Re-Writing Cave Story: Welcome

Hello, I hope this day/night/evening finds you well.

This is going to be a series of small chapters, that will compile into the entire story of well, Cave Story, one of the best indie games ever made.

This story does involve headcanons and Quote won't be following the normal 'silent protagonist' role that he has in the original game, (sorry-) but I'm certain that someone out there will enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing it.

For now, the first 3 chapters will be added, and as time goes on and I gain more readers, I'll add more.

Apologies for not posting for so long! I had taken a 1 week hiatus, and the process to move the story from a doc and revising capitalization errors and spelling errors have been difficult somewhat, but I promise that the next 2 chapters will be added within the next 2 weeks!

Chapter 2: A Lonely Village In Peril

“Look out below!” I yell, bracing for impact. I hit the ground with a thud. “…Ugh…Ow…” I get up, wiping the dust off of me when I realize I may or may not have crushed one of the creatures that were talking. I try to talk to the one in purple, since the one in green ran away somewhere. 

“You’re…Not one of them are you?” He asks, standing up himself. 

“One of what?” I ask.

“Nevermind. If you don’t know, it's probably for the best.” He sighs. “I’m King, The leader of this village, called Mimiga Village. It doesn’t mean much though.” 

I look at him puzzled. 

“There’s only 7 of us left. 8 If you want to count, Sue but…She’s not one of us. And she probably never will be.” I perk up.

“Do..do you know where I could find Sue?” I ask, now curious. 

“What? You’re looking for her? That brat has done nothing for us except waste our supplies, and she thinks she can give us mouth.” He sighs again. “I don’t understand how Toroko can even like her…” 

I decide to walk away. I wonder…Is Sue a good person? I shake my head. I head up where I find a farm and one of those other capsules, but underwater. Then I head to the reservoir and talk to the Mimiga there. 

“You’re looking for Sue? Yeah, She’s pretty mean. She fell into the reservoir here. She’s mean but, she’s also a Mimiga like us? I wonder why she’s like this.” They say. Shrugging, I dive into the water and see a locket. But when I try to leave, I see the mimiga in green run away. When I leave the room, King and the Mimiga in green are arguing. Is she Sue?

“Hand over the key!” King yells. 

“Nooo!” The other mimiga whines and she runs into King, knocking him over. 

I jog over to King, a little worried.

“Aaargh! Toroko!! Don’t underestimate me!!” He yells to the Mimiga in green, who is now revealed not to be Sue. He gets up and starts mumbling, and I jump down and go after Toroko. She doesn’t have anything to protect her, In fact…None of the Mimiga do. Except maybe King, I saw him with a sword sling. But the other Mimiga, I’ve gotta keep them safe.

I land and see a house, but when I try to enter, It’s locked. I have to go into the other building. 

As I walk in a little, I suddenly hear a small voice say, “You Jerk!!” As a stick hits me in the back of my head, and pretty hard too. Ow, Jeez! The source of the small voice reveals herself to be Toroko. She seems like she’s fixated on attacking. 

“HEY!” I yell, startling her and making her trip. 

“Waaaaa!!” She cries. “Help me! Oh, somebody help!”

I feel guilty for yelling so I grab her hand and help her up.

“You’re…Not the Doctor?” She says. I shake my head. “Oh…I’m sorry. The Doctor is so cruel and evil..He sometimes will show up here and kidnap Mimiga…Even sometimes killing someone…” She looks down and fiddles with her jacket. “The Doctor…He killed my older brother…” Now I feel angry. But also confused. Aren’t doctors supposed to help people?

“Ah! My Pendant!” Toroko Says, suddenly perking up. “You found it! Sue gave it to me, as a gift!” She looks down again. “But I don’t think I want in anymore…King gets really angry when Sue and I get along. You can have it.”

“Thank you, but who’s Su-“

The room shakes, and I hear the Cry of “Oh Yeahhh!” Before the door breaks down, showing a toaster…Maybe, with a face. 

“I found you!!!” He says, Smiling. “You can’t Hide from me! I’ve got the nose of a clever harrier!” 

“Indeed.” I hear another voice say, this one a bit deep and feminine. That’s when I see the source. 

“He has the nose and brain of a dog.” The new and somewhat mysterious person says.

“Misery!!! I found her first! Finders keepers!!” The toaster says.

Toroko gasps. “You two are with the Doctor!!!” 

Misery looks stunned, before replying. “Hmph. You must be Sue. The Great Doctor himself has summoned you, you should feel honoured. Come along now.”

“Huh??? But..I’m not Sue! I’m Toroko!!” Toroko says.

“I’m not falling for a silly trick like that girl!!” Misery says, casting Toroko into a bubble. 

“Waaaahhh!!” Toroko cries.

“Balrog. Take care of him.” Misery says, motioning over to me.

“I’m the wrong person! I TOLD YOU!!” I hear Toroko yell, until I can’t hear them anymore. 

“Aw man…I always gotta do the cleanup work!” Balrog complains. “And what about finders keepers, huh?” He looks away for a moment, then stares at me.

“Ahem. So, what’s up Junkbot? Wanna fight with that little peashooter gun of yours?” Balrog asks. 

“Bring it!” I yell, infuriated that they took Toroko away. 

“‘Affirmative!’” He mocks. I give him all I’ve got, but it’s not much considering I just woke up not too long ago. I defeat him anyway. He didn’t even get the chance to attack me.

“I’ll remember this, Junkbot!” He says, jumping up and flying away. I’ve got to tell King about Toroko!

Chapter 1: A Hero’s Awakening

Augh…Where am I? What..Happened? I blink my eyes open. It’s a cold empty cave, with a puddle of water underneath the platform I'm on. Water drips from the ceiling on my right, making a blip sound when it lands in the puddle. 

I prop myself up. It feels like I’ve been asleep forever… But now it’s time to get outta here. I make a jump to the platform on my left, and look up. For a cave this sure is small… I Take a leap of faith upward, and see a door. Why would a cave have a door in it? I shrug it off. 

I go through the door which leads to a larger part of the cave. Spikes line the ceiling and floor to my left, while the right is just a dead end. Well, now what?

I go to the left to see just how deadly these spikes are, when I get an image of me trying to test them and I fall over and get impaled, killing me. The image frightens me. It was a sudden image in my mind, like I knew it was gonna happen, but it didn’t. So I’m fine.

I shake my head. The hell was that? I think as I avoid the spikes, and bats flying up and down. Those bats are cute… The floor changes from a rough rock to some more polished rock, like the one I woke up on. On the top, is a little capsule with a heart shaped device in it. 

I pick it up, and unscrew the side. I pull out the heart shaped device and notice that there’s a keypad on it, though there’s no numbers, and the buttons are painted the same color as the heart. I start putting random codes in, but none of them seem to work. 

That’s when I notice a small sliver of paper in the capsule, with the numbers, “269367” on it. On the other side of the paper, a little message is printed, “You can do it, Hero!” I blink a little. Hero? I didn’t do anything but..Ok. I put the code into the device, and to my surprise, the top part opens, revealing a small cylinder with the word ‘Nano’ printed on it in a small font that’s very difficult to read.

 I take it out with my right hand, and that’s when a small circular plug shows itself on my left hand. Do humans normally do this? I shrug. I plug in the cylinder, and when the process is done, I feel more energized. The capsule and everything that was inside it except the paper materializes into nothing as soon as the process is completed. Weird…

I pick up the slip of paper for the motivational message and move on. Two puddles of water, bats and critters stand in my way, but after a few maneuvers, I now stand in front of another cave entrance. I enter the room, which turns out to be a small room, with a few things and furniture around. There’s no bed to my surprise, all I really see is a bunch of gun parts laying around, which is definitely odd. I keep my guard up. 

I make my way over to a table and chair, the table holding what seems to be some recently used tools for gun making, But no one’s here. 

Suddenly, I hear a low grumbling that shocks me so bad I jump, and hide behind a bookcase. I hyperventilate and try to calm myself down, and I look back to see what that grumbling was, and I feel like kicking myself in the head. It’s just a hermit sleeping… 

I take in a sigh of relief and walk out of my hiding spot. Oddly enough, the hermit is standing up, even while asleep. Huh. Weird. I slowly start to realize that this cave is quite dangerous, with the death spikes and the critters and bats floating around. I need something to protect myself…I hope the hermit won’t mind… I start searching the place for anything useful. Oh! It’s a blue gun that looks newly made, with the mark of the northern star on it. When I think of a name, the Polar Star, I get another message from Kazuma…

[ACCEPTING INCOMING TRANSMISSION…]

Kazuma: Sueeeeeee

Kazuma: where are you????

Kazuma: you didn’t fall asleep did you?

Kazuma: your brother is lonely

Kazuma: and hungry…

Kazuma: So hungry I ate a cockroach

Kazuma: …

Kazuma: yeah I’m lying, but honestly if you leave me hanging this long I might just do that 

Kazuma: so hurry up will you?

Who’s this ‘Kazuma’ Guy, and who’s Sue? I shake my head. Now is not the time for questions. I pick up the gun. It fits perfectly in my hands, almost as if it was made for someone my size. I leave, quietly because I don’t want to wake up the hermit that’s sound asleep. 

I hold the gun in both my hands, and just stare at it. It looks…A bit undone. Let’s see if it works though.. I take aim at one of the bats, and shoot it with a beam of electricity. Though the gun didn’t seem as promising as before, it definitely feels promising now. As I make my way back up to the room where I woke up, I notice that I don’t get a weird image in my head from the spikes. Huh. Maybe it’s cause I got that capsule thing? I shrug it off. When I make it to the wall that seems to be a dead end, I go out on a limb and just shoot it. To my surprise though, it actually works! Alright! After defeating the critters that were waiting for me, I try to open the door…But it’s not a door.

“?!”

An eye opens where the tiny window should be, and stares directly at me. I shriek, and shoot the hell out of it. It soon disappears though. …I’m not even sure I want to know what that thing was. I exit the cave, and the light outside is too bright for me.

All of the sudden the next I know is I’m falling. Fast.

Prologue: Sudden Messages

[SYSTEM STARTING. ACCEPTING INCOMING TRANSMISSION…]

Kazuma: Sue?

Kazuma: Sue are you there

Kazuma: Don’t leave me hanging, send something back will you

Kazuma: please?

Kazuma: oh yeah and Im pretty hungry so please hurry to the computer will you?
