Rey felt herself blush crimson as her husband commented on the intimate activities that they would share once they were husband and wife. It made her nervous with anticipation. âYesâŠyes of course. Whatever you shall wantâŠâ she stumbled for her words.
He smiled and stepped up to her. Her chaperone was amazed with the mosaic on floor just beyond the door. He quickly kissed Reyâs lips. He stepped back. âForgive me. I couldnât control myself.â He said. âI need t do that or I would be driven mad.â
Ben dropped her off at her home in the hands of her father. They were to be married in a fortnight. As preparations started up for the festivity, she saw him less and less as the day drew nearer. Finally, the morning of their wedding came. Her mother and aunts woke her early, bathing here and covering her in sweet smelling oils. Her hair was done up in the traditional bridal style and a beautiful orange veil laid over her head. She was a vision as she was led to the atrium of her fathers home to be handed over to her husband.
His family was waiting with him for the ceremony to start. Ben was excited and truly eager to have Rey as his wife. He smiled when he saw her with her father. He offered his hand and curled it around hers. They had to break bread and sign some documents but they would be married soon.
Her stomach was clenched with anticipation the entire time as she watched her father and fiancé deal with the business side of the marriage, namely the dowry. She knew her father was to give her husband much in her dowry. When finally the time came, she and Ben were sent in a litter back to his villa, ready to officially be husband and wife.

Her eyes widened in surprise when her fiancĂ©âs lips pressed to hers for a brief moment. A shock sent through lips and to her whole system when he pulled back. âItâs... itâs okay..â she brought her hand to her mouth to touch her lips for a brief moment before she brought it back to her side. âPerhaps we should be heading back...â she suggested.

Rey was alight when they reached the house. It was nearly finished now and when they entered the structure artisans were hard at work tiling mosaics and painting frescos on the walls. It was beautiful. He walked her through the house and with each room they went though she was more and more excited to finally be married to him and move in.
âAnd this is our roomsâŠâ he presented. âI know it is custom that husband and wife should have separate rooms but I rather have you in my bed always.â He said, quietly and away from the ears of her chaperone. He was eager to marry Rey and for her to bear their children.Â

As they walked back to her family home she told him all about her interests. They mostly centered around what her mother taught her about keeping a proper household but she did let slip that she enjoyed the lessons sheâd had when she was younger with a stylus and tablet. She wished she still could write like that but upon reaching puberty her father had stopped her lessons and sent her to her mother.
His wife to be was a real conundrum for Ben. He found that he liked her more for it. Sweet girl. He vowed to make sure that her interests would be cultivated in the household that they shared. He spoke to her parents and they were all too happy to arranged for chaperone so Rey could see the villa that Ben was building for them in the city.Â

Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. What was meant to show her betrothed that she was to be his had backfired; he didnât like it. âIâm sure once we are married I can take it down⊠even though matronas do not wear their hair that wayâŠâ she sighed softly, pulling her linen wrap closer to her. âI canât wait to see them,â she tried to sound enthusiastic but felt it was forced due to the previous interaction.
He stopped and turned to look at her. âI didnât say I do not like the way you have done your hair. I just like your hair down. You are beautiful either way.â He reassured her. Women were so difficult sometimes. Their chaperone was on the ways back. He reached for her hand. âPerhaps we can travel there.â

She flushed again when he called her beautiful. It was nice to know she was pleasing to her fiancĂ©âs eye. When he grabbed her hand she pulled it away, her eyes darting to her aunt then back to him. âItâs not proper⊠you know that,â she shook her head slightly, whispering to him. âI donât think my aunt would let me go all the way to the villa, well she wonât want to go which means I canât eitherâŠ.â
âWhat difference would it make?â He asked. âWe are to be married soon.â Her hand was soft and Ben would want to feel it again. âWe can ask your parents. Maybe they could give you a chaperone that would travel.â
âBut we arenât married yet,â she shook her head at him again. He was an interesting man to say the least. Perhaps it was all his years in the Legion that made him forget about the traditions and taboos of his home soil. Touching a man when unmarried was completely frowned upon, even in the the privacy of the garden and even if it was her betrothed. âPerhaps... will you want me home then to see if theyâll let me?â

Rey smiled slightly as she stared down at the red gravel that marked the pathways through the garden. Her mother had insisted upon her engagement that the long flowing style of girlhood be replaced with a more controlled hairdo. Now her hair lay carefully plaited, their ends wrapped in soft linen to keep things together. âYes⊠do you like it?â She asked him curiously, her bottom lip finding its way between her teeth.
âIf it is my choice Iâd rather your hair be down.â He said. âBut I understand the fashions might not find that favorable.â They walked in silence for a moment. âThe villas are getting built according to plan. They would be a fine home for us and our children.âÂ

The girl was almost a decade younger than him. His parents had arranged to find him a wife since he barely had any time to do so himself, not with his duties. This was the first time he met her and she was acceptable. Her face had these freckles that was not fashionable but she had a healthy physique and these beguiling eyes. He presented her all jewels of betrothal until she was twinkling with gold and gems. It was all formality and he was glad that they had a few moments to themselves. Well as alone as they could be with her chaperones.

Rey nodded her head, âthat is not too long to wait.â But inwardly she was conflicted with the time frame. A part of her was glad to have more time to get to know him before they were bound together in marriage. But the other side was saddened sheâd have to wait, for many of her girlhood friends were already matrona themselves, and even mothers. âI look forward to it...â she gave him a small smile.

Rey looked down at her hands, feeling silly for her foolish question. Perhaps she ought to have asked him how long heâd been a senator first. That would have been the smart thing to do. âMy mistakeâŠâ she kept her eyes averted from his gaze, feeling an embarrassed flush paint her cheeks rosy.
He smiled a little and touched her shoulder. âI do not mind the question.â He told her. âMistakes are a way to learn.â He paused. âI will be settling down in the capital and arranging for our house there as well as a villa in the countryside. Then we can wed.â
Rey looked to their chaperone as his hand touched her shoulder. She could feel the warmth through the fine linen of her tunic. âDo you know how long that will be?â She looked up at him again, wanting to know how long she would wait before she was to be a wife.

Rey had been nervous when her parents had brought her to meet her intended. He was a senator, and before that a soldier for the empire. He was an honorable man according to her parents, and they were happy to give her away to him. But she had her doubts. Even upon setting her eyes on him and seeing how handsome he was, she knew a handsome man did not a good husband make.
As they sat together in ththe courtyard, she was blinded by the betrothel jewelry she wore. âAnd have you done any good deeds since you joined the senate?â She asked him softly, wondering about his temperament.
