if you think about it there’s no real reason for smith to be a more common surname than another standard job like cook. except that smiths fucked more. all those smiths in their forges with their big muscular arms all covered in sweat. i bet the medieval women were gagging for it.

Smith here. A lot of genealogy research has been done in our family and from what I understand it's got a lot to do with the War of the Roses.

My ancestral name is actually Carrington - at least so the story goes. And what it came down to was that we picked the wrong side, went to France, and when things calmed down in England we changed our name to Smythe to return.

As to why there are so many of us, a good trade that was needed for utility for so long means we travelled far and wide. Whereas many people can bake or cook well enough to get by, not everyone can smith.
