“Alright, be honest with me. Do you think Mel is gonna kill me when she sees the birthday present I got her? ”
Alina:
She wished her conscience allowed her to run. It was more fun poking fun at Rian when Alina didn’t end up being sat on. In public. Whatever. She rolled her eyes, struggling under Rian’s grasp. “Alright so, I totally get the point, it’s just like – you’re getting dirt on my face? If I break out I’m probably gonna sue? Do you have that kinda money? No. Didn’t think so.”
Rian couldn’t help but laugh at what Alina was saying. “You say this as if you’d win the lawsuit. What if ya don’t? What if a judge just laughs and dismiss the whole case,” they raised an eyebrow - as if Alina could see them. They took a moment, a long one, before getting off of her back. “Isn’t mud good for the face, anyway? Aren’t they used in spas? ” well, that’s what they see on TV.
Fishman:
@frostfordstart
“Twenty dollars right now, all yours, no strings attached,” Sol states, holding up the twenty he spoke of, before adding one string adjacent caveat, “If you can guess the weirdest cause of a fire I’ve ever uncovered. One guess maximum. Go.”
“Not to steal the main plot of Contagion, but maybe a bird - or bat - flew by with a lit cigarette and dropped it into someone’s chimney,” they raised an eyebrow. They eyed the twenty bucks before shifting their gaze on him, “Am I winning the twenty bucks or not, fishman.”
Adam:
“Yeah, I’d give that about two minutes before you hated it.” Maybe even less, but he’s being generous.
“Who said you gotta do anything like that at all? Can’t we just go down to the creek and look for salamanders and crawfish, like when you were a kid?” He’ll mention how Rian used to be attached to his leg when they were a kid as much as possible. “Me? I’d never do that.”
“This sounds like a challenge, I bet I can last five minutes.”
“Why can’t I do both? Be unpredictable while looking for salamanders? It would be a fun time,” they grinned. “But if we’re really gonna look for some salamanders and crawfish, I need to get my running foot,” they pointed out. It was shameless the way Rian used to follow Adam around. They were basically glued to his leg. “I got my eyes on you.”
Ethan:
“Yeah, I think I’ll pass… thank you, though.”
“Boo, you’re boring,” they teased with a sly grin, “Besides the whole FOMO with horror movies, how’s everything been going Anyone I gotta fight? ”
Owen:
“I think I’m a little too old to be throwing a pool party.” In truth, Owen couldn’t recall the last time he had been to any kind of party that wasn’t thrown for a child’s birthday. Though he knew that wasn’t what Rian was getting at. His gaze flickered to their face in just enough time to see the poorly innocent smile they presented, a chuckle emitting from his own lips in response. They were attractive, there was no denying that. He just felt slightly out of his depth when it came to flirting. Either he tried too hard or not at all, it always ended up with him feeling guilty anyway. “The best I can offer you is a refill to uh, help you cool down.”
“Oh, no one is too old to throw a pool party,” that was a lie, there a few people they know that should not throw a pool party. But they will not discourage Owen from this if it meant they get to see him shirtless. He had a nice laugh and a smile. They bet other things about him are nice too. Rian raised their eyebrow, “What are you offering? ” They tilt their head to the side, “Drinks, of course.”
Ethan:
“That’s… I guess that’s a good point. Though I did kind of have FOMO when everyone saw IT without me.”
“If you want, Nick and I can reenact the movie for ya.”
Jamie:
He sighed in relief, grateful they were understanding. “Sometimes you have to learn things the hard way, and I learned that I value my life way more than dares. That was the scariest one I ever did, honestly.”
“That’s weak,” they let out a breathless laugh before pressing their lips together. Not the best comment to make. “Hmm, ignore that,” what they just said, “or not.” They waved their hand as if that was supposed to take back what they said. They weren’t the one that was just choked for doing a dare. “I’ve done scarier runs, ya just gotta be fast when ya try to make your escape.”
Santiago:
“Come here every night to practice.” He grinned, but the statement was false. He came to drink, the pool was an added bonus. At their statement, Santiago quirked his head to the side. He’d had enough beer to be intrigued. “Well, alright then. Why not? What’cha proposin’?”
“Ya don’t say? ” a smirk formed on their lips. If he practiced so much, then they have to make it more interesting. It’s a good thing they have no shame, right? “Whoever loses have to strip naked or half-naked if you’re too scared,” they gathered the billiard balls into the triangle rack. “unless you have a better idea.”
Adam:
“Even those could need repair or replacement in a couple years.” It’s something he and his sister have already talked about. They always want to make sure Rian has access to what they need.
“Start cryin’? Me? Nah, I’m used to this by now. Developed some pretty thick skin after you came along,” he jokes. He ignores the part about not being able to accept compliments and instead laughs when they think he’s gonna snap someday. “I’d be no good at tryin’ to get y’all back. There’s too many of you against me.”
“Oh, please don’t remind me,” they pinched the bridge of their nose. “Just put me in a wheelchair and push me around,” they chuckled with a shrug of their shoulder. They both knew that was something Rian wouldn’t want. They were as active as they could be, considering their circumstances.
“I guess I’m gonna have to start changing that up,” they raised an eyebrow, “I can’t be predictable.” It would probably scare him if they start acting real sweet, but they’ll do what they have to do. He can ignore their comment about not accepting compliments, for now. They will corner him about it later on. “That may be true, but I wouldn’t put this pass you to try to throw me off.”

“It’s not raining so unless God opened the heavens and you’ve been struck by lightening and paralyzed, can you not just stand there and help me.”
Rian pushed their hair behind both of their ears to show off their hearing aid. They signed, and mouthed, “I can’t hear you.” They could hear her, but they didn’t like their attitude.
Frank:
“Of course you are.” Frank chuckled as Rian copied him and he downed the rest of the beer before speaking agian. “What ‘bout fifty bucks to start with? Unless you wanna go higher which is fine by me.” He shrugged before getting up from the stool.”
“I’m feeling a little risky tonight, let’s make it a hundred bucks,” they got up from the stool. They made their way to the pool table, gathering the billiard balls into the triangle rack. “Plus, there this item on amazon I really wanna get,” they laughed.
Alina:
She should’ve seen it coming. Actually, she had seen it coming, but running for it wasn’t as fun when she knew she’d make it out. The thrill in her younger years came from the adrenaline that coursed through her as Rian was an inch away from grabbing hold from her. She yelped, screaming a little once Rian’s hand hooked around her neck. Her body stiffened and she frowned, trying to smack their arm enough that they’d let go. “You think I won’t?” She threatened through spurts of laughter, as if she even remotely had any advantage. “I can spell it out for you if you didn’t get it the first time.”
The smacking of their arm only made Rian tighten their grip. “Aw, she has jokes,” they tilted their head as they looked down at Alina. They brought one leg up to hit the back of her knee, guiding her to the floor. Who would’ve thought, from the beginning of their conversation, Rian would’ve ended up sitting on top of Alina as she was laying on the ground. They hold both of her hands behind her back, “You couldn’t just let me know peace, huh? ”
Jamie:
Jamie’s eyes widened. “Sorry! I’m sorry! It was a dare.” He held his hands up in surrender. “I didn’t mean anything by it, I swear.” He frowned. “Really, I’m so sorry.”
They stared at him for a moment before pulling their hand back. A dare. They let a sigh leave their lips. This is some shit they could’ve easily gotten themselves into as well. Rian was trying not to be too mad about it as they bit the inside of their cheek. They understand following a bet a little too well. “I got you the first two times,” they waved their hand. They let out a deep breath before shaking their head, “I guess -- actually I’m not, but kudos to you doing the dare.”
Tuck:
He had heard about the McDowell family game nights many times and knew well that as soon as the games were out of the box, things got really intense. “Does he knew that you’ve got those pictures of him?” he asked knowing that they probably used the photos against him day in and day out. Adam never got a day of rest from shenanigans. “I think a takedown would be a lot more fun so I’ll give you that one.”
Frostford wasn’t anything like New York but it felt like New York didn’t have anything on their small town. Frostford never slept even when it seemed like the gossips were recharging their batteries for a new day of spreading every bit of information around faster than the speed of sound. “New York is an entirely different beast but I think it doesn’t hold a candle to everything that goes down here.”
Thinking about their words for a moment he chose to ignore the topic of the fire department. They had been back for an entire year and Tuck didn’t know. The feelings that were now surging inside him were a mix of confusion and a bit of anger for obvious reasons but it wasn’t as if Rian owed him anything. “You’ve been back for almost a year?” he asked, brows raised. If there was anyone that he thought would have been open with him, it was Rian. They were the one person he trusted would at least tell him about their niece or nephew’s wellbeing. “An entire year and you somehow we never ran into each other? That’s interesting… Bet Marissa’s been back in town for ages now too then and is really good at avoiding me.” He took a few steps back from them, getting ready to walk away, “I hope you’ve been havin’ a real good time this past year.”
“He always peaks one eye open, and then just falls back asleep. He’s used to it, he just lets it happen,” they laugh with a shrug of their shoulder. “Every year, I frame the pictures I take of him and give to him for his birthday,” they told Tuck with a wide grin on their face, “Maybe one day, as a present, I’ll team up with him.”
“It’s a lot more chaotic here since it’s so much smaller than New York,” they bit their bottom lip. This place was a lot to take in. They didn’t realize it at first, but after coming back from being medically discharged? And then coming back after their self-discovery journey? It was a lot more overwhelming then they thought it would be.
They furrowed their eyebrows as he spoke. They noticed the change in his body language. Rian had a feeling this would happen at some point, but not this soon. They pressed their tongue against the inside of their check. “I’ve been around town. It wasn’t a secret that I was back,” yeah, he had a fair point. But they never purposely avoided him, except for today when they tried to walk away. “I go running every morning,” especially after Adam got them a running foot, “I could say the same for you.” Now was NOT the time for Rian to become defensive. They knew he had every right to be angry about the situation their sister put him in. But that wasn’t their fault. They were only twelve when this all happened.
It was not the first time Rian got resentment for something that didn’t involve them. Always the scapegoat. They understood what their sister did was wrong, and if their mama didn’t make them promise to not say anything, they would’ve told him. They are trying their best with the pressure they’re under. But, damn, wouldn’t it be nice for someone to notice that Rian lost their sister when they were only twelve years old? Their relationship wasn’t the best, it wasn’t a secret. One day she was there, and the next day, she’s not. They spent years thinking it was because she hated them.
“I bet, if she was in town, she’d go to you before she’d go to me.”
Rian crossed their arm over their chest, tilting their head to the side, “What good time could I have possibly had? ” They knew, the further he started backing away, the harder it was going to get for them to hear him.
Chandler:
location: dyer house
“I feel like I’m twenty,” Chandler said to his friend. “If I was one of the many twentysomethings that have a kid in this town.”
“What, are you saying you’re too old to party?” they raised an eyebrow before tilting their head to the side. They let a pout form on their lip as they teased, “Does the old man need a nap? ”
