The Future of eVoting in India
The concept of eVoting is worldwide known. A technology-based voting system that helps to create and manage elections where the voters can cast their votes by using a mobile or electronic device connected to the internet. The process is less confusing than ballot voting and the voters don’t even have to get out of their houses to cast their votes. The system runs through software that is programmed to create personalized elections for not only governments but also for various corporate companies, NGOs, clubs, etc. It will not only save time but also a lot of election expenses can be reduced through mobile voting.
The concept of eVoting in India:
India being a democratic country has always shown importance to its assembly elections. From the beginning of this century, India has put a lot of faith in EVMs (Electronic Voting Machine) for its state and central assembly elections. In the case of corporate and other private elections, the medium has always been ballot voting. But after the pandemic situation, everything around us changed drastically. As social distancing became a matter of concern, the government of India started to look for an alternative. Here came the idea of online elections. As the process is less time taking and would save a lot of expenses during these tough times, many small or large-scale industries have already started adapting online mediums of voting in their elections. The state and central governments have still not adopted the idea, but it is possible that within a few years, India completely started using eVoting for all of its governmental elections.
The acceptance of online elections in the future:
Most corporate organizations have been rethinking their election procedures for the last few years. After the COVID pandemic, the need for an alternative grew stronger. Even for the governments, eVoting can produce far more reliable, private, and secured elections without spending a lot of money. The entire election as well as campaigning process can happen online and can be completed within a few days. But there are still a few steps that need to be cleared before making online elections a reality in India.
The ignorance of the voters:
India is a developing country and a certain percentage of the people who cast their votes are ignorant about adopting new technology. As they’re still unaware of the internet, it will be a huge task for the governments to technologically educate them to adopt an entirely different idea.
The problem with the internet:
Though India is moving towards digitalization, there are many places in India where the internet hasn’t reached yet. The state and central governments need to work on their policies related to the internet and should reach every corner of the country. Easy access to free internet can pave the way for online elections.
Election policies of the governments:
Before implementing eVoting, the Indian government should revise its various election policies. As online elections will open new dimensions for Indian politics, the policies need to be revised and updated to ease up the process.
Though it is a distant dream, the online method of elections is inevitable within the next few years. The future of eVoting in India is bright and it can change the ways how elections have been created and managed before.
