a call in the night
It was late and the streetlights were flickering on and the snow hadn't let up on bit. It was still a total white-out outside and Kotori doubted visibility was very good... but here was hoping for the best. She dialled in Rio's home number and hoped she'd hear her voice on the other end.
Ring... ring... ring...

She wouldn’t cry. She wouldn’t cry. She wouldn-
Shit.
A loud sniffle had escaped as well as a few stray tears that dropped onto the girl’s shoulder. She shoved her away as gently as one with a broken heart could manage, grabbed her coat, and ran out the front door.
It was a little too late to call out to Rio in the white-out blizzard of a snowstorm they were having in Heartland City when Kotori realized something was wrong and that her friend had been... crying?
Had she really been crying? Normally she was so strong and tough, it was why Kotori admired her so much. But even the hardest exterior had to crack... she just hoped she hadn't been the cause.
I'll just have to call her apartment later and hope she arrives home safely.

Right. Of course… what else was she to Kotori? Certainly not romance material.
An awkward laugh oozed out of her lips. “R-Right… friends…” She fought desperately to hold back her tears.
And found herself sitting up abruptly. “I-I’m sorry I should get going now..!” She uttered out with a shaky tone before heading over to the front of the house quickly.
She would not let this girl see her cry if she could help it.
"Oh, did we lose track of time! Sorry for taking up so much of your time, I should've known you have other things to do," Kotori apologized, quickly following Rio to the front of the house.
"I hope you have a safe ride home, Rio! I'll see you at school." Kotori wrapped her in a hug before unlocking the front door to help her out.

She nodded happily at the green-haired girl and waited.
Once the girl handed her her mug she took it into her smooth hands, feeling the warmth it emitted. “It’s working nicely already!”
They sat there laughing and telling stories and occasionally taking sips from their mugs.
Rio loved this and was trying to soak it up as much as she could. She loved the attention from the girl. She was so caught up in it in fact- that she didn’t realize she’d slipped up majorly.
"I really like you."
Kotori was really enjoying herself, not having realized that she actually did miss having girl-talks when all she'd ever really been surrounded with was Yuma and Tetsuo's dorky shenanigans and duelling strategies and competitions. She liked being around Rio a lot, and she loved having someone to talk to about things other than duelling.
It was so much fun!
So when Rio said she really liked Kotori...
"I really like you too! You're such an amazing friend, Rio!"

"I don’t have hot chocolate much actually, so I’m fine with whatever you think!" She grinned before a snort made it through her nose. "Four, huh? That boy really enjoys being hyper all the time, doesn’t he?"
She watched as Kotori put the mix it and stirred it. Well okay she wasn’t watching her stir it… she was just watching her in general. She couldn’t help it! The girl was too cute! Her mannerisms made Rio want to run over and squeeze her! She wouldn’t do that though.
"Okay! You're getting three, like me," Kotori said, bouncing on her feet a little as she impatiently waited for the kettle to finish and dropped the amount into Rio's mug. "Ahhh, this'll thaw our hands out nicely," she said giggling.

Rio had to say she was impressed with decor throughout the building. It looked amazing! What she wouldn’t give to set up her home like this!
She took to sitting on a tall wooden stool by the counter, watching as her crush arranged everything with such grace.
"Ohh, no thanks, I’ll just stay here and wait." She hummed. It’d be better if she didn’t see sewing equipment right now anyway, it’d ruin her good mood.
Kotori nodded. "Alright. So, are you a two scoop or three scoop kind of girl? Yuma likes four because he's crazy and so does Tetsuo. Cathy likes two, but... how much chocolate do you like?"
She measured out three heaped tablespoons for herself as per the instructions on the container, dumping each one into her bright pink mug decorated with weird-looking flowers. Something she'd painted as a kid and her mother had kept for whatever reason.

She had to admit she was a little disappointed about not meeting Kotori’s mother. She had sounded like a lovely lady!
Though, now that she thought of it… wouldn’t that mean Kotori and her would be alone together? Oh dear…
God Rio stop being a giant dork! So you’re alone with the girl you like, big deal!
Snapping out of her internal argument, Rio replied; “Sure! Thanks.”
Kotori finished hanging their coats on the rack and led the way inside. "So, that's our living room, and that's the bathroom over there if you need it, and here's our kitchen... and my room's upstairs!" she listed, pointing out the different places as she took two mugs out from the cupboard and started filling up the kettle with water.
"And all the sewing stuff is in the basement, if you wanna look at it?"

Rio stepped inside and took her boots off in the doorway, she didn’t want to track any dirt or snow in after all. She followed her friend’s lead and tok off her coat, revealing her outfit from beneath it.
She now took the time to glance around. For the entrance, Rio could already tell that the whole house was probably very well furnished and well-kept.
"Thank you for having me over."
"No problem! You saved me by bringing me home, after all!"
Kotori called out into the house announcing their arrival, but received no response. "Ah, mum must still be at work, I guess, so we've got the place to ourselves till she gets back!" She grinned. "So, hot chocolate?" she asked as she pulled off her boots.

"If you feel grateful that it’s me, then go ahead."
Kaito takes the towel, looking down at the gathering puddle of rainwater at his feet and sighs. “Sorry about that. Mind if I stay until the rain lets up a little?”
Kotori leans down and smiles at the robot that's still using its odd blow-dryer mechanism on Kaito. "Thanks for giving me a customer, Orbital!"
Straightening up, she sets her arms on the counter and nods. "Sure you can. If it's not done raining by the time we close up, my mum can drive you home! She's picking me up. You know, if you don't mind telling us your address." She giggles. "Even Yuma doesn't know and he's always complaining about it."

Kaito shrugs as he takes a sip of the drink. Not a bad choice. “Not really. I just got caught in the rain and Orbital dragged me here because it was nearby.”
Orbital’s still frantically rolling around his feet, attempting to dry him from all angles. Kaito rolls his eyes.
Kotori giggles. "I guess I should probably thank Orbital for giving me a customer this late at night, huh?" she says, before grabbing a clean towel from under the counter and throwing it at him.
"Here, to dry off," she says. "You're getting my freshly mopped floors wet."

She nodded and got off of the vehicle quickly, making sure to set it’s alarm and put the keys to it in her pocket. If she hadn’t done either of those things Ryoga would kill her.
The young woman followed closely behind the younger girl, making sure to walk slowly so she wouldn’t fall. Ahh snow. She loved it, yet sometimes it just… no.
They finally got up to Kotori’s front porch, and Rio was feeling nervous. She’d never been to Kotori’s house before. She’d meet her mother too!
Kotori unlocked the front door and led the way inside before beginning to shed her winter layers. "Welcome to my humble home?" she said with a bit of a blush from the chilly wind that was starting to fade.
It was nice to be inside again, with proper heating, warm rugs, and the promise of hot chocolate.

"Yes!" She quickly answered, jumping at the chance to be with her friend longer, not having a chance to catch herself. Shit. Now Kotori would think she was desperate.
"I mean… sure. That sounds nice." Rio smiled and tried to redo her slip up. Very smooth.
Kotori giggled. "Alright! Come on then. I think it's fine if you leave the motorcycle on the street corner, people park here all the time," she says as she begins to lead the way through the snow-filled sidewalks that still haven't been shovelled.
The perks of suburb life in the winter: the sidewalks are never shovelled unless the people inside the houses have snowblowers. Or Obomi, in Yuma's case.
