“it was just a short ride. i brought it back in like ten minutes.” rey didn’t make it a habit of taking customers’ cars for joy rides, but the guy had been extremely rude. “i also may or may not have let most of the air out of his tires before he picked it up. but it hasn’t happened since. i swear.”

“thanks for helping me, kat. nobody here wanted to. bunch of grinches.” the tree in the lobby of the auto body shop was beginning to take shape, slowly but surely. “i told your uncle that it was silly that so many other business had a christmas tree, yet we didn’t.” rey hung another ornament, stood back on the stepladder to examine, and decided it needed to be moved to a lower branch. “how it’s coming on your side?”

brown eyes widened in a mixture of surprise and fear as rey whirled around. “MAKS! don’t do that!” the yellow glow of the blade disappeared as she hit the switch on the saber’s hilt. “you better be glad it was on training mode.” her heart was still pounding, but her breathing had steadied seeing there hadn’t been any damage. “next time say hello or something, weirdo.”

♕ —- “You’d be on your ass,” Ben replied knowing full well that her question had been rhetorical. He could hear his own mother’s voice in his head telling him that he didn’t always have to say the smartest comment but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t like messing with Rey a little bit. Her reactions to it made it all the more fun. And honestly, it was never really out of any spite. “I won’t stop you,” he said but shifted a bit to give her more room on the bench. “You working early today?”

“my knight in shining armor.” she feigned a look of admiration before giving a small laugh, attempting to hide the smirk on her lips. rey was still learning how to become better attuned to her abilities, and it was frustrating when she slipped up — especially in front of others like her. taking a seat, she stuffed her hands into the pockets of her jacket. “i’m not scheduled to go in early, but i figured i would get some work done at the shop. i have a late night at the restaurant, and i didn’t want to be behind tomorrow.” she paused as she checked her phone for the time. “are you spending the holidays with your parents this year?”

With a sharp yelp and shaking his hand to lessen the pain, Luke jumped back from the vehicle. “What a piece of junk!” he muttered angrily, giving the tire a swift kick before realizing he was not alone. “Sorry you had to see that…”

“technically i didn’t.” her grease-stained face suddenly appeared as she rolled out from beneath a nearby vehicle. as rey sat up, she pushed her goggles up onto her forehead. “oh, it’s that one. yeah. definite piece of junk.” she stood up, wiping her hands on her overalls. “need some help? i can take a break from this one for a bit. they won’t be by to pick it up until tomorrow afternoon anyways.”

♕ —- “I’m sure you did,” Ben replied as he casually looked over at Rey and arched a brow. “Waiting for the coffee shop to open up,” he nodded ahead of them. “Just resting a bit after a long 48 hour shift. But good thing I was here, not saving you from falling on your ass. Because you totally saw the sign.”

“yeah, what would i do without you?” the statement came out harsher than she’d intended, and rey sighed, internally chiding herself for letting him get to her. gotta keep your emotions in check better than that. a tiny frown formed on her lips when she thought of just how long he’d been working. she worked two jobs, but never could she imagine working that long in one shift. “i think they open in like ten minutes. i guess i’ll stick around and get something myself. mind if i sit?”

Jia knew she probably disappointed her parents a bit by not continuing in her martial arts classes, but Jia really preferred running; no competing with anyone and she could listen to her music at the same time. She was taking a jog on her day off when there was the slight pause in between songs in her earbuds. In that exact moment, a loud noise made it through to Jia and her eyebrows scrunched in confusion. She took out an earbud and looked around to see what made the noise.

“that was definitely someone’s worn out muffler.” even though it was a sound she had become accustomed to, rey had still been startled, stopping in her tracks to watch the car pass by. “i bet they get terrible gas mileage. not to mention how bad it is for the environment.” she paused, giving the other girl a sheepish look. “sorry, didn’t mean to ramble.”

♕ —- “You’re about to run into that sign,” Ben mumbled sleepily as he removed his arm from over his eyes and sat up from the casual position he was in on the park bench. “Should probably watch where you’re going.”

“i knew it was there.” rey huffed, unable to keep from rolling her eyes. it wasn’t the most convincing argument, but she didn’t really feel like admitting that she had, in fact, nearly plowed into the sign. especially not to him. “is this your new napping spot?”

Ideally, a Jedi took many months to construct a single perfect weapon that he or she would keep and use for a lifetime. Once you build it, the lightsaber will become your constant companion, your tool, and a ready means of defense.
