RETROISM IV - 4/25/2013
It's springtime in NYC! As the city gets warmer, we are proud to announce the return of Retroism. We are back - harder, better and stronger than ever! Come join us Thursday, April 25th at the Vault @ Element for our "Over the top" party. Doors open at 8pm. No cover.
Sitting on top of the world
Will you find what you’re looking for?
Once in a while, good things fall into place on their own. While no success comes without struggle, sometimes the stars line up just right -- usually when we’ve focus our energies on the things that mean the most to us. When you follow your passions and do what you love, the rest will follow. That one-in-a-million shot is worth the hustle.
Data’s song “One in a Million” tells a hero’s story of “waiting for a girl like you to come along” but only hints at seizing the moment for good.
We’d add to the story’s intrigue one piece of advice: Do what inspires you. Your moment won’t come along if you’re not doing what you’re born to do.
Join us in doing what we love next Friday at Element. We’ll be the ones in the booth, sitting on top of the world.
Life is a prism
Undulating colors. Undulating sounds. The lens through which we see the world.
Tonight we’re marveling at the power of perception.
There are square corners in life, and there’s the way we cut around them when we’re inspired or see a more creative way. The goal is to break through to new ideas on the other side. The prism of creativity is complex. Your view is unique, maybe even groundbreaking. No two people interpret an idea -- a song, an image -- exactly the same way. What matters, is that you’re inspired. When you’re true to yourself, there’s no wrong way to be.
Speaking of rocks (and prisms), Revolt rocks our world with this gem of a song (pun-tastic!). Check it out. Comment. Come party with us.
RETROISM III @ THE VAULT - 2/15/2013
Still sore from the last party, guess what? We'll be be back at the Vault, Friday February 15th for a night full of Electro, Nu-Disco, Filter House and Art!
Girls just want to have fun
Thanks to all our guests for coming out to Element Friday! To those who didn’t make it out, we’ll give you a pass this time, and a track to get you pumped for our next event in two weeks. We know you just wanna have fun. So we’re keeping the good times rolling after a great turnout Friday, and wrapping up the weekend with Anthony Atcherley’s “Oh Girl!” -- a remix of Hall and Oats with a Filter House beat that will get you on the floor, or through the week. Until next time!
Urban defies order
Maybe you’re bogged down in the old routine and in need of some Friday-night chaos. Or maybe you’re ready for a steady dose of dance music spun by the DJs of Retroism every other Friday on the Lower East Side.
Defiant order is just what the doctor ordered. Inspired by the track title “Birdy Nam Nam - Defiant Order” (Breakbot Mix), we’re celebrating the oxymoronic order of chaos. All you smarties and yes, you intuitives, too: The music- and the mathematically-minded alike can appreciate the real Chaos Theory, that out of chaos comes order. Coaxing brilliance out of madness probably got us some of the beats in our queue right now. We’re thinking, you’re going to want to get in on the inspiration. Any night can lead to a perfect storm, a serendipitous mistake or a chance discovery. So come get crazy with us tomorrow night in the Vault at Element on Houston. Wanderlust awaits.
The power of minimal
Originally a movement in visual arts and design, minimalism seeks to reveal the essence of a work by eliminating all non-essential forms, features and concepts.
In other words, keep it clean and simple. We don’t need frills or ornamentation to have a good time.
Join us this Friday for a night of simple pleasures with good people, visual arts and great music!
Ride to the perfect groove
Sexy ’80s and ’90s looks are back in style. We’re loving this edgy, effortless biker style. The rounded grunge sunglasses, the essential ’90s bleach out, the collection of bangles (an “arm party” if you will), highwaisted jean cutoffs, and of course, a crop top. The subject of scandal in Madonna’s early career in the 1980s and a statement of empowerment during the bohemian ’60s and ’70s before that, the crop top is, historically, pretty inspiring. Retroism is about reflecting on the underlying cultural roots of trends in music and fashion. Besides the sex appeal, the crop top in its origin stood for something. What the midriff-bearers had in common? They were riding to their own grooves. See ever-cool girl pictured here.
The build and release
The national holiday and Inaugural Ceremony made Monday a major day for those of us in the U.S. Not to mention, we’re digging the short week. Now it’s almost Friday and we’re feeling Cherokee’s track “Sable Doux” as a warm-up to the weekend. Like the strides and setbacks of the day-to-day, politicking whether you like it or not, and just about any of life’s routines, this smooth mix is all about rise and fall, build and release, as it alternates between intervals of calm and swells of bass. Like the ebb and flow of the tide, which, fittingly, is featured in the intro and throughout the track. Twice a month with Retroism, we’ll be kicking off the weekend to break up your weekly grind and take the Lower East Side arts crowd from downtempo chill to uptempo dancing through the night. This track builds and releases the way every Friday night should. We’ll show you how at our second event, Friday, Feb. 1.
Standout elements: Infectious beat, Nu-Disco horns. Feels like: A party mix on a houseboat. If you can’t find your conch shell, put this up to your ear for the undulating sounds of the tide rolling in to shore. Makes you wanna: Free your arms. Set your drink down and dance. But we don’t need to convince you to get up. Just listen.
RETROISM II @ THE VAULT - 2/1/2013
We’ll be back at the Vault, Friday February 1st. Looking forward to the next opportunity to party and share our passion for great electronic music and art!

Retroism - Definition II
Some say life was better in previous times. Others say the future will bring a golden age of harmony. We say there was never a better time than this very moment. We all have the choice to seize the moment, to begin creating a perfect future right now. Dream big, and live even larger. The things we regret the most, are the things we never did.
We are looking forward to making your dreams come true this Friday!
Retroism - Definition I
“Qui imite, évoque ou exalte les mœurs et la mode d'une époque du passé récent.”
Which imitates, suggests the trends and fashion of an era relative to a closer past. We are inspired by the 80s, but we also love the art and scene of the 60s. At Retroism we feel music, art and film need to be redefined. The current model is outdated, now is the time to take risks, to break the rules, to accomplish something. But one can’t just go against the system blindly, we still need to remember where we came from.
Join us this Friday for a great night!
