The embroidery. Here we go. The sixteen paragraph brain dump I've wasted my morning on that fifteen people will read.
It matters that it came from Helaena. She never says anything directly to your face. It comes sideways: a line thrown at Alicent, a stare held too long, and now a bit of needlework left out where someone will see it. People dismiss her but she's yet to be wrong.
The picture is Aemond, naked, cold, foetal, surrounded by red, a woman above him (Alys?), what looks like Harrenhal behind and on his chest what looks like an egg.
The pose isn't of a prince or a warrior or the one eyed monster. It's a baby. And it shows you exactly what we've watched him do: wake up from a nightmare, fold into Alys's lap and cry for his mum. Helaena has looked past the armour to the small helpless boy underneath which for a man whose entire personality is "I will never be caught being weak" is a pretty devastating and exposing way to be seen.
The red I think means several things, and I'm not going to commit to one. It could be his wound, the infected mess keeping him weak and vulnerable at Harrenhal. It's a womb, because he's curled up inside it. It's the God's Eye turned to blood, the water we know he's going to die on. And it could be fire which is the one I keep coming back to, because fire is where rebirth lives. It popped into my head because Ewan said it himself. He called Harrenhal the "White Lotus of Westeros," a spa you check into so your toxins can be drawn out, where you face the worst of yourself and come out a different person. Fire is cleansing. So put Aemond in a field of red, read it as a pyre, and Helaena has stitched the remaking in progress. He goes in as one man and comes out as whatever Alys, general manager of Harrenhal, decides the White Lotus version should be.
The egg works on lots of levels too. It's a callback, because Alys has already put a clutch in front of him, and here he is in the foetal position cradling one like it's his. He thinks he's been handed dragons. He's been shown choosing the thing that binds him to her.
But deeper than that it's his internal wound. The Targaryan child that was never given an egg. The neglected son who didn't get the birth right the others got in the cradle, who then had to go and claim the biggest dragon alive out of sheer spite to make up for it. So an egg placed in adult Aemond's arms isn't just Alys's offer. It's the cradle he never got, delivered decades late with strings attached. Not by his family. By the woman drawing his poison out. That's how you own a man completely - you supply the thing he never had.
And then we can go bigger and go universal: the unborn, the potential, fire in dormant form, the thing that only hatches in flame. So if we say red is a pyre, means the picture is a hatching. Except what comes out of Alys's fire isn't a renewed Aemond. It's her yield. That's where she slots into all this. We know from the book that she apparently gets a child out of him. So look at what she's growing: an egg and an heir, two crops off one man, both hers. It turns every tender moment into horticulture. She isn't nursing a prince. She's running an operation, and Helaena has drawn the whole harvest. The red isn't just his wound, it's her medium. He's foetal because he's the raw material, not the farmer. He thinks he's being mothered. He's being farmed.
I also think it's very interesting that she stitched the eye without the patch. The patch is the cover for the humiliation he's built a whole personality on top of. In the embroidery he doesn't get to keep it. Socket out, dignity off.
And then we can look at her line "He burns, but not with fire" which is ironically somewhere much colder, because for a Targaryen, fire is the self, the dragon, the name, the whole thing. The cruelty of the line is that he gets the rebirth without the flame that's supposed to power it. He goes into the pyre, toxins drawn out, self dissolved, but it isn't his fire doing it. It's Alys's. He gets the White Lotus treatment and comes out the far side as her product. Everything he had drains off and reconstitutes as the thing Alys owns and wants. It could also mean the infection, keeping him weak and potentially hallucinating. This the doorway into a theory I'm going to raise but not go into today, the one I reshared this morning: He is hallucinating many of his interactions from fever in the depths of a haunted castle.
Where did his outfit come from? He flew in wearing armour to take a castle, got stabbed and has been stuck in a ruin with basically one witch in it. There's no valet at Harrenhal. So the groomed Aemond is the dream and the bandaged, feverish, foetal one without the eyepatch is the truth. Same could go for the eggs. If the clutch belongs to the dream layer, Helaena has stitched the real him holding a thing that only exists in the fantasy, which is her collapsing the two on purpose.
I do find it really persuasive and a post will probably come this week, but I'm not committing to it today. I need to watch the episode again as a minimum, because a lot of it rests on whether anyone actually sees Aemond outside the feverish state from a trusted neutral perspective.
Overall though, the embroidery is a warning and a grief in one object. The prince the realm fears, drawn as a bleeding infant in a womb of a castle, the egg he was never given finally at his chest, a woman above him deciding his shape. If Alys is indeed playing and manipulating him, the method is right there in the thread. It never was going to be potions. She hands him back a version of himself he can't live without, gives him the egg his family never did, and grows a dragon and a child off him while he's grateful for the attention. That's a better class of cruelty than any drug.
And the sister everyone thinks is broken worked out with embroidery, what nobody else around him can see.
BTW, I've got another draft sitting in my folder that I'm too scared to post at the minute, which is that Aemond could possibly be the father of Helaena's child based on the line Unsullied Kings, but I've procrastinated enough for one day. Please don't come at me about that one.
