Adult Swim Orders Live-Action Pilot From Dan Harmon, 'Rick and Morty' Scribe
Heading into the upfront market, Adult Swim released its latest slate on Thursday morning - ordering three new pilots and announcing a new Walking Dead-themed Robot Chicken special.
Among the pilot orders is a new live-action comedy from the team behind Rick and Morty. Scribe Tom Kauffman and Paul Isakson co-created the project, joined by Rick and Morty’s Dan Harmon as executive producer, which follows talented convicts battling for supremacy inside a “prison for the performing arts.” Aptly titled Art Prison, it hails from Harmon’s Starburns Industries.
The other two pilots, half-hours like Art Prison, are both animated. Lazor Wulf is about a wolf who carries a laser on his back, naturally, and comes from Henry Bonsu and Daniel Weidenfeld. Chuck Deuce, which follows a NorCal surfer activist who loses his memory when he’s slammed by a giant wave, comes from Lars Kenseth.
“Adult Swim is a one-of-a-kind destination that simply knows its audience,” said Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang president and general manager Christina Miller. “Mike Lazzo and his team have always found new and interesting ways to produce and distribute content that can’t be found anywhere else.”
Adult Swim’s slate is lengthy, but one notable addition is another Robot Chicken special - this one inspired by one of TV’s highest-rated series: The Walking Dead. A collaboration among Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich along with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and its showrunner, Scott M. Gimple, will follow in the tradition of the franchise’s spoofs of Star Wars and DC comics.
“Adult Swim has developed a relationship with millennials like no other media brand,” added Turner ad sales president Donna Speciale. “That connection is a key access point for advertisers who want to utilize an authentic voice across custom, branded content and partnerships rich with direct to fan experiences.”
