{ Mina-mun is a flake who’s been computer-troubled and freaking out over another fandom, so here’s my SpiraleFES info a million years late:

NO PLACE LIKE HOME DECOR - There will be an Isi merchant or two, and you bet Mina will find them and blow whatever’s left of her paycheck on candles, a wall hanging or two, at least three potted plants, and the impromptu dinner party she’ll inevitably have to host to make up the remainder of her bill. There will probably also be One Concern, though, so if she spots them she might be a little hard to find for a few days.

A ROARIN’ BOREALIS SKATING RINK - Mina is nothing if not a thrill seeker, so this will be one of her favorite places to be at night, when she’s not sleeping off a long day of training and fun. She’s never skated before, though, so be prepared for some clumsy.

SEED-GROWING CEREMONY - The Isi midsummer festival was a little while ago, but she’s still going to see this as a religious occasion, and be back in the Seshaia dancer’s costume and mask she made for the beginning of Depths back in October. If there are any other Isi NPCs there, which there probably will be, she’ll be dancing with them as well.

CANDLE LIGHTING FOR THE LOST - Candles for dead ancestors are a central part of Isi religious tradition. They’re still the main focus of Mina’s day-to-day worship. Though usually the one on the ancestor shrine in her house is sufficient, you can bet she’ll be here at least once, setting rafts afloat for all the ancestors she doesn’t know.

REFRESHING FRUITS - Mina has never tried an Earth-type melon before, so she’ll be interested in this just out of curiosity, and then even more so once she realizes she loves them.

NOBODY’S BORED! WALK - This will remind her a lot of the Sunset Festa last year, so she’ll be there looking for her favorites from that event (pearl-diving and the shooting range). Also there’s free food, so expect to see her here a lot.

TOO POOL FOR SCHOOL - Mina loves swimming. This will be her favorite daytime haunt when she’s off work, bar none - she may even ask Venom Snake if she can do some of her daily endurance training by swimming laps. She’s not half fish anymore (and the minor buffs left over from ye olde District Theta are absent in fresh water), but she learned to swim almost before she learned to walk, so she’s still really good at it.

TASTE OF HOME - She’ll also be quick to locate this other spot of Isi culture. Coxinhas of all sorts, other pastries, flatbread, vegetable pasta, about ten different ways of cooking fish... If she can afford it she’ll be eating a lot of lunches and dinners here, sometimes paying by inviting the vendor over to her house in return.

Mina’s getting tired. Becoming merfolk has unfortunately come with nothing in the way of superhuman stamina, and though hers has been getting better thanks to all her Battalion training, it’s still far from infinite. Her fingers are slick with blood and sweat, her arms are shaking with the effort of fighting for so long, so it’s only a matter of time before she gets sloppy, makes a mistake, does the unthinkable.

Mina drops her shotgun.

The demons don’t give her a moment to pick it up, either. One leaps at her and she’s forced to blast it back with a fireball to the face, so close to her own face that she’s afraid her hair will singe. Only reflexes born of Isi dagger fighting and Venom Snake’s sledgehammer punches save her from two more sets of shredding claws. She backs up, forced away from her fallen gun, and feels her spine hit someone else’s back, someone much larger than she is.

...Speaking of sledgehammer punches.

“Venom - uh, sir,” she gasps. “A little - a little help here?!”

friendship and fire.

“For the last time, I will be fine on land! Are you staying or aren’t you?!”

Mina glares at her last recalcitrant crewman - former crewman, if he decides not to fight with her in this final battle. Pandymion, Pan for short, grew up in Xalphina hearing all sorts of myths about merfolk, most of which were utter ixviran - or, to translate from the Isian, utter bullshit. Mina will not dry out if she spends a night on land, she does not have shark teeth, and she (unfortunately) can’t talk to fish. Pan is courteous and well educated for a pirate, and very adept with a jackknife, but she’s getting tired of explaining this stuff to him.

“As long as you’re sure,” he relents, “I’m with you, Cap’n.”

“Good.” Mina turns back to the remainder of her crew, after Cloonan bailed and Jem thought they’d best stay with the ship. Tella’s cleaning her cutlass in preparation for the fight; Herdley comforts his much smaller boyfriend Don with a hug from behind.

Privately, Mina hopes they’ll stay with her somehow after all this Fantasia business is over. They’re good people, especially the boyfriends, who only turned to piracy after they couldn’t find honest work and still be open about their relationship. She knows there’s not much chance, but she hopes anyway. Iruna, luck and fate, can be as fickle a mistress as the cats she’s also goddess of - as the gods give, so they take away. What’ll happen to her crew, if Spirale comes back?

“Now. All of you.” No time to think, no time to worry, just act. “Everyone’s gathering at the tree. Make sure you’ve got everything, say your last prayers, then - let’s give that Demon Lord a taste of her own hell.”

Mina, for her part, prays as she has before raids many times before: may Inti guard me, Kibuka guide me, and Dahora take me should I fall. The war-god does seem to be here, on this massive battlefield with what looks like half the population of Fantasia, officers and outsider “heroes” leading squadron upon squadron of soldiers from all four kingdoms. Mina recognizes several other merfolk she’s met while exploring underwater, and more than a few pirates and other thieves from the Guild.

The world turns white. Ofiuco confronts her demonic parent. Around her, Mina sees some of her fellow outsiders suddenly transformed, returning to what must be their ordinary selves outside Fantasia, but she makes no such change - her scales and fins and magic stay. She’s already leveled her shotgun at the demon-creatures before they even hit the ground, but soon finds that falling enemies move too fast for her to aim her shots right.

The only attack spell she knows is a simple fireball. She’s really good at it for not having been able to practice on the ship, though, so she finds herself flinging flames at the demons all around almost more than she puts bullets through their heads. No one expects someone who’s half fish to know anything about fire; many of her foes go down with shock on their identical ugly faces.

Taking a moment to catch her breath while Herdley watches her six, she takes stock of who’s left. Tella is dueling some beast with four arms, four scimitars against her one desperate cutlass. Pan’s doing alright - he’s found a horse, probably belonging to a dead Yela Aloran judging by the colors it’s wearing. Herdley has tear-tracks down his face that she suspects don’t have anything to do with the long shallow cut on his leg. She can’t see Don anywhere.

No time to think, no time to worry, no time to mourn. Just act. Just fight.

With a war-cry to match the screams of demons and draken all around, Mina leaps back into the fray. As a Defender First Class, as a proud Isi, as a pirate, as a godsdamned hothead who’d rather take demon claws to the gills than let a friend die without her, she’ll fight to the bitter end.

Grey had finally found some sort of hidden cave-thing in this opal city. The entrance was hidden behind a lot of vine-things, so for now he was all alone. Good. It also had a flat surface. Better.

For now, Grey was practicing walking. These new legs were messing them up a lot, but at least they didn’t seem to be taking too much blunt damage thanks to their scales.

They decide to check their phone, and blink upon seeing the message they’d apparently sent Mina. And the response. Hm. [Text]: Mina! Yes, I’m alive. And somewhere in an opal-obsessed city. As a giant lizard-thing. This city seems inhabited by mer-people?? And someone threw a fish at me. I’m in an underwater cave. I swam here. Walking is hard. Are you here as well??

Everything is getting sore. They’re just gonna leave their clawed feet rested in the cool water for now, lightly flexing their toes and weird extra leg bits to try and get them to relax.

Mina, on a touch of “shore leave” (read: ocean leave) while her ship’s in port, has been swimming around, discovering to her immense relief that someone has seen fit to magically waterproof her phone. Having a fish tail underwater was...really weird at first, but now it’s just a ton of fun. She’s been snapping pictures of every neat fish that swims her way.

And then she gets the text, and shrieks a little, because apparently the gods are much kinder than she thought.

She only knows of one cave with an underwater entrance but that leaves the water inside, so she swims there at full clip, which is a good deal faster than she can run on land now. Upon spotting a pair of clawed feet in the water - are they half brown iguana or something?? - she pokes her head out of the water, ear fins perking in excitement.

“Grey!! Praise Inti, I seriously thought - ...wow, you’re not joking about the lizard thing, huh?”

Name: Mina tan Minora

Age: 21

Race: merfolk

Alignment: Opalarian Empire (specifically the Thieves’ Guild)

Appearance: In humanoid form, not much has changed for Mina, apart from translucent scales all over her body, webbed fingers, spiky orange fins on her ears and forearms, and closed (but still visible) gill slits on the sides of her neck and torso. As a mermaid, she has a short but powerful tail, dark green mottled with brown like many real-life fish, with the actual tail fin parts also being orange. Her gills are much more obvious underwater.

ABILITIES

Retained: while completely submerged in seawater, normal vision and hearing and unbothered by chilly water (though dangerously cold water is still dangerous)

Racial Traits: water breathing, swims a lot faster than a human, can shapeshift into a humanoid form on land

Spells: Fire, Light, Water Walking. Mina isn’t much of a caster, preferring to use her shotgun or her fists for any fighting she needs to do; Light is the only spell she uses on a regular basis, since it gets really dark in the deep ocean and her eyes work no better in the dark than a human’s. Her Light spell appears like firelight coming from nowhere. She’d like to learn Invisibility, but can’t get the hang of it yet.

OTHER

Mina captains a small pirate sloop called the Seshaiatla (Seshaia’s Grace in Isian), and her five or six crewmen. They’re all affiliated with the Opalarian Thieves’ Guild, paying a small portion of their spoils to the guild in exchange for some amount of protection from competition and backstabbing. They do almost all of their raiding in tandem with other guild ships, since the Seshaiatla is too small to take down much on her own, save perhaps a civilian fishing boat (and Mina is far from interested in stealing from the poor).

She was mourning them. She was so certain that whatever divine protection was making her glow and phase through fireballs, it would leave an Agent of the One Concern to die in the dust, for a given value of “die” when it came to Agents. She was so certain Inti would ignore them, would let them die as many times as they could stand, that she does a massive double take when their evident butt-text comes in.

Of course, anything could have happened. An unintentional text - they could be lying there, dying and healing and dying again, over and over, on top of their phone by coincidence.

10:00PM EST, MAY 30th

Very little remained of the city two hours in. What was destroyed was consumed by the voice, NPCs and wildlife torn away by the wind to become one with the hole. All that remained on the ground, feet planted firmly despite it all, were the outsiders. Bodies alight with a radiant glow, they seemed otherwise unaffected by the destruction all around them. 

TAKE THIS… BLESSING… THERE IS… AN EVIL…                  DEFEAT… IT MUST BE… DEFEATED…                              IN ONE HOUR… PREPARE TO DEFEND                                               …LAST LINE OF DEFENSE…

The voice echoed in the minds of everyone still present even as the city center, the last standing bastion, threatened to be consumed by the forces that had uprooted the rest. The surrounding area was little more than a barren wasteland now. All of those remaining were teleported by this voice to the center, around the hole. Depending on the listener the voice sounded different. It was familiar. The voice of the most important person to them. It sought to bring reassurance.

IT HAS… ARRIVED… FIGHT… CHAMPIONS…

And from the hole a pair of eyes did glow. They were almost comedic in design, although eerily vacant. The power they exuded could not go unnoticed nor disregarded. It was an existence that surpassed even the strongest, most broken powers in Spirale.

And it let out a terrifying shriek that would send everyone to their knees. An hour remained to put aside differences, to plan a coordinated strike.

{ Here it is, at long last: MINA’S PERMANENT RELATIONSHIP AD! By liking this post, you give me permission to:

-stick Mina randomly in your askbox -tag you in random starters -IM you regarding relationship plotting -spam you with memes (nothing too egregious of course!)

There’s several levels of relationship you can have with her:

1. ACQUAINTANCES. Mina tends to have a lot of these, and it doesn’t take much to get into this kind of relationship with her - maybe running into her a few times in training, at the beach, or on the street. If you’re a member of the Diamond Battalion, or a fellow founder of the Dancing Dragon guild house (coming soon!), you’re probably at this level automatically. She’s gotten over her “assume everyone wants to kill you until proven otherwise” mindset.

2. FRIENDS. This one’s a bit harder. While knowing people comes easily to Mina, trusting them does not, so it takes a little more commitment to really get her to open up. A pretty surefire way to become her friend is to save her butt in some respect, but as opportunities to do this are rare outside of catastrophic events, owing her something and getting her to owe you something will also do the trick. If she feels like she’s closer with you than just a casual acquaintance, she will likely state that explicitly to you on some occasion.

3. CRUSH, ETC. This will very probably be one-sided on Mina’s part. She’s a disaster lesbian and can get weak-kneed and starry-eyed about pretty much any attractive woman around her age (early 20s). She does have a girlfriend back home, though, so don’t expect her to commit to any relationship. Friends with benefits might happen, though that would take a very special case and a lot of IM plotting, as I don’t RP sex scenes, period.

4. RIVALS. A friendly rivalry is easier to get into with Mina than an actual friendship. If you challenge something such as her swimming ability, her hand-to-hand skills, or her propensity for fucking things up, she will absolutely take the dare, no matter who you are. She’s reckless like that. Such rivalries don’t imply any actual ill will on her part; as long as you’re civil, she’ll treat you the same way, no hard feelings. As soon as you’re ready to throw down, though, she is too. Don’t take it personally.

5. ENEMIES. Difficult, unless you’re actively hostile to her on multiple occasions, or show affiliation with the One Concern from her home universe (and you’re not Agent Grey). Mina is a chaotic good through and through. She doesn’t go around hating people for no reason. You’d have to do something really bad to get active enmity from her, and even then, she’s still capable of forgiveness in some measure. This would have to be highly plotted, but it’s an interesting possibility…

6. FOUND FAMILY. This one is probably hardest to do out of all of these, but will ultimately be the most rewarding for both parties. Mina grew up with a profound lack of family in a society where family meant everything. Her dad left before she was born; her mom, who raised her, was…not the best at parenting, and was not born Isi, so Mina has no Isi ancestry to speak of. She has no biological siblings. She’s a pretty lonely person, so if you manage to build a relationship with her enough that she considers you a family figure, it’ll be for the best: for her and her subpar emotional health, and for you, because you’ll have a friend and protector for life.

7. ANYTHING ELSE. Want to be Mina’s sparring partner? Teacher? Student? Theft victim? One-night stand? Anything you can think of, I’m probably open to it. Hit me up in IMs or askbox, and we can figure something out! }
