TUMBLR’S NEW SAFE MODE IS TARGETING LGBT CONTENT

these are just two quick examples i could find. tumblr introduced a new “safe mode” making it so “sensitive” posts were blocked on your dashboard. it’s supposed to be able to be turned off on both desktop and mobile in your settings: unless you are a minor.

i’ll begin with the fact that most people who try to turn off safe mode have been unable to. it’s reset as soon as they re-enter the tumblr app. as for minors, you are unable to remove the feature at all.

so far, i’ve seen it block a steven yeun gifset, an x-men gifset, a mario kart video, and many LGBT+ posts. that means, for minors who are LGBT, they are unable to see this content. it is not pornographic and does not contain gore. there is absolutely no reason it should be blocked for minors.

tumblr needs to remove the feature immediately, work on it some more, and roll it out again in the future with the option for ALL users (minors included) to turn it off.
