The images from the first SubOkavango series, shot in the spirit of exploration and documentation, could arguably be interpreted as accidental footnotes to the images shot by Peter Henry Emerson in 1886, during the dawn of photography as an art form. In particular, I am thinking of his image Gathering Water Lillies who documents a young couple who made a living collecting water lilies from the Norfolk Broads. Flying over the Okavango Delta one can clearly see the paths made by elephants and hippos as they traverse this watery oasis in the Kalahari desert. SubOkavango 02-06 - This print work from the second SubOkavango series has been on my wall for a few years now and it continues to grow on me every day. There is an arboreal resonance to the stems of these lilies that belies their immersion in water, and the overall warmth and luminosity of the palette is deeply reassuring. The print work currently faces the dining room table and is best viewed at night when there are zero reflections on the glass. Hippos and elephants have been nicknamed the architects of the Okavango Delta, in the sense that the paths and tunnels they create channel water in different directions. As much as the craft of photography is an enabler of travel and exploration, both inner and outer, it is a rich crucible for the creation of friendships that stretch way beyond the shoot. I first worked with the Foster Brothers, Craig and Damon, in 2009 during the making of the documentary "Into the Dragon's Lair" in the Okavango Delta and that collaboration continues to this day.
