Ohhh, what number's that? Two!
I know it’s a lot of fun to see the drivers enjoying themselves dressing up as cowboys in Austin. But it bothers me just how much Texas is glorified during the US GP. This year even more than most, Texas is an extremely problematic state.
The Texas government is trying to restrict rights to pretty much every marginalized group. As soon as Roe v Wade was overturned, Texas immediately started to pass some of the nation’s most restrictive abortion laws. Just two weeks ago, a federal judge ruled on a suit brought by Texas, resulting in a severe loss of protections for trans children and LGBTQ+ workers in the state. And, based on the law brought into question in this suit (part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act), the ruling sets a precedent that could result in the allowance of increased workplace discrimination based on race, sex, and religion. Analysts are currently nervous that Texas is working towards finding a way to regain the right not to recognize same-sex marriages in the state.
The terrible tragedy in Uvalde, TX, where nineteen children and two adults were brutally murdered in a school shooting, occurred just five months ago. Since then, not a single anti-gun law has been passed in the state, meaning the odds of this happening again are no lower than directly after the event. In fact, gun ownership increased after the shooting.
And of course, Texas is a state that continues to contain systemic racism, and continues to elect far right-leaning politicians that blatantly state their goals to restrict civil liberties and their beliefs that the 2020 presidential election was not valid, spurning the most basic of the US government’s tenets: democracy
I could go on, but I’d be here all day. In all, I will be very disappointed if those drivers that speak out against discrimination regularly do not mention the horror show that is developing in Texas. Despite what might be on screen this weekend, Texas is not exactly a lovely place filled with rootin tootin cowboys that eat barbecue for every meal.
