Super glad I got this out before next year started and hopefully I can get the next 5 pages of the chapter out before that too.  A Heart and a Half - Chapter 14: A Wish Your Heart Makes is finally here! :D

This was originally going to be an extremely long chapter, with a work-in-progress over 16,000 words long, but I decided to split it in half, so it’s now 11,000 words instead. This’ll give me more time to work on the other 5,000 words, take my time without rushing, and really flesh it out into a full-length Chapter 15! Thank you for all your support, even though I’m super slow at updating! X3

Since I’m a perfectionist, I’ve also updated my other fanfics as well, nothing major, just fixing a few typos and correcting an awkward sentence or two. If you’d like, you can re-download the PDFs of Confection Affection, D-Link in the Dark, and Friendship to Flowers for the full updated versions! It’s probably a good idea to re-download my fanfics about every year or so, ‘cause I swear I find new typos every time I re-read them! :P

Aqua was still cradling the blue charm in her hands. “What is that?” Vanitas asked, indicating towards it. “Hmm? Oh, it’s my Wayfinder. It’s supposed to lead me back to my friends. Each of us have one.” She held it out in her palms. The charm was a five-pointed star of blue-tinted glass, a similar hue to her hair and eyes. It was trimmed in silver with a shining pendant in the center, the same as the symbol on her chest. “It’s beautiful,” he breathed. “You like it? Even though it’s connected to Terra and Ven?” she asked, eyebrows raised. His face flushed slightly. “Well, I’m sure theirs aren’t nearly as good as yours.”

A fanart inspired by the fanfiction A Heart and a Half (www.fanfiction.net/s/13167097/…) based on what I’ve imagined them wearing based on descriptions from later in the story. I didn’t want to try and get super elaborate on the background, but there are so many things I was excited about when i fully completed this artwork- even just in sketch form. Something else that a lot of KH fans don’t talk about a lot (probably because there’s a good chance they just missed this piece of Kairi dialogue): a hint that Kairi met Merlin before.

Which, you know, would have been great if it came up in KHIII, when Kairi was back in her home world and Merlin was training her to be a Keyblade wielder? Or if we had even gotten to see Merlin train Kairi and Lea at all, or any of their training at all?

Though, if I’m being honest, I’m like 99.9% sure that Nomura forgot that he or whoever put this line into KH1 twenty years ago.

Huh. Excalibur was Sora’s name for it, right? Does she say this no matter what Sora names the raft, or does this line only come up if it’s kept as the default Excalibur? And does she have a different line if Riku wins and it’s the Highwind instead?

I think this only really works as a hint if it’s exclusive to the raft being named Excalibur. It would be really neat if it was, I love that for continuity reasons, but I have no idea what that line is if you changed the name of the raft and it’s hard to find footage of people who talked to Kairi at this point

Interesting. I don’t know why I didn’t expect KH1 to have context-specific dialogue, especially since it’s the only game in the franchise to have context-specific cutscene variations. That probably makes it even more likely that people didn’t see it: a combination of renaming the raft for fun, losing to Riku, and then also not talking to Kairi. Do any of those and you miss it

It checks out, though. We know that Merlin was living in (or has a vacation home in?) Radiant Garden during BBS when Kairi was still living there. She or her grandma could have known Merlin and heard stories from him

Lies of the Series Beyond #17: Kairi Remembers Nothing of Her Life in Radiant Garden

This appears to be what Nomura has been going with for a good long while now, and it’s a load of bullshit.

Kairi didn’t remember all that much about her life in Radiant Garden, it’s true. A combination of her being a very young child and the trauma of being sent away from it by force would do that. But in the original KH, look at this scene toward the start:

The way Jun Akiyama does this shot is deliberate. We have a close-up on the side of Kairi’s face as Sora asks if she remembers “nothing at all”? The smile rapidly fades from Kairi’s face and is replaced with a frown, right before she casually replies “Nothing” and puts on another smile.

Kairi is lying. She may not remember everything, but she certainly hasn’t forgotten everything either. And we see this to be true later on, because Kairi initiates the flashback to her listening to her grandmother’s story in Hollow Bastion in order to help motivate a depressed Sora.

The whole point in the original game is that Kairi does remember enough of her past life to know that she was happy and loved in it, and then it was all ripped away from her in traumatic fashion by some asshole who gave in to the darkness because he was seeking more. This is what creates a personal conflict within her: she would like to see what became of her old home, but she also feels happy and loved in her new home and is afraid of losing it and all her new loved ones too, especially when Riku starts acting in the highly triggering way he does. 

But no, Nomura said “Let’s not allow Kairi to be a complex character, let’s just reduce her down to a total amnesiac innocent.” Blah!

Random thought: I've read quite a few KH fanfictions where people just casually eat paopu fruit, using it in their dishes and stuff. But I feel like that probably wouldn't happen in canon, tbh (but it's totally fine that it happens in fanfiction, of course. That's part of the fun of it).

I just remember Selphie in KH1 lecturing Sora that paopu fruit is sacred, so to only pick one if he was going to share it with someone.

So I imagine paopu fruit is only ever eaten by a couple trying to connect their destinies to each other for the first time.

And then maybe pairings who have already done this? Who are maybe then free to eat paopu fruit whenever they want afterwards? IDK.
