Week 10: Online filters

Before watching the Ted talk I genuinely thought that the internet wasn't biased at all and all ways was providing good information. But after watching the Ted talk I was totally surprised and cant believe that the search engines we use filter out information that is given to us. I personally don’t like this because I don’t want biased information sent to my computer. If I search something in Google I want all the information about the subject not what Google “thinks” I want to know. And even Facebook is making certain posts disappear from my wall, I honestly found that very surprising. After watching this Ted talk Im starting to think that the internet is becoming a little to invasive with our personal lives and shouldn't be monitoring what we search or editing what we see. 

I think in todays age it is very easy to collect information that isn't biased when conducting research. But obviously all information has a little bias in it because it is formed by other peoples opinions or findings. So as long as you collect enough information and are able extract enough information to form your own opinion or find enough common points in your research to create an idea.

Online and Offline

I think that the creation of social media has done a wonderful thing for the people on this planet. I can bring people together who live half way around the world and also makes communication easier in general. But there is also a bad side to being able to connect with everyone at once, its not just good thoughts going through these systems. Over the last decade or so cyber bullying has become more and more of a problem among teens and young adults. With cyber bullying I think it becomes much more simple to tease and harass individuals because all you have to do is press a button. The bully doesn't see the reactions of the victim and there for doesn't see the effects it has on him or her. I a strange way traditional bullying is almost better because when a bully sees the person they are bullying it effects them to because they have to physically cause harm to them wether it verbal or physical. But when bullies are able to cause people pain without being face to face it creates a kind of god complex and the bully thinks nothing can happen to them even though nothing is ever erased online.

The Hypercitation

Personally when it come to citing my papers, it is the parts I hate the most about writing. citing, I think is an outdated and obsolete way to give and author credit for something. With Hypercitation it would make it muck easier to cite papers. just a simple copy and past and you have a citation. which I think would be way simpler than having to find and put all the information into a program like easybib. I cant tell people how many times I have tried to use that site and was unable to find all the requirements for a proper citation. Also Hyperciting could even help people conduct research more swiftly and effectively. This could benefit research because it would be so much easier when reading a paper and while reading you see a point that you really like and want to put in your paper you click the link and, BOOM, you go right to the page with even more information that could potentially be used for a paper. I don't know about anyone else but I have never read a paper, looked at the citations and went and found the article that was cited. Hypercitations should and needs to work it's way into the process of writing papers because i would just benefit everyone in the research process.

Having a college degree is very crucial to getting a good job. Most people without college degrees cannot get a well paid job and have to settle for minimum wage. I agree agree 100% with the article and the response you gave to it. College degrees are very important in the work place and people need to acquire them to be successful in the real world as well as being able to conduct reasearch effectivly.

Swimming in the Internet

A college degree is one of the most important and sought after things in the job market today. and if one doesn't have one it could be very hard to get a well paying job. But even people with degrees come into the work force with a disadvantage, and its not because that some people aren't smart enough with the knowledge they have acquired. But rather they lack the ability to conduct effective research on a topic to further their knowledge. This is vary vital skill in the work place as well as in college, because people need the ability to effectively gain additional knowledge and further that of what they already know. Employers don't like to be given short simple answers when they ask you about something or when asked to write a report about a specific topic. Not only is research skills important in the workplace it is just as equally important in college. If one does not have the ability to to go into a library and easily find the materials they need it could be vary hard to produce a well written paper or project. Another thing that is particularly useful in library research and is not often used are the librarians. They are the unsung hero's of library research and should be used and appreciated as much as possible.

Info Today

 Information is a terribly important aspect of our lives in the modern world. information today has the ability to change the way we think or an unlimited amount of knowledge by simply typing into a search bar. The abilities of travel that information has today is amazing wether it be through the computer, books, or cell phones and the role it plays in our lives is enormous. Now that information has this ability it has a major influence in our lives. Without out information in our lives we would live much simpler lives, simply because we wouldn't be able to share knowledge with each other. If we didn't have this ability even for a single day how could anyone make it thorough the day? If this happened it could seriously hinder the way our lives operate, like not being able to look up homework assignments on D2L. Information to me is very important, I crave it actually. If I didn't have the ability to look up something on the internet wether it be something to do for an assignment or if something interested me and I needed to to find out more information about it would kill me not being able to know. Information can be accessed in countless ways these days. But my favorite ways to access it would have to be either through my cell phone because it is so mobile and a portal of information, and my laptop computer because of the same reasons along with the bigger screen. 

There is a very common saying that "knowledge is power" and the truth of the fact is that its a true statement. If someone has the ability to control information and to whom it is distributed to they could hypothetically control any number of people. A prime example would be the emperors or Rome. They told there people that they were gods and people didn't know otherwise because that is the way people were raised.
