This Beautiful Life || Roark & Riley
Roark cringes at his own awkwardness, mentally berating himself for losing his composure when he practiced so hard not to before coming out to Iron Island.
And what the hell was he thinking, anyway? Riley probably wasnāt into guys. Hell, heād never even made the effort to pursue ANYBODY before. Why had he ever thought Riley would be interested in someone like him of all things?
As far as he was concerned, nobody loved him and nobody ought to love him, and that was that.
Itās several moments before he realizes heās been holding onto Rileyās hand for longer than is appropriate. Blushing deeply, he starts to draw it away when Riley suddenly squeezes it. Roark flinches, and his head is reeling and his breath escapes him, but it doesnāt matter because his mind canāt clear anyway.
Oh god, whatās he doing?
And then, he feels a soft hand across his cheek, and Riley leans in.
A warm kiss, a brief state of elationā
And several emotions wash over his body like a torrential wave. In that moment, Roark feels vulnerable and exposed, like a naked, shivering whelp left out in a cardboard box in the rain.
His mind tells him to be happy, because this is what heās wanted for so many years, yet his gut churns with a feeling akin to dread.
"Bathroom," he whispers, lips barely even pursed into a stutter. "Iām going to use the b-bathroom nowā¦"
He takes off down the hall before Riley can get a word in edgewise. He doesnāt know why, but tears burn in his eyes and he feels nauseous.
Why, the logical part of him scolds, why are you running away? Why canāt you allow yourself to be happy just this once.
Because Iām scaredāRoarkās emotional side replies. Iām so frightened of taking risksā¦
Iām frightened.
"Goddamnit, Roark," he mutters to himself, steadying his breath. "Why are YOU of all people scared? You live in darkness, have seen people die⦠whatās wrong with you that you canāt do this? Do you want things to remain the same as they are?"
No.
I donāt want things to remain the same.
Iām miserable this way.
So just do it, his mind insists.
But what if Iām even more miserable afterwards?
No.
Throw caution to the wind.
Youāve waited too long for this, far too long.Ā
He takes a deep, ragged breath, and hesitantly starts walking back.
And then that walk turns into a run, to a full-throttled sprint. Heās still crying, but he canāt turn back now. Heās made his decision.
The lights in the kitchen are still on, and he can only hope Rileyās still thereā
He is.
For the second time today, he launches himself back in his arms.
But this time, heās sobbing hysterically.
And this time, he kisses him back, but on the lips.
"Is it really that obvious?" he whispers in Rileyās ear between hungry kisses. "If youāre going to kiss me, kiss me like you mean it."
When Roark collided with Riley once again, this time his lips pressed to his, he knew the exact reason Roark was here. He couldn't help but smile against the man's kisses. He had been waiting for this for a very long time. But he wasn't going to let Roark control this moment. No. That's not the way Riley worked.
Continuing to kiss Roark, he walked him backwards towards the living room. He had his hands firmly on his partners hips and bit lightly onto Roark's bottom lip. "Not so fast, lover boy." When they reached the couch, Riley pulled off of Roark and pushed him to the couch.
"Now talk." Riley was being pushy, but he needed answers. "You can't expect to throw yourself at me, and me just understand completely." He paused for a moment, thinking. "Why now?" He pulled his jacket off and sat down next to Roark. With one swooping motion, he moved Roark to his lap, one leg on each side.
Keeping his hands on his thighs, he was prepared to listen to Roark. He tried to make himself seem as calm, cool, and collected as possible, but on the inside, his character was breaking. When he needed someone, no one was there. And now. Now that he didn't need anyone, someone suddenly wants to be there. He didn't know how to take this.
This is so embarrassingā¦! Ankle, heal quickly!! What if someone sees me like thisā¦? Oh my⦠[blushes heavily]Ā

This Beautiful Life || Roark & Riley
What is this place, a sauna? Sweating, Roark wrings his palms, nervous beyond all belief. Now that heās here, he realizes how crazy this whole idea is. Is he seriously going to tell the guy he hasnāt seen in literally years that heās in love with him? How would Riley take that? Would he think heās a freak?
Yes, maybe he should spend some more time with him before confessing, but, butā¦
Although heās still on shaky feet, he lets Riley lead him to his home, and briefly his nervousness gives way to amazement at the sheer scope and size of the house.
"I built it myself, you know."
It would be an understatement to say Roarkās impressed.
To build this whole place with nothing but a Lucario to help him⦠heās either brilliant or has too much time on his hands. Probably both. And Roark thought he was strong.
Tall, dark, handsome, smart, kindā
And to think he actually knew a guy like this?
Closing his eyes, Roark thinks that maybe Riley would make a good miner, toiling all day with his shirt off and sweat glistening across his muscā
Roark cuts that thought off immediately.

Riley smirked at Roark's tongue tiedness. Roark had a way of keeping things interesting for Riley. He knew that Roark had been doing things other than Gym related stuff. Roark spends every second outside of the Gym down at the mines. Riley watches intently as Roark goes on shaking and trying to form words.
Have you been seeing anyone?
That was the only thing that Riley heard come out of Roark's mouth. Of course he hadn't. He had been hiding away on this island to make sure that he didn't see anyone. Riley could see that that was not what Roark had meant but didn't say anything. He just stared at the man.
Riley lifted his arms to the table, and folded them slightly. He was trying to keep proper form, trying not to anticipate what Roark what was trying to get at. Riley had gotten good at ignoring what he couldn't help as a child. The only thoughts right then filling the room were his own.
Roark had spoken too fast for Riley to comprehend at first, but soon he had understood. Roark just wanted to see him. No one wanted to see Riley. If anyone came out here, it was because they wanted something. Not see to him. Everyone who came out here tried to fix him. They didn't understand that being here was what he wanted.
Riley didn't hear his question and wasn't snapped out of his trance until he felt a temperature change in his hand. He didn't make a deal of it, as it was just water. The only thing that made Riley wince was feeling Roark's hands grab his. Roark's hands were warm, soft, comforting. He looked up at him as he frantically tried to dry his hands and keep them warm.
He listened to Roark ramble on, not really making any sense. This was Riley's turn to flip the cards and take charge. He flipped his hands so that he was the one holding Roark's hands. He looked him in the eyes before dropping his hands. One hand slowly moved to his cheek as his lips moved in fast to Roark's. He let his lips linger there for a moment before pulling back.
"Now," he stroked the man's cheek. "What is the real reason you're here?"

This Beautiful Life || Roark & Riley
Roarkās heart is pounding so hard itās in his throat and he gulps, trying to get ahold of himself. Now that heās actually here, he feels his chest tighten up and he buries his head in the folds of Rileyās suit jacket.
He isnāt sure why Riley does it, insisting on looking nice even though he lives in the wilderness, but he doesnāt mind. He appreciates his warmth and strength and calms down a bit, taking a few deep breaths to steady himself.
And in that moment he immediately feels awkward, inadequate. Hesitantly, he breaks away from Riley, shivering not with cold but nervousness. Heād been attracted to men many times before, a fact he was not happy to admit, but never like he had with Riley. Around other objects of his affection, he could at the very least keep himself composed.
Around Riley, though, heās an idiot, like heās twelve years old once more trying to cope with his first crush.
Then again⦠he had always been moreā¦Ā attachedĀ to Riley than anyone else. While coming off as schizotypal and standoffish in demeanor to most people, Roark had always adored Riley even before he developedā¦Ā feelings.Ā Of course, he had the advantage of knowing Rileyās eccentric behavior was a result of his Aura powers, but he only liked him the more for it. Riley was his mentor, his role model, the apple of his eye.

The look on Roark's face was understood by Riley. Riley having his own house after wanting to live on the island was irrational for how he behaved about moving to the island. He had made it very clear that he wanted to be on his own, away from civilization. For the longest of time, Riley had lived in the wilderness of the island, with the Pokemon and all. But he soon realized that he needed at least a house. Lucario was tired of the other Pokemon running around where he was trying to eat or sleep.
With Roark's arm hooked on his, he started walking towards his house. "I built it myself, you know." He was talking about the house, his house. Lucario came up behind him and nudged his arm and let out a cry. Riley cleared his throat and opened his mouth to speak again. "Of course, with the help of Lucario. I don't think I can do anything without him."
"Youāre not being fair."
"Oh, honey. You wouldn't know fair if it hit you in the face."
"Get a grip of yourself... that is, if it's okay with you... senpai."

This Beautiful Life || Roark & Riley
He runs as fast as his feet can carry him. Heās winded and he can feel a sharp pain in his side, but still he runs. He knows maybe he should slow down so as not to scare Riley off, but heās just too excited.
He wants to savor this moment for as long as possible. After all, he came here just to see his face again⦠amongst⦠other things. Bursts of joy like this are too few and far between for him these days, and he needs to hold onto it for all heās got, until the deed is done and he faces the inevitable rejectionā¦
Today, heās prepared to lose everything he has. He canāt keep living the lie heās kept up for year upon painful year on end. Itās better to have loved once and lost than to never love at all. That, he realizes now.
"Roark? What are you doing here?"
He⦠remembered him!
Roark doesnāt know why he wouldnāt, but it still makes him happy nonetheless. Sometimes, one needs to look to the simple things in life for happiness.
Heās overwhelmed with emotions. Love, fear, lust, nervousnessājust a little trepidationāitās hard for him to keep his thoughts straight. But his mind turned off hours ago and heās only thinking with his heart at this point. Giving one last push off his heel, he practically leaps into a hug, embracing a stunned Riley tightly.
Ā āW-What do you think Iām here for?ā he stutters, still wired and anxious. Upon realizing that what he said could be taken as being rude, he mentally berates himself and adds, āIāve missed you a lot.ā
He embraces him for a long time after that, longer than is probably appropriate, until he finally hesitantly lets go and gulps.
"Itās been too long."
Itās time to say it.
He canāt deny it anymore.
But first, he needs to work up the courage to part his lips.
Riley was taken back, and stumbled backwards, when he felt Roark's body slam against his. Roark's rocky scent bombarded Riley's nose. He hadn't felt Roark's body against his in such a long time, that he forgot how great of hugs that he gives.
Once the shock went through him, he wrapped his own arms around the man pressed against him. When Roark said he missed him, he didn't know what to think. He didn't think that people actually missed him. His parents didn't of course. They thought their kid was a freak, that was the reason he spent so much time on the island.
"Of course. I miss you too." And he didn't say it just because Roark said it. He said it because he meant it. After how much time they had spent together in previous years, Riley wasn't just going to forget about Roark. Roark meant too much to him to leave him in the past.
Even though Riley's brain was still trying to process the event that had just happened, his heart was glad that Roark was in his arms. "It has been too long." He finally was able to speak again after Roark lets him go. He straightens up and fixes his hat. "Why don't we go back to my place?"
