and Spielberg's JAWS. Chappy would later make a name for himself as a renowned cinematographer mentored by Gordon Willis and becoming an essential component to filmmakers like Hal Ashby, Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, Robert Towne, and Philip Kaufman. Ron Cobb (2020) was a Disney animator turned production designer on some of the biggest movies in cinema. At 17, Ron began his career as an “inbetweener” animator on SLEEPING BEAUTY. Cobb would also become known for his editorial political cartoons and the covers for Forest Ackerman’s FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND Magazine. Ron would later move into production design after working with Dan O’Bannon on John Carpenter’s DARK STAR. From there Ron would create design work for The Nostromo in ALIEN, crafting Cantina aliens in STAR WARS, time machined The DeLorean in BACK TO THE FUTURE, designed the vehicles of THE LAST STARFIGHTER, drafted the underwater gear of THE ABYSS, and fleshed out the look of Milius’ fantasy epic for CONAN THE BARBARIAN. In 1980, Ron met Steven Spielberg while directing RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Steven had Ron start storyboarding one of his future films, WATCH THE SKIES. A follow up to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS about a true-life claim of a Kentucky family's alien encounter. Steven hired John Sayles pen the screenplay and a number of Ron's ideas were incorporated into the fairly menacing and horrific first-draft titled NIGHT SKIES. Impressed by Ron's work, Steven offered him to direct despite him never directing anything before. But the project didn't go much further after Steven had a change of heart and wanted to create a more personal story that was later fleshed out by Melissa Mathison. Thus E.T. was born and NIGHT SKIES was dead. Ron took a cameo in the film but wasn't impressed by Spielberg's sentimental product. That was until Ron's wife found a $7,500 "kill fee" in the original NIGHT SKIES contract should the project be terminated. Since NIGHT SKIES eventually became ET he was also due 1% net profits. Michael Lonsdale (1931 - 2020) was the Parisian born actor who tried to take over the world from his orbiting space station in MOONRAKER. Ernie Orsatti (1940 - 2020) was a Beverly Hills native who started in the movie business at a young age and accumulated nearly 140 credits on tv and movies. Ernie would do motorcycle stunt work on THE STAR SPANGLED GIRL, had his neck broken by Charles Bronson in THE MECHANIC, and was known for his athletic prowess on films like THE TOWERING INFERNO, THE SWARM, THE CAR, BLIND FURY, FALLEN, ALIEN: RESURRECTION, and many more. 🚢 But Ernie's claim to fame would be the death-defying plunge into the dining hall of The S.S. Poseidon. In the 1972 disaster flick THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, Ernie was hired as an actor and had no professional training as a stunt man. Orsatti was tasked to make the 30-foot fall into the inverted skylight of the capsized ship. It's one of those stunts that you have to see in person. Actors that were not on call that day, like Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine, showed up with their families to watch the 26-year-old actor make the fall to his character's doom. Ben Cross (1947 - 2020) was a London born stage and screen actor. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Ben took a small roll in A BRIDGE TOO FAR with Sean Connery and Michael Caine. That same year he would become a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company before gaining wider attention in the stage rendition of CHICAGO. He would find roles in movies like FIRST NIGHT as well as the vampire Barnabas Collins in the 1991 revival series of the gothic soap opera, DARK SHADOWS. Jiří Menzel (1938 - 2020) was an actor, writer, and one of the leading filmmakers of the Czech New Wave of the 1960s. In 1966 Jiri released his first film CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Unlike most of his colleagues like Milos Forman, Jan Nemec, and Ivan Passer, Menzel did not emigrate after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia of 1968. 🎞 In 1969, Jiri finished his film LARKS ON A STRING, a tragic description of life under totalitarian rule, and was immediately banned by the communist regime. After the anti-communist revolution in 1989, the film was released and won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. Dame Diana Rigg (1938 - 2020) was a British actress who would become an iconic force on both stage and screen who excelled at portraying sharp-witted female characters. Diana found fame from 1965-68 as Emma Peel on the British spy series THE AVENGERS. The cat-suited, high-kicking, femme fatale became an empowering and iconic symbol of the Swinging 60s. She would find more acclaim in projects like IN THIS HOUSE OF BREDE, VICTORIA & ALBERT, and for her portrayal of Mrs. Danvers in the 1997 REBECCA miniseries. 🎞 One of her most notable characters on screen came from Tracy, the only Bond girl to coerce 007 to the alter in 1969's ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. Chadwick Boseman (1976 - 2020) was an incredibly talented actor and role model for a young generation of film fans. Before Marvel, Chadwick portrayed a number of black American icons from Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in GET ON UP, and Thurgood Marshall in MARSHALL. Boseman would most recently find success alongside Spike Lee Vietnam opus in DA 5 BLOODS. But it was Ryan Coogler’s BLACK PANTHER that would solidify Chadwick as a superstar. Wilford Brimley (1934 - 2020) entered the field at the assistance of his pal Robert Duvall. He first found his way on screen as an extra and stuntman in various Westerns, including the original TRUE GRIT and Burt Lancaster’s LAWMAN. Brimley’s big breakthrough was in the 1970s television series THE WALTON’S, playing mountain man Horace Brimley. 🎞 After his work in THE CHINA SYNDROME and THE THING, Brimley caught the attention of Ron Howard thanks to a small role in THE NATURAL, and soon found his way into the hearts of a generation of children as Grandpa Luckett in the oddball sci-fo adventure COCOON. Alan Parker (1944 - 2020) made an audacious first feature in 1976 with BUGSY MALONE, his depression-era gangster musical cast entirely of children. However, Alan proved he was more than slapstick sight gags and stylish choreography as he followed up his second feature with the gritty prison drama MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. This would earn Alan his first of two Best Director nominations alongside 1988's MISSISSIPPI BURNING. 🎞 Parker would prove to be a director with a wide range of talent rarely sticking to a particular genre (other than many of his films incorporating strong musical elements). Olivia de Havilland (1916 - 2020) was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden age of Hollywood. She rose to fame playing the damsel in distress in Errol Flynn’s Warner Bros. adventure films like CAPTAIN BLOOD and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD. Although in real life Olivia refused to wait for someone to save her as she looked to end her contact extension with WB and took them to court. John Saxon (1935 - 2020) was the Brooklyn native who grew up to become the go-to actor for police officers and detectives. John began his his career under the tutelage of Stella Adler and began a contract with Universal in the mid ‘50’s playing alongside Hollywood titans like Debbie Reynolds, Rex Harrison, Marlon Brando, Burt Lancaster, and others. Grant Imahara (1970 - 2020) was an LA-born roboticist and electrical engineer who delighted a generation of tinkerers, curiosity seekers, and movie fans as one of the co-hosts of MYTHBUSTERS. After graduating from USC Imahara landed a gig at Lucasfilm's THX and ILM divisions. For the next 9 years, Grant rose to chief model maker specializing in animatronics and providing some of the best practical effects to films like the STAR WARS prequels, THE MATRIX RELOADED & REVOLUTIONS, GALAXY QUEST, THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK, A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, VAN HELSING, and TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES. Once CG imagery had firmly supplanted itself ahead of practical effects in the early 2000s Grant was approached by fellow ILM colleague Tony Belleci to join the Discovery Channel's MYTHBUSTERS crew. In season 3 Grant became a mainstay of the series. Earl Cameron (1917 - 2020) was the Bermudian born actor whose move to England in 1939 would later lead him to become one of the first black performers to break into the British mainstream. Earl's breakout role in the 1951 film noir POOL OF LONDON was profound not just because he co-starred a time with the black leading man was virtually nonexistent on British screens but his character was also involved in an interracial romance (the first in British cinema history) between a white woman, played by Susan Shaw. • Unfortunately, Earl would often be overlooked and have to take much smaller roles, like Bond's chauffeur in THUNDERBALL, as British directors would look to African-American actors like Sidney Poitier, Ossie Davis, and Brock Peters to fill in the leading roles. • Earl also had a very robust career on television with roles on DANGER MAN, THE PRISONER, even finding his way onto the DOCTOR WHO in 1966. In his story, 'The Tenth Planet' Earl portrayed the first black astronaut ever onscreen (his suit was famously repurposed for the bounty hunter Bossk in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK). • After almost 40 years of work on stage and screen Cameron later gave up acting in the late 70s and moved to The Solomon Islands with his family, running an ice cream shop called Mr. B-Kool.
