why are so many people on this post saying things like “oh so what abt aromantic people then 🙄” like um… stumbling as u give up your seat for an elderly lady on the bus. stroking your friend’s hair as they cry in your arms. someone you care abt making you a long lovely playlist of songs you might like. attentively listening to your sibling as they talk excitedly about something they care abt. the sound of hundreds of people in unison singing a song they love at a concert. someone peeling a clementine and saving half of it for themselves and giving the other half to you. letting your cat crawl all over you even though her claws are scratchy. sitting in comfortable silence with someone. the pride shining in your grandfather’s eyes when you facetime him and tell him abt what you’ve been up to. taking a sip of your friend’s boba. people grinning at you when u blow out the candles on your birthday cake… these things aren’t love to you? you guys don’t consider that love? really? truly?

It was a hiss of surprise that slipped through your lips, your eyebrows furrowed as you walked into your studio, first noting the figure curled beneath a blanket on your pull-out, and then the squirm that told you Ash hadn’t slept alone.

You hadn’t liked the beast since it had bitten through the cords of your iMac, frying its hard drive and all the files you were yet to back-up.

Ash had been on his knees, begging for your forgiveness as you worked tirelessly to replace what you’d lost while Hyoeun had scolded him for bringing the ferret to work in the first place. The little creature however had done nothing more than snivel, and you knew then that you’d made an enemy for life.

Despite your annoyance with him, further fueled by your lack of sleep in comparison to he, you closed the door quietly and tip-toed into the room, grimacing at the ferret that burrowed further into Ash’s arms.

It wasn’t unusual for Ash to visit your studio, though you were a little more than surprised that it was here that he chose to come after storming out of your apartment last night.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rather than disturb him or his pest, you turned your attention to your screen and worked in almost silence, the only noise being Ash’s light snore and the tap of your stylus against the drawing pad, your eyes occasionally landing on his face as he slept, your heart panging.

It was hard to remember why you’d argued but you flinched at the memory of how fiercely you both had fought. You were both stubborn and hot-tempered and last night was a prime example of how bad it could be.

The air in the room shifted making you aware that despite your attempt to be quiet, he’d woken up, his eyes locked on your back as if he’d known you’d come here to de-stress, drawing out your frustration until your wrist ached.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘Come here,’ he said softly despite his croaky morning voice, any trace of anger from the night before was long gone as he propped himself on his elbow, watching as your bottom lip trembled, betraying the tough act you’d been trying to keep up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He said nothing as you crossed the room and slipped into his open arms, enveloping you in his warmth and pressing his lips to your forehead, Huchu now demoted to the floor.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Neither of you apologised, again too stubborn to vocally admit that you were wrong just yet, but with Ash you didn’t always need words. Sometimes all it took was him holding you tight against him as if you would disappear, that told you all you needed to know.

I didn’t mean what I said, his embrace told you.
You responded by pressing against him, your head buried in his chest; me neither.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He let out a content huff, the fingers he’d been using to idly draw patterns against your back had begun to lull you both to sleep.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘I’m sorry,’ you apologised softly as Ash’s breathing slowed and you were sure he’d fallen back to sleep, your face hot with surprise as his chest rumbled in reply as he admitted quietly, ‘Me too.’

It was true that with Ash you didn’t always need words though it didn’t hurt to use them every once and awhile. Your apology had come easy this time, a reflection of his own remorse that you’d felt as he traced silent I love you’s across your back earlier, the promise of forever on the tips of his fingers.
