“Yeah? Since when was that a bad thing? You don’t commit to any of your fuckbuddies. At least mine are distinguished.” Piper shot back with a roll of her eyes, trying to ignore the sinking realization that he was right. They were married. And as much as they said they care about her, she was always going to be number two. She couldn’t ruin their jobs or their reputations. Some of them were even fathers. They’d never leave their wives for some girl half their age and leave the rest of their lives behind. She was basically their little toy that they manipulated to keep her were she was and she was stupid enough to stay.
But at least she felt wanted. Even though she secretly knew they didn’t truly care about her, she still couldn’t leave and be alone. She needed at least the illusion that she was needed.
But at his next words, she gave him a deadpanned glare and kicked her foot, sole first, at his knee. “You didn’t need to say it, asshole. I know guys like you. You have to be fucking asked to get us off. So, saying you would isn’t the same as doing it unprompted. So fuck off.” She warned sharply, probably acting too defensive for a joke. But she could never shake the feeling that he might mean it and take her jokingly taking him up on the offer as a yes. Which, as nice as it sounded, was not a complication she wanted to deal with right this moment.
“Listen, it’s not like I’d keep it anyways.” She countered, her tone sharp and obviously warning him not to ask anymore questions. She’d been a bit of a standard in most of their lives long enough that she trusted them when they said they didn’t need protection on his end anymore. She trusted her own birth control to do it’s job and in the event of an emergency; she knew she’d figure out something. All she knew was she couldn’t keep it. She wasn’t in a spot financially or mentally to support a kid. And after watching her parents screw it up for eighteen years didn’t exactly inspire her confidence.
“You know what? You’re crashing my perfectly nice, quiet evening. So I highly suggest you stop harassing me before I kick you out of my apartment, which you seem to continually confuse as your own.”
Flynn didn't bother arguing with her. A tiny part felt guilty for being so nasty about it, but he had a point. He hated to think that at the end of the day this wonderful, beautiful girl was alone. She deserved to be loved and cared for. He wasn't the person to do it, but he thought everyone deserved that kind of shit especially when they were nice enough to let a practically homeless man live on their couch. There were sometimes, in the dead of the night when the rest of the world was asleep, that Flynn thought about being that person. He thought if he could change, get a stable job, put furniture in the room he rented long ago but never stayed in, that maybe he could be stable enough to care for her. But those thoughts were fleeting. Fear rippled through his body as if hail pelted a murky river.
He hid his thoughts with a grin retracting as she kicked him away. He chuckled and tossed up his hands. "C'mon Piper," He rolled his eyes lightheartedly as he smiled. "You have no clue what I'm like in bed or not. My rap sheet may include petty theft, but I can assure you I have a lot to give." He winked with the end of the line.
The conversation began to run down a road Flynn didn't want to deal with and he doubted that Piper wanted anything to do with it either. They weren't the kind of people who were meant for kids. Suburbia, white picket fences, no. They thrived on city life and living paycheck to paycheck. Trying to kill that part of the conversation, Flynn shrugged keeping his actions non-committal and lighthearted. "You have nothing to worry about I'm sure. Those guys you fuck are probably all dried up anyways."
Flynn held her hand gently removing it from his chest as his fingers massaged her palm. "Oh c'mon, Piper, I'm just fucking around. I promise I'll be good." He batted his eyelashes at her. "Let me stay. I'll get up and get you a beer."
