Sarah smiled. “That’s all I want the info for. Self defense if I can’t get a hold of you. I’m new to this Supernatural exists business.” she said laughing. She turned a little red. But smiled. “Well I’m glad I can have that talk with you. Because if you can’t have such an awkward talk with your parents then who can you?”

She was glad to have him. “I’m sure Zack’s mom would appreciate I came prepared. She always is telling us she’s not ready for us to have sex but she’s not st stupid. She knows kids will if they want to. And she doesn’t want to be a grandma yet.So use protection.” She shook her head. “I tell her accidents happen even with protection. The only 100% way to avoid that is don’t have sex. So if an accident happens with it don’t yell at me.” She smiled. “His mom said accidents with protection should never be held against a person. It’s the idiots who don’t use it and wonder how they got into that situation that should be called out.”

Sarah smiled again. “That’s mostly why I haven’t with him yet. It be just my luck I’d still get pregnant even with it. Not ready to be a mom or to give you or mom grey hairs.”

“Well, she’s smart for telling you that.” Dean laughed a bit and crossed his arms on the table. “I’ll give you condoms when you’re ready. Nothing bad with a good awkward talk.” A smirk spread across his face. 

“I’d rather not be a grandfather just yet.” His smirk turned to a smile and he looked outside for a moment. “Will I be able to meet this Zack?” HE questioned curiously and looked back at Sarah.

Sarah was happy. “Yes I’d like a room. It’d make me feel normal. I mean  it’s my dad’s house. In a way.”  She wanted to make this work. “Oh and I have no desire to become a hunter but uh just in case monsters come to me or mom maybe you should teach me some basics. So I can defend myself.” She smiled. “I mean I could call you obviously if I am in trouble like you said. But what if you can’t come to the phone and or make it on time. You’d try but sometimes things happen right? so I’d just like to be a little prepared and not be taken off guard if that happens.”

“Okay sounds reasonable. I have a calendar with all those things. I’ll send it to you.” she smiled when he mentioned boy advice. Then cringed. “Well I’ve been in love with Zack since I was five. We pretty much been together since we were kids. I never really needed much advice except in on area. And not ready for that embarrassing conversation.” she laughed.

“See I’m a virgin. He’s not I mean at some point he did date someone else as a teenager before we actually became a couple when we grew up. Not for long though. She dumped him because he was still in love with me.” she shook her head. “And you don’t have to worry about me calling you up crying because he’s pressuring me to do it with him. He never would do that. I just mean when I am ready to lose it I be clueless on that subject. And I certainly wouldn’t want to go to you.” she said. “Unless I can go to you for anything. And talk about everything. Including that and it not be the worst thing of my life.”

“Well I can teach you a little bit. Just for self defense but I really don’t want you getting into the business. So I’m happy you don’t want anything to do with it.” Dean spoke calmly and smiled a bit as he looked into his daughters eyes.

“I guess I’ll have to give you a small talk when you’re ready and give ya some condoms when you’re ready.” He chuckled a bit and rubbed the back of his neck. It was a little awkward since he hadn’t really had to talk about it for a long time since Sam got the talk ages ago. “Really though when you’re ready to give it up talk to me. Call me, whatever.”

Sarah smiled. “Okay I promise not to wreck her.” she said. their food came. Since it was free Sarah got a salad and a burger with fries. She ate it all too. She watched her dad. “Well  you do have a house technically. Sam told me about your bunker. I could visit you too sometime. It’s not unheard of for a kid to visit the parent they don’t live with. He said there were lots of bedrooms in it. Save me one. I’d be pretty dang safe from any monster in that thing.”

She smiled. “So does making time for me include trying to make it to my Hockey games. Art shows. School plays?” she said.

Dean ate his food since it was free. That wasn’t something he got much. “Yeah we have the Bunker. I can save a room for you if that’s what you really want. There’s plenty of room in there anyway.” He responded and smiled.

“Yeah. I’ll do my best to make it to those. If something comes up I’ll let you know ahead of time so you’re not completely disappointed in me.” He spoke calmly and pulled a pen from his pocket. He took a napkin and wrote his number down for her. “I want you to know it’s okay to call me if you’re in any form of trouble. Even if it’s boy trouble. I’ll listen and give bad dad advice.”

Alex smiled. “Look she only has a learner’s permit. She can’t drive without you in the car. It’s not like she’s gonna take her on a high speed car chase. She’ll listen to you. You’re teaching her to drive.” he said. Then he left.

Sarah came back out feeling bad. “I’m sorry for being mean to  you earlier. but you didn’t sound too promising when offering to be in my life. I just wanted to tell you I want a dad is all.”

“I think I get that now. It may have taken me longer than you had hope but I understand it now.” Dean responded with a smile on his face. He wanted his dad to be around all the time too but the moments he was around were special to him none the less. 

“I’ll teach you to drive. After we get some food in our stomachs. Alright?” He relaxed back in the chair and looked up at her. “I meant it when I said I would try to visit more often. Its not like your mom would have you come visit me anyway. Especially if I’m on a hunt. I’ll make time for you.”

Alex understood now. “Dean you ever think you’re going about this the wrong way.”  he knew what Dean’s intentions were. “When you first met her you more or less said you didn’t want her in your life because she didn’t fit into it as long as you hunted. ” He knew that wasn’t exactly what  Dean said. But the way Dean said it probably sounded like that to Sarah.

“Okay so  you probably didn’t say those exact words but she summarized the gist of what you said to her. And that’s exactly how it sounded to her.”  Alex thought Dean was an idiot. “How would you feel if you were a fifteen year old kid who never knew their real father. who was stuck with a guy like James for a dad. And all of a sudden you meet your real dad and he tells you first thing he can’t be in your life.”

Alex shook his head. “Fifteen year old’s don’t get that. she’s a kid. she wants her daddy. Every other girl she knows gets that. And all she gets is maybe I can try to visit more but I’m not father material.” There was a story he decided to tell Dean so he understood.

“Dean let me tell you something about Sarah. All she’s ever wanted her whole fifteen years in this world is a dad. Not just a dad .Because she has that with James technically. But a dad she’s closed to. A dad she can say she loves.”   

Alex continued. “There’s this boy named Aiden who lives up the street from Sarah. She probably introduce you to him when she was introducing you to everyone.”  Alex figured Sarah would be angry for him telling Dean but Dean needed to hear it.

“Well Aiden hates cars. Knows nothing about them. Has about as much interest in them as Sarah does. His dad owns a shop where he works on cars all day. Aiden used to go to his dad’s shop when he was out of school and help fix the cars.”  he said. “Aiden’s dad never made him. Aiden just did it. Sarah saw him come home all those times with dirty hands. She asked him why he helped work on the cars if he didn’t enjoy them. Aiden told Sarah that it was because he was doing it with his dad. That he was close to his dad and it was fun when it was with his dad.”

Alex remembered Sarah’s jealousy. “Aiden’s dad had a sixties mustang. He was very proud of and never let anyone drive. Protective of it.  Well one day Aiden asked his dad to teach him to drive in it. His dad did. Sarah saw Aiden driving up and down the street with his dad. And he looked happy. So Sarah asked his dad why he let AIden drive. He never let anyone drive.”   This was the most  upsetting part of the story. “His dad said because this used to be my dad’s and my dad taught me to drive in it. And one day I’ll give it to AIden and he’ll teach his kids to drive in it.”

It amazed Alex that Dean didn’t get it. “She came to my house in tears  that day. I asked her why. She told me the story. And she said she liked that idea. A family car past down to her to teach her kids to drive in.” Alex smiled. “She told me she deserved that right of passage like every other kid. Regardless of how she felt about cars. And that she deserved a dad to teach her about cars and that she’d listen just because it was her dad.”  Alex looked at Dean. “She wants what Aiden has with his dad. She doesn’t care about learning to drive in a cool car  Dean. She just knows that her grandfather owned that car before you. And that you learned to drive in it. She just knows that it’s her dad’s car and that’s something special to her.”

Dean listened intently to his story and understood why she was upset. It was almost the same deal with Sam. Teaching him how to fix cars just in case one day he wasn’t around anymore and the car became his. 

“Wish I would have seen that sooner.” Dean sighed and looked towards the bathroom. “It’s gonna kill me not being in control of the car but I’ll teach her how to drive in it. I know that’s what my dad would have wanted me to do with her.” He responded and waited for Sarah’s return.

He knew John would be upset with him for not seeing what she truly wanted and not allowing her to drive the impala. After all it really was a family car and she was a Winchester.

Sarah shook her head. “I don’t give a shit if you have money.” she said. She was upset now he’d say that. “You think I care that you can’t buy a mansion to give me a huge room to live in?” she couldn’t believe that. “The comparison had nothing to do with money and you know it.” she said.

She wondered if he really was trying. “You’re trying?   Well your best is one weekend to get to know me.  And then tell me you’d try to visit. When exactly will you fit me into your life?” she wanted him to see it. “When you don’t even think I can fit into it.” she hated speaking the truth. But he said the words earlier when she found him. Not her.

Sarah didn’t feel like answering him. It’d might make him feel worse. And she didn’t mean to make him feel bad. “No. It’s fine. I am okay.” she said. She got  up. “I’m going to the bathroom.” she said walking away towards the ladies room. That’s when Alex her friend came by. He had heard the whole thing. Didn’t think Sarah was being too fair to Dean.

But he also felt Dean wasn’t being fair to Sarah either. “You two are being incredibly unfair to each other. You know that Dean.” So Alex figured he’d try to fix it. “So what happened earlier?” he asked.

Dean knew he was wrong in what he said and it slowly ate at him. He sighed and rubbed his face with his right hand. “She asked me if I could teach her to drive before we even came inside. Then she got seemed to be upset when I told her it wasn’t a good idea.” He sighed and lowered his head a bit rubbing at the back of his neck. 

“Then when I ask why she’s upset she didn’t respond which I half expected since I thought the comparison was about money and not the actual father daughter relationship thing. I thought wrong. I think all of this was just a bad idea.” His tone was low and he looked up at Alex. 

Dean had a feeling things would go south and he really didn’t want her to get involved in hunting either. He wanted her to have some normal life. Something he could never have. The moment he even had a chance of being normal it was always taken away from him by something supernatural. He didn’t want to see that happen again.

Sarah looked at him. He just didn’t get it. Visit her? “Oh right visit me. It’s just like I’m some weird third cousin you never get to see.” she said. The wording of that bothered her. And she didn’t know why because lots of kids had separated parents. And those kids ‘visited‘ the parent they didn’t live with. So it wasn’t uncommon.

But given what he said earlier about not wanting to be around too often to protect her. That he wasn’t father material. Well those visits didn’t sound too fun. “You know there’s a kid in my school whose dad is a rich business man. who is always out of town. she almost has to make an appointment to see him.” Sarah knew it was unfair to compare the two.  But she was still hurt.

And just didn’t get why it would seem like an unheard of concept that his daughter would want to learn to drive from her daddy in the same car he learned in. How could Dean not see the significance that car being a ‘family’ car held for her.

“Okay what did I say to you early that hurt your feelings so much? I’m willing to try here and now you’re the one shoving me into a corner. Sure I may not be rich and have a ton of money to just buy a new car if mine gets damaged or buy you everything you could ever want.” Dean was now a little peeved that she would compare him to other people like that. Maybe he shouldn’t have spoke his mind just then either but it was already too late to take his words back.

“Is there something you really want from me that I’m not seeing or something?” He took a stab in the dark asking her this. He didn’t think she would even answer him after what he said prior.

Sarah nodded and went inside waiting for him to follow. She saw her mom and waved. Natalie waved back. She got the two a seat. The waitress Emily came by their table. “Emily this is my real  dad. You think I could get his meal free too?” she asked using Dean’s biological title to help him out. Even though he wouldn’t be dad much after this. “Will we be seeing a lot of him?”  Sarah shrugged. “Probably not but do we have to tell the owner that.” Emily frowned. “Why are you so cynical Sarah.” Sarah shook her head. “Ask him.” she said. Emily just left without getting into it.

When Emily came back she told Dean he could have anything he wanted for free. And then Sarah sat there not sure what to say.

Dean ordered his usual. A Juicy burger with bacon and extra onions. He wasn’t sure what to talk about with Sarah but he was going to have to think of something. 

“You know if you want me to visit you more I can or I can at least try.” He offered and looked into his daughters eyes. It still bugged him that he hurt her feelings. It was something he would eventually learn later on. Besides he was still going to have to get use to the fact that he had a daughter.

Sarah sort of expected as much. But wished she could tell him why it meant so much to her. She knew the car was his dad’s and he probably learned in it. “that’s okay….” she said. She tried to hide how sad that made her but her tone wouldn’t let her. So she tried hiding her tone. And changed the subject. “Mom can teach me in her mini van.” she said. She decided she was hungry. “Let’s go inside instead of waiting for mom to get off out here. I’m kind of hungry and the owner gives me free food for being mom’s kid.” she said smiling. But it was sort of a fake smile.

Dean could hear the tone in her voice. He knew he upset her by denying her. He didn’t understand why she was so upset by it either. He wanted to ask what was wrong but she changed the subject rather quickly for him to even bring it back up.

“Seems like ya got a lucky break by getting free food.” He chuckled a bit to lighten the mood. It didn’t seem to work though. “If you’re hungry we can go inside.” He really wanted to know why she was upset by his answer but he didn’t think he was going to be able to get an answer out of her.

Sarah found an old picture of her mom with Dean Winchester.  The date on it was exactly nine months before her birthdate.  Sarah confronted her mom about it. And then all the truths came out. Truths about hunting. Truths about why Natalie lied. Truths about everything. Seemed everyone knew all these things but her. So she went looking for Dean. Her friend Alex helped find him.  When Sarah found him it wasn’t what she expected.

He told her if she knew about his job now  she’d be grateful for her mom not telling her who he was. For not telling him she was pregnant. For keeping her from all the monsters in his life. He told her he wasn’t father material with the life he had. He told her she was better off without him in it more or less. He told her all the things a kid without a decent dad didn’t want to hear. Her heart was crushed.

Her uncle Sam was a little more understanding of her side or so that’s how Sarah took it. Sam had told Dean to be nicer. That no kid meeting their father for the first time wants to hear that.  So Dean promised he’d spend the weekend with her and get to know her before he took off. Sam knowing that wasn’t enough for Sarah gave Sarah his phone number and whispered if he doesn’t change his mind call me any time you need an Uncle.

Sarah was grateful for that. Sarah introduced Dean to her best friends. Showed him her school. Introduced him to her boyfriend. A kid she’s been technically with since five. She introduced him to the grocery store owner. The bowling alley owner. It was a small town . She wanted to show him off before he left and she never saw him again.

They were sitting outside  the diner her mom worked at. And she had an important question to ask Dean. She didn’t think he’d get the significance of it.  But she thought she’d try. “Would you teach me to drive in your car?” she asked.

Dean was taken aback when she asked and grew a bit defensive over baby. “I don’t think that’s a good idea Sarah.” He responded in an almost stern tone, yet still trying to be nice since Sam had told him to be a little nicer to her. 

He didn’t like the idea of a young teen driving baby around. Especially since he’s seen the way some teens drive. He would like to think she wouldn’t be reckless with driving her but he also didn’t catch on to the hidden meaning behind the question. All he heard was, “teach me to drive in your car.” instead of “I’d like to have a relationship with you.”
