The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate
It is through the media that you become informed about world leaders, world politics, federal leaders and federal politics, local leaders and local politics.
Some of what we are reading, viewing, and watching, is true. Some are not. Duterte Administration has somewhat changed the ways of Philippine Government . Iām sure that many politicians have the same gift. I think that I have read that Duterte is the one who ordered the Davao Death Squad. Is it true? Who knows? More importantly, why is it newsworthy because who cares? The media is also important for keeping you up to date with local current events.
When reading, watching, or listening to the media, you must be a critical reader. As you read the newspaper, watch the news, and listen to news flashes on the radio as you drive to work.
Without the media, not only would you miss out on wonderful entertainment such as listening to Celine Dion and watching the program The Voice, but you might also miss the newsflash that there is an earthquake on the other side.
The media is important.
You need to be also Information Literate (Iām assuming that youāre talking about being able to use a variety of devices and apps), because this is the medium of the future. As we can see that we need to know what is happening around us so we may know what are the new trends. This will also make us more wise to what is going on.
As for these days we can see that people can already upload books online and thus do not buy a hard copy of a book unless they particularly enjoy it or want to give it as a gift. There have been predictions that students of the future will be taught by robotic computers of some sort, and that human teachers will be obsolete.
It is essential that everybody who plans to move forward must have these informations.
In short - these are the ways that we receive, process, and send information in contemporary society.
MEDIA: Itās Impact on Society
Almost every day of our lives we are exposed to the media in at least one form or another. Television shows, magazines, newspapers, radio broadcasts, video games, books, and the internet are all different outlets of media produced and published images and ideas that are circulated and communicated around communities, nations, and the world.Ā
How often do we stop and reflect on how these images and ideas shape us or if they even affect us at all? An article by an aliased blogger, āMedia and How It Affects Cultureā, claims that we as a āmature and healthy cultureā will not be affected by different notions displayed in the media, that the media is a reflection of society already. In response to this claim, what the author fails to acknowledge is that the illustrations seen on television, in video games, and other media outlets are not reflections of society in the real world, but reflections of the human imagination designed to entertain, inform, and in some cases influence. The outrageous amounts of violence and vulgarityĀ
I have seen some on television that have not ever been allowed in a real world setting, yet these negative actions occur at an increased rate, proportionate to the availability of access to media. Is it completely fair to say that the increased amounts of violence in schools have no relation to the increased amounts of violence depicted in video games and television. Also, is it rational to suggest that the thousands of anorexic women and even more women who deal with body image based depression have no connection to the fact that almost every successful female figure depicted on magazine covers and in movies are in pristine physical shape and often depicted in a sexualized context. It is clear that mass media has a hand in creating and popularizing toxic culture in these aspects and among others.
There is an ocean in your eyes and I am nothing more than a little ship, lost in the water and I pray to never be found.
