Concrete Donkey!
This weekend I finally took Turntable to an event and fought in some featherweight battles! Having missed the first fight of the weekend getting the robot up and running with my dad, we got into the remaining three fights and had a blast. We ended our first fight in the pit, having been pushed in by the 150Kg House Robot, Cyber Raptor, but got thoroughly stuck in and easily survived being thrown across the arena by the floor flipper! Our drive on one side had issues in this first fight, but TT still pushed lots of people around and got under everything with its wedge so a good bout! In day two, we fought in a rumble with Get Shrekt, a huge vertical spinner and one of the Four Verts Of The Apocalypse, but came out okay! You can see the damage, but all of it is superficial and TT still runs beautifully.
So we had a design for a 4WD ram not similar in concept to Whoops or Duck, and we built it and it works really well in testing and it's front is more heavily armoured than any other beetle we know of. It's a success by all measures of design, it literally fulfills everything it was supposed to do, including feature creep elements.
But...
I feel like there's more to do with it? Like I could make this a 4WD drum (boring and meta I know), I could go all Brushless with it, I could make it have Perspex armour plates so it can have a cool light display in it. There's so much more I wanna do but is it even worth risking a working bot to make something that might never work or get finished?
Pinwheel has a lot of holes in him now! All this is designed to save weight to allow for guards and a big old weapon. Running 4S makes him heavy!
We’re off to Bugglebots with the upgraded Pinwheel today! Make sure you watch the series when it goes live!
Pinwheel MK4 is done and my god, it scares us
RBing this because this is the terrifying monster we're taking to Bugglebots. I'll be driving a different machine and acting as another team on Camera, but behind the scenes it's all Jolly Cooperation!
Pinwheel MK4 is done and my god, it scares us
Say hello to Pinwheel MK3! Newly completed with a big weapon, wheel guards and decent drive, this should be quite a powerful little machine. Its first test will be BBB3 this Sunday!

For those who don't know, this is where our robot Pinwheel got his name! In Dark Souls, this boss had a reputation for being incredibly easy, mostly because he had absolutely no health so died very quickly. We never expected Pinwheel to be a survivor, and so the name stuck!
It helps that the Skeletons with giant spinning wheels are coloqiually reffered to as "pinwheels", which kinda fits the spinner idea
Pinwheel MK3 having a drive about! It's using the the Fingertech Robotics Goldspark Gear motors on 14v and running really well. It's very fast! Though it has next to no pushing power, it doesn't need it as a spinner, and given the light weight and small profile of the motors, they're perfect for what we wanted
First test fit of the new Pinwheel! This is MK3 now and hopefully it'll do some serious damage. It's sporting a 20cm long, 3cm wide and 0.6cm thick Hardox bar this time, over 6 times larger in area than the last weapon and substantially heavier! The armour is 4mm aluminium and 10mm HDPE for a nice light weight so as to allow a bigger weapon! Theoretically, it should spin the weapon at 126Mph maximum, which isn't half bad for a 300g bar!
This time, we fought Snappy and... Well it was a quick one! We didn't have any protection from getting stuck on our side (we added more after this) but alas, too little late
Florida Man Vs IIC! Alex drove really really well in this one with nightmarish controls, it couldn't really have gone too much better
This was our first fight with Pinwheel and we were pleasantly surprised! The weapon had no bite, something that would be an issue constantly, but Alex drove very well and made use of the easy to control, slow and powerful drive. A win for us and a major boost for the second day! We lost a tire in this fight which you can see but somehow still kept driving!
Pinwheels second fight, and another victory! This time with me at the controls, we managed to disable SCD with concussive force which owed more to the complexity of Craig's robot than our weapon. Fortunately for us, though SCD did manage to reset in time after the first hit, our second was too much for the poor Melty Brain machine. You'll notice that after seeing SCD get back up from that hit, I didn't spin down after the second one! SCD is a super cool robot though, and I'm really glad Craig got it working by the end of the event. It'll be great to see it next time!
This was our first ever battle and needless to say we learnt a lot in a very short space of time! You might not be able to see it here but what happened in short was that Rev 2 managed to hit our link very quickly and we were out! Alex struggled with the controls which didn't help any either but hey, you learn!
We got some of those tanky new motors finally! They mount to some cast aluminium mounts that're substantially stronger than the thin, weak ones we had in the past. These are the 500Rpm pair, and there's a 1,500Rpm pair on their way. Now I just need wheels with a big enough bore!
