We had a wonderful weekend long party, and learned so much about The Carlyle Hotel’s unique place in New York’s history during our expedition there. Of course we’ll set forth again for lunch in the restaurant, tea in the gallery, nightcaps in Bemelman’s and cabaret dinners in Cafe Carlyle but if you couldn’t join us, this 1979 performance by Bobby Short will go a long way to bringing you along.

The Revelry Society loves to party at Gene’s, a mainstay on the edge of Greenwich Village that’s been serving classics like this shrimp cocktail since 1919. Few things pair with a martini as well as shrimp dipped in pools of horseradish and ketchup-laced cocktail sauce, crispy fresh cut vegetables, bread with copious amounts of butter, and the connection to a near century of dinners that have been hosted in this room.

If you booked dinner at Windows on the World between 1981 and 1993, you probably spoke to Deborah Rodi on the telephone. Known to all as Deb, she managed reservations at the restaurant, which was perched on the hundred-and-seventh floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Windows on the World was part of a little gang of night spots high in the North Tower. There was the Greatest Bar on Earth and another restaurant called Wild Blue. At Windows on the World, the tables bore white tablecloths and little vases, each with a single flower. Men had to wear jackets or they could not take their tables. Finance was transforming the country and taking over the city—Deb watched nineteen-eighties New York decide on its identity. She remembers Grace Kelly and Andy Warhol coming in. She remembers the day, in 1983, when she didn’t ask the maître d’ whether his purple swelling was Kaposi’s sarcoma, because she didn’t want to offend him and she had only learned about the aids virus that morning. She was twenty-three years old when she started the job, and commuted to work from Jersey City.

A new exhibition displays a series of objects collected from the pre-9/11 World Trade Center by a woman who worked at one of the restaurants there.

The Fitzgerald Room at the Ritz Hotel Paris. Many of these items are being auctioned off, with thousands of others over the course of three days. The auction guide itself is a sumptuous feast of historic images, stories, timelines and items that you can own.

A sale of this magnitude always reverberates through the network of the Society. We’ll be glued to our screens over the next few days. Still, even if a few items make their way into the homes of our members, nothing beats getting together under the hallowed roof of The Ritz for a party, where every suite, room, or seat is historically charged. Revelry Society’s List of Best Christmas Specials Past

They don’t do Christmas specials like they used to. The campy, slightly cheezy, unscripted, gag heavy, and crammed with celebrity cameos live Christmas TV special is a thing of the past.

Which is why Society members around the world are leaving the looping logs alone, and instead are firing up YouTube and the flutes of their Champagne cocktails for an evening in front of the TV for an evening of classic Christmas revelry.
