It wasn’t something she expected to happen, but being back home felt good. Which was weird. Rhea loved being home, she just liked being away from it a little more. Living life on her own. Proving herself. The biggest part of her being happy with being back was because of a certain someone would be more -- easily to be with. Instead of waiting for summer breaks or random trips and phone calls. It was hard being away from someone who was your best friend (one she still denies feelings for even when they’re very evident).
Standing around the skatepark she used to frequent, Rhea thought about how she could surprise him. Jack didn’t know that she was done with school yet. Or that she had already found a place to stay and a job. She had set things up a few days before coming home. And here she was, letting her thoughts run wild and anxiety pick up. Why was she so worried about surprising him? It felt like he wouldn’t be happy. But why wouldn’t he? Why did it matter? It wasn’t like they were exclusive. Best friends with fun and majorly good benefits.
Why ruin that? Would it be ruining it? Fuck.
All Rhea knew was that she missed Jack a ridiculous amount. And she needed to see him. Fuck whatever else that meant. She wasn’t going to dwell on it. Not yet anyway. No need to ruin a reunion that’s been months in the making. With a long drag of her cigarette, Rhea exhaled and turned to leave, squashing her nerves as she snuffed out the cigarette with her boot. Not even noticing that she wasn’t alone anymore when she turned to leave.

“Great band name, indie pop for sure,” Zora laughed. “Absolute chaos would break out because people would have to make their own drinks,” she feigned terror.
“They wouldn’t know what to do! We’re magicians that know how to open bottles and pour things into glasses! Imagine the madness, the mess! These poor souls need us, Zora!” her sarcasm was thick behind her laughter.

“I have a dilemma,” Chloe said, forgoing a greeting and jumping right to the point, tossing her bag on the floor and then joining it across from where Rhea sat. “Regarding the Chicago auditions.” She stuck out a cup from the nearby coffee shop. “Want?”
“Absolutely,” Rhea was quick to take the cup of coffee, not even realizing how badly she needed the caffeine until it was right in front of her. Leaning forward from her comfy spot against the wall to take a sip before motioning to Chloe to get out whatever the problem was, “Okay. What’s the dilemma?”
jackxofspades:
The mere mention of the name slowed his thoughts. Where things were left were not things he wanted to discuss. “Note, no. They’re still looking into it.” Jack looked to her, knowing she was testing him. The kind of test that could not be passed, no matter which avenue he took.
“Radio silence,” was all Jack could say. Emotions he’d tangle with another time. Any other time than right now. Not after the day he had. “It’s just what it’s always been. No less, no more.” No more. It stung to think about, which was why Jack was quick to gather Rhea into his arms, having her come his way.
“I need a mini vaca,” Jack sidestepped. “I don’t know where, or when.” It was just an overall desire for escapism. “You wanna come with?” He asked, closing his eyes as he tried to relax back against the couch. “Somewhere cold, please.” He laughed. The heat was a favorite of his, but the mugginess that Florida brought him was suffocating some days.
“You wanna take a trip into my heart, or what? Pretty chilly.” He joked, though it did feel like the kind of place that could cool down his fine temper, long enough to think without frustration or a drink to remedy. “Throw a dart at a map kind of adventure. Unless you have a better idea. Douuubt it,” Jack tickled behind her ear to get her to look up at him. “I don’t get sick of you, you get sick of me. Gotta leave me to better yourself. Keep coming back, though. You’re not right in the head, killer. But I dig it–my kinda weird..” He meant with only affection.
There was no way that she was going to press either matter further. Seeing in his expression and hearing the tone of his voice, she wasn’t going to bring him any more painful thoughts. Already regretting bringing Jynne up in the first place. Rhea just needed to know. She needed him to be able to heal and move on if whatever those two had had ended. The note, on the other hand, wasn’t something she could ask more about if they didn’t know anything -- and she knew Jack would tell her when he knew.
Rhea felt her smile grow as he held her in his arms, listening to him speak and feeling the vibration of his voice against her skin. Something about it made their position even more comfortable. All her earlier worries melting away in his warmth. If this moment was how they both ended their day -- a way they’ve ended many days before -- Rhea was one hundred percent okay with it. There wouldn’t be a time when she wouldn’t be.
Jack had a hold on her that she wasn’t fully aware of yet.
There was a quiet giggle that escaped her when he tickled behind her ear. Damn him. Any semblance of annoyance disappeared when she lifted her head to look at him, their eyes meeting and a smile forming on her lips. Lifting her head a bit more, Rhea lightly kissed his jaw and speaking softly against his skin, “Happy to be your kind of weird as long as you’ll have me.” Another kiss followed, this time on his neck. Slowly pulling away, letting their eyes meet once more, her voice still soft and quiet, “Let’s go somewhere cold. A cabin in the mountains,” her fingers trailed down his chest, resting on his heart, “I’ll keep you and your heart warm.”

“In snark there is truth,” Zora shrugged playfully. “Ugh, the rush, I hate people. What if we just lied and said we were closed? That wouldn’t be bad right?”
“The Snarky Truth. A fun band name,” she teased again as they walked back towards the bar. Laughing, “I think that would be VERY bad. People get crazy if their alcoholic line is cut off.”
jackxofspades:
“Sup, pensive princess,” Jack greeted, as he walked into the house, finding her lost in her mind again. “Second day in a row you’ve fogged the living room with thought clouds.” He teased scooting her legs just enough to sit down beside her.
A lot had been accomplished today. Memorial shit show was taken care of, wiped his hands clean of it as soon as it was finished. “Changed the locks today for you, which is not me rushing you out of here,” Jack said directly, looking to her with suspicion. Rhea loved her thinking. If over-thinking were a competitive sport, she would have been a gold champion. But truthfully, she deserved a space of her own, where she could live in comfort, not fear. “Set up the security shit with the guy about an hour ago. Just gotta download the app for you, and you’ll be all set.”
Jack squeezed her foot, “What’s on your mind, sunshine?” He was often oblivious to the way a woman’s mind worked, but he had a feeling it was something he did. When wasn’t he responsible for the tension in the room? “What’d I do?– so we can fix it. Nip it in da butt.”
“YOU didn’t do anything,” at least not intentionally, she thought as she responded with a small smile -- even though she had almost hit him when he spoke and broke her out of her thought bubble. Rhea hated being so jumpy but just being around Jack made her feel better. Comfortable. SAFE. Even if she did want her own space, he could be in that space as much as he wanted.
Rhea hated keeping her feelings -- whatever they were right now -- from him but she didn’t want to RUIN what they had. She didn’t want to confuse him or hurt him. “Thank you. I’ll go whenever you decide you’re sick of me,” she joked, laughing a bit as she nudged his hand with her foot. “Any news on the note?” there was a pause, her curiosity on what else was going on in his life came to her lips, “Or Jynne?”
Her feelings didn’t matter with this question, HIS did. And that concern shown in her eyes as she leaned closer to him, taking one of his hands in hers -- lightly running her fingertips across the skin on the back of his hand and up his wrist. His happiness would always be more important than whatever the hell her feelings were.

It had been two days since the Rhea and Jack reunion ended with them finding a creepy, serial killer note in her new apartment. Though Rhea could easily take care of herself -- despite her fear -- Jack refused to let her stay at her place by herself and had her come stay at his. Usually this would be a fun time, being at his place, but things seemed much more tense. Be it work or the note or the lack of sleep. So many options. Things seemed to be getting into the way. Not to mention Rhea was fighting with herself over feeling jealous that Jack had feelings for another woman. It’s not like they were together. He was free to do what -- and who -- he wanted.
Lost in thought, Rhea was blankly staring at her phone, curled up on Jack’s couch. The TV was on but she wasn’t paying attention to that either. Too many questions were going through her head to care about the world around her. Jack hadn’t been able to give her any answers about the note yet, which was driving her NUTS but it wasn’t his fault. Was she a target? If not then why leave the note at her place? Did she actually have stronger feelings for him than she thought? It wasn’t a secret between them at how happy they made each other. And it’s not like there could be anything more to it -- besides it ending -- because he was in love with someone else. No matter how bad that person was for him. Her thoughts consumed her so much that she didn’t even hear the front door open.
silaslykos:
“I am lucky. Still question how the hell I got so lucky in the first place. Someone out there wants me happy,” he said with a laugh, taking a deep inhale of his cigarette. He really needed to cut down. He rolled his eyes, but knew everything she was saying was only out of love and someone who truly cared. “Thanks Rae,” he said, adding cause she might not believe him, “I mean it. Thank you… for putting me in my place and not holding back. Need someone who doesn’t sugarcoat everything for me. Always been you, even when we were kids.” She was always the tough one, a fighter, and Silas admired it about her. Maybe not back then, but he did the older he got. He never had to worry about her because she was more than capable of handling shit herself.
“Well,” he started, sighing softly. “Gonna have to apologize. To both of them. When I’m ready…. soon.” Truth be told he missed both of them, and didn’t want to keep them in the dark forever. Neither of them deserved it for any longer than necessary. “Deal with it even though it sucked.” He shrugged and looked at her. “Put the bottle down and get over it. Move on and hope everyone still wants a relationship.” He laughed at her threat, “surprised you held back on me at all.. I must really look as bad as I feel.”
“You do look pretty bad,” she smirked, clearly teasing. With just a hint of truth. Rhea doesn’t think she has ever seen Silas look so TIRED. Defeated. It broke her heart. But now? Now there was this sliver of hope underneath it all and that warmed it, more than he could ever know. When Rhea loved someone, she loved fiercely. “Take all the time you need just don’t let it be forever. I know Zac feels awful about it. He’d never intentionally hurt you like this -- NONE of you hurt each other intentionally -- but I know it can’t be easy to get over instantly. I’m just happy you’re going to put the bottle down and FIGHT.”
“And you don’t have to thank me, dude. It’s what I’m here for, right? Like you said, I always have been. Always will be,” this was followed by a nonchalant shrug. Rhea was never one to sugar coat things -- most things -- she just didn’t see the point of it. Lies hurt worse than the truth. Besides, some people needed to hear the hard truth to even set the fire underneath them to make whatever changes they needed. And Rhea definitely wasn’t going to sit back and watch people struggle to light those fires themselves when she knew she could help in some way.
hollisticallyoptimistic:
Zora stuck her tongue out, “You’re just jealous.” She was adjusting pretty well to the summer schedule and she liked being able to work with another person.
“You got me! I’m insanely jealous of your cuteness,” though there was sarcasm, Rhea laughed and flashed Zora a smile. Putting out her smoke, Rhea stood and sighed, “Better get back before the rush.”

“Please,” Zora scoffed, “You know I’m adorable, besides why do you think I don’t do any bottle spinning and eccentric pours – lowers the probability.” She tapped her finger on the her temple, “Big brain energy, right?”
“Yeah, yeah, you’re CUTE. Even with all the scrapes and bruises,” Rhea laughed, shaking her head. At least her new co-worker wasn’t an asshole. Zora was fun to be around -- even if most of it was physical comedy. Mimicking the tapping to her own temple, “Much big brain.”
