Follwing the crit at the end of the media project, and the feedback i recieved from my peers and my tutor I decided that my project is better suited to a museum “lost stories” setting as an instillation of my series of layouts displayed under bell jars set up on plinths. Rather than as photographs, the layouts would be displayed physically along with small plates with the adjoining stories. I would also mix up some of my own invented narrative pieces with real life stories, and have the purpose of the piece as the audience trying to work out which of the stories are real and which are fiction.

“Aim With a Naughty Twinkle in Her Eye”- Baby Aimee was born to parents who had struggles to concieve. When her mother found out she was pregnant she immediately told her husband, who was at the top of a ladder putting up some shelves. When he heard the news he was so shocked her fell of the ladder and knocked a tooth out.

“Yours Sincerely, Harold Greaves”- Harold Lives in Newport, Wales as a green grocer. He took over the shop after his father died, and began courting the lady who owned the dress shop across the street. They married and eventually had 2 sons and a daughterm each of whom took up the running of the two family businesses after Harold and his wife retired.

“Isolde Smith”- Daughter of a farmer, Isolde grew up in Yorkshire. When she and her sweetheart Gerald became engaged, her mother persuaded Isolde to sew her own wedding dress to save expense. When the female residents of the village saw Isolde’s dress, they all offered to pay her to make dresses for them too; and so Isolde’s Dress Shop was born.”

“Yours Aye, Linna Bennet”- Born and Raised in Glasgow, Linna was a singer all her life; performing in lounges around the city. When the Great War hit, she had her portrait taken to send with her sweetheart to the front lines, not expecting him to return to her alive. However, return he did, and soon after they were married and had two children together, with Linna being forced to take up the mantle of an unhappy, bored housewife. After her husband died in the 1950s, Linna travelled the world until her own death in the 70s.

“Music Man”- Joseph Pinkett, who had followed his families wishes and gone to university, graduated and found his degree unhelpful in finding employment. After a few years of working jobs he felt suffocated in, he had a psychotic breakdown, left his family home and bought a menagerie of musical instruments, intending on making his fortune as a musician. Unfortunately he had never had any aptitude for music and his new career path never took off. He was eventually arrested for petty crimes, for which he was imprisoned, and died a few years later while incarcerated of the flu.

Photographer Amy Friend finds vintage images online, in vintage shops or in old family albums and then alters them by allowing tiny holes of light to pass through. The result is an incredibly mesmerizing series called Dare alla Luce, an Italian phrase used to describe the moment of birth, as she aims to give the photographs back to the light.

In todays studio session, I had a group discussion with the tutor and four of my classmates where we each tried to narrow down what our statement of intent for our projects were. At first I struggled, since I still didn not have a solid concept behind any of my work, but after speaking to the tutor and after him giving me some guidance on topics and artists i should research, I managed to narrow it down to creating and presenting narratives for a series of vintage photographs using found objects.

Thoughts on experiment progression

After having completed the workshop sessions, I have come to a few conclusions on where I want my project to progress. I find that I much prefer the analogue format from my experiments, especially the polaroids. Since I have chosen to work mostly with vintage and antique photographs, i think that producing my work digitally would be less suitable than producing physical works. However, I prefer the themes from my digital experiments, with how I overlaid old pieces of writing and documents on top of the vintage photographs. I still can’t think of a solid concept to my work, though I know I want it to involve the vintage photographs and some sort of theme revolving around death/relics/artifacts/forgotten stories. I will work on this some more in our next studio session

A short video I made during the digital workshop experimenting with Premier video software. I found that I didn’t like this format for my work as much as I did the analogue experiments I made

Digital workshop experiments. I find I like these experiments less than the analogue ones, as i find the physical format of the previous experiments works better with the vintage photographs. However, I like how the “marion Gaynor” image turned out, because I like how the overlaying of the illustrations and documents suggests a story about the subject. I like the “love Letter” image less, because I don’t think replacing the faces of the subjects with skulls has the same effect as what I had in my head, and I think it looks too heavy handed and superficial. I do like the overlaying of the love letter though, especially since the old fashioned hand writing adds to my overall effect.

Some more of my experiments from the analogue workshop. With these ones I polayed around with surrounding the vintage photographs with found objects and images to create a visual effect. I like how they turned out looking.
