“No, they were cute. I would have appreciated them but I just assumed they were from you-know-who.” he said not wanting to keep bringing Blaine into the conversation. Kurt was through with letting him be such a strong person in his life. And he felt bad enough about having to reject Dave, they had become such good friends he didn’t want to end that. “Of course. You’re one of my only real friends. You can’t get rid of me so easily.” He said and returned the squeeze with a smile.
Dave laughed quietly and smiled. “Good. I wouldn’t want to,” he said. “I guess I should get going before I get kicked out of here for crashing,” he said. Suddenly the fake decorations and everything scattered around that had comforted him before were now beginning to disgust him, and he needed to leave. “You should stay and have fun with your friends. But if you get bored or Blaine shows up, you’re always welcome over at my house,” he told him before standing up out of the booth.
“Oh my god, you were the one sending all those gifts this week.Dave…I had no idea.” Kurt said, he was still trying to process everything. He still in the mindset that Blaine was the one doing all this and to know that it was Dave..it changed everything. They all suddenly meant something and there was an instant regret for all those gifts he threw away. “I feel so bad for throwing those cards into the garbage now.” He said then looked at his friends hand on the table and took it. “I thought that Blaine sent me all those things, which was really stupid of me since all the gifts were really thoughtful…Dave, you’ve been a really good friend to me for a while and I’d be lying if I didn’t say I didn’t have some feeling for you too…but I don’t think I’m ready for a relationship right now.”
It hurt a little that Kurt had thrown away his gifts, but he understood. “It’s okay. Most of them were really cheesy,” he said dismissively. He looked at their hands and somehow, that made up for a little bit of the rejection he was being given. Dave forced a smile and nodded. At least he was lettting him down easy. “I understand. I know you’ll be leaving Ohio soon and I just had to tell you before I did something impulsive and pushed you away farther,” he said. “We’ll still be friends, right? I hope you don’t feel weird about this because it doesn’t change anything for me,” he rambled, giving Kurt’s hand a soft squeeze before pulling it away. Dave’s chest hurt and rudely intrusive thoughts of self pity were slipping into his mind, but he just swallowed hard and kept smiling at him.
Kurt laughed when Dave said there was no one else, “Then how did you get in here?” he asked but let the other boy continue as he listened. He furrowed his brows, wondering what was going on as he took the candy box and read the note. He felt his face go red as he looked up at Dave. “You… actually have feelings for me?” He asked, it might have been a stupid question but he never thought Dave actually liked him that way when he kissed Kurt or even the second time when he tried to. It just all felt like the spur of the moment to which Kurt never gave it to much thought.
“The party doesn’t start until later, technically. That’s why I invited you here so early,” he explained. Dave watched Kurt read and tried to read what he was feeling from his face. Dave took a deep breath and exhaled before saying “Yes, I do. I've had a little crush on you since last year but I thought that was just me projecting what I was trying to figure out on you, but with us being friends and everything these last few months.... I know they’re real,” he said, staring up at Kurt.
Kurt was not looking forward to tonight. After all the gifts that he was sure were from Blaine, he knew that the night would not end well. Sure, he missed his ex. It was hard when the boy was his best friend and the two had gotten so close…but Kurt had to remind himself that it didn’t make up for the fact that Blaine had been horrible to him the last few weeks before he ended it. He had to put Blaine’s fantasy of them back together to an end. As the hostess lead Kurt to the table, he noticed Dave and stepped forward with a grin on his face and let the hostess know that he was going to talk to his friend first. It looked like she was going to say something but decided against it as Kurt sat down with Dave. “Oh my god, Dave! I didn’t know Sugar invited you.” He said scooting in more then looking around the restaurant to see if Blaine had arrived yet. “Honestly. I’m glad there’s someone here I know besides the glee club. I think Blaine is going to show up any minute and I know I’m going to need someone to get out of here with…” It suddenly hit Kurt that there was one rule to Sugar’s party…No single people allowed. Even though Kurt knew he should be happy, he felt weirdly sad. “Oh. You’re probably here with someone, aren’t you? I don’t meant that in a bad way. I’m happy for you.” He said as he forced a smile, “is he here yet? Do I get to meet him?”
Dave wanted to interrupt Kurt, but his mouth wouldn’t let any words out despite their efforts while Kurt went on. He just forced his lips into a weak smile until Kurt stopped. “There’s... no one else,” he said, shaking his head. “And... Blaine’s not coming. Well, he might be for the party but I planned on being gone before that,” he said. Dave looked down and grabbed a box of candy with a card attached that read ‘Kurt, I think I love you. Love, David.’ Dave held his breath while Kurt read the note.
Today was the big day. In a short while, Dave wouldn’t be able to hide behind a gorilla mask anymore. Dave knew the move he’d made on Kurt a few months ago was out of line. Him and Blaine had just broken up and they’d barely reconnected even as friends. He’d been confused and took it out on Kurt, again, but this time was different. He knew how he felt about Kurt. Their close friendship over the last few months told him that, and he had to tell him. He couldn’t stay friends with him and not tell him, it was unfair to them both. And Dave was ready for if Kurt said no, but he didn’t want to think about that now, as he sat at an empty booth towards the back corner of Breadstix. There were heart streamers and other decorations just littering the place. It made Dave feel hopeful, like maybe real love was in the air. Dave had forgone the whole gorilla getup, and only had the mask sitting beside him that he’d been fidgeting with all night. He only let it go when he caught a glimpse of Kurt walking through the door, talking to the hostess and being lead back to Dave’s table.
What: After Kurt and Blaine break up, Kurt comes over for comfort. Dave misreads the situation.
Where: Dave’s house.
Kurt didn’t know who else to go to. He could have called Rachel or Mercedes but he didn’t really think that they would understand, instead he was standing in front of Dave’s door just shaking with anger, confusion, and frustration before knocking at the door.
Dave came down the stairs and opened the door. He was slightly worried after what Kurt had texted him. “Hey,” he said to Kurt, stepping aside so he could come in. “Is everything okay?”
Kurt walked in and tried to keep calm before a sob escaped him and he quickly shook his head as he finally started to cry. “No.” He said, “Blaine and I broke up.”
Dave “Oh my god.” Dave frowned and reached out to give Kurt a light hug, not wanting to make him uncomfortable. “I’m so sorry, Kurt. What happened?”
Kurt stayed in the hug for a second before wrapping his own arms around Dave and holding onto him tighter as he tried not to lose it. At that moment, he felt so embaressed that he almost didn’t want to say but he knew that Dave wouldn’t make him feel stupid and he knew that he wouldn’t try to justify what Blaine did either…which is why he didn’t go to Rachel in the first place. “Blaine cheated on me.” he said through shaky voice. “He told me that he slept with Sebastian.”
Dave tensed up with anger when Kurt told him what happened. “Are you kidding me?” he asked, looking down at Kurt.
Kurt shook his head, “I knew there was something going on. God, I’m such an idiot.” he said then wiping his eyes with the sleeve of his shirt. “I’m sorry I came here to you like. I just couldn’t go to Rachel and you’re the only person I can talk to without feeling annoyed.”
Dave “It’s not your fault,” he said. “He shouldn’t have done that to you,” he said. “But don’t be sorry. You’re always welcome here,” he said. “I promise.”
Kurt smiled slightly as he tried to calm himself, “Thanks, Dave.” He said once he could form words properly. “I apperciate it. I really do.”
Dave gave him another light, quick hug. “Any time. Do you want to come to my room and talk? Not in a weird way, I promise,” he said. “Or if you want something to drink or anything just let me know. Whatever you want,” he rambled slightly.
Kurt felt a little weird hugging Dave, since he had been so used to anything but kind gestures exhanged before but he’d be lying if he didn’t say that Dave was a good hugger. Just being held by him made Kurt feel more at ease and safe. He nodded with a chuckle, “I figured as much. But yeah, that sounds like a good idea.” he told him
Dave smiled at him and lead him to his bedroom. “Make yourself at home,” he said, sitting on the edge of his bed, fidgeting slightly.
Kurt sat next to him and took a breath as he looked around the room. “You have such a boy room.” He told him, trying to keep his voice light. “It’s a lot like Finns.”
Dave glanced at him and laughed. “I bet. Football players are pretty basic,” he said. “I haven’t had a friend in here since like, middle school. Sorry it looks a little less presentable,” he said.
Kurt laughed lightly and shook his head. “It’s fine. I’ve been in plenty of boy’s dirty bedrooms…not like in a weird way.” he added quickly at the end. “I’m just glad you were even free in the first place. I don’t know where I would have gone…I know if I went home then Finn would question me nonstop. Puck and Sam would probably be there too, and they’re a lot closer to Blaine than they are to me so I just did not want to run into them.”
Dave shook his head. “Really, it’s okay. More than okay. You’re welcome here whenever you want and I’m always happy to talk to you, Kurt. I can’t believe he could do something like that to someone as nice as you. It’s really disgusting.”
Kurt “Maybe I should have just have just…you know, after West Side Story like I planned.” he said thinking outloud then realized he let his thoughts escape him and decided to explain himself, “Um, but we sort of got into a fight after so that didn’t really happen.”
Dave “Wait, what? What did you plan? And why did you guys fight again?” he asked, frowning.
Kurt “Um, I thought that after the whole Scandals thing that maybe I should just lose my viginity to him. He seemed to really be affected by it. So I thought maybe after the show, like at his house. Not in my car. But when I got your flowers he just got moody and said he rather go to Breadstix with the others than to his house.” He said feeling his face turn red with embaressment.
Dave stared at him, dumbfounded. “I’m so glad you didn’t do that. He doesn’t deserve you,” he said.
Kurt nodded, feeling like Dave was judging him now. “I know, it was a stupid idea.” he said admittedly, “Maybe…I don’t know. This all feels like something that could have been avoided and I feel so dumb for letting Blaine get this far with it.”“
Dave "You didn’t /let/ him do anything,” Dave said. “He betrayed your trust and it isn’t your fault,” he reminded him, nudging his shoulder softly against Kurt’s.
Kurt looked at Dave for a moment “I just feel like I was sos wrong about everything…Here I thought he was my prince charming coming to rescue me from you but here we are. You’re the real good guy.” he said and gave him a tight smile. “Thanks, Dave.” he said as he leaned slightly on his arm.
Dave smiled at him. “Thanks for thinking of me as the good guy,” he said. He moved his arm around Kurt in a casual position and gave him a little light, half hug.
Kurt “Of course.” He said with a smile. “I wish I had seen that earlier.”
Dave laughed quietly. “Earlier I was sort of the bad guy in the story. So don’t worry about that.”
Kurt “]You were hardly the bad guy, I think you never really were. I think you’re more the character with major devlopment. ” he said nudging him slightly
Dave “I can agree with that,” he smiled and nudged him back. “Thanks, for firgiving me. I wouldn’t be the good guy I am today without it.”
Kurt “Sure. I'mjust glad you were able to forgive yourself.” He said and leaned on Dave slightly. “I’m glad we’re friends now. I needed an unbias person who didn’t have some sort of showchoir suspision at all times.”
Dave wrapped his arm a little more firmly around Kurt. “Me too. I haven’t been making a lot of real friends at my new school. I like having someone to talk to.”
Kurt “What about the football team?” he asked, “I thought like jocks were all bound for life as soon as you like tackled each other into the mud.”
Dave “Well, yeah, they’re cool to hang out with sometimes but I can’t talk to them about… Gay stuff,” he says with a smile.
Kurt raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Gay stuff? Is there any gay stuff you finally have to talk about?”
Dave realized that most of the ‘gay stuff’ he wanted to talk about was just about all the feelings that had been stirred up after meeting Kurt again a few weeks ago. “Um, no, not really,” he laughed. “I guess not. I guess I just feel like I’m not one hundred percent myself around other people.”
Kurt nodded, “Well, if you ever choose to comeout to your football friends then it might make you feel better.” he suggested. “Then again, I don’t really know any of them and how they would react. ”
Dave shrugged. “It’s not that big of a deal. Only a few more months to graduation,” he said, trying to sound optimistic. “Besides, I have new… friends, from Scandals. And you. So I’m really set.”
Kurt “So do you not plan to keep in touch with any of them after you walk the stage?” He asked then smiled. “I’m glad you think we’re more than enough. But I am leaving after graduation…we can still call and text but I just want you to still be able to talk to someone right away after I’m gone.”
Dave “Probably. We’re just not that close,” he said. Dave felt a twinge of sadness when Kurt brought up leaving. “Of course, yeah. I’ll probably be gone too. And I’ll meet new friends wherever I go from here,” he said.
Kurt nodded, “I’m sure you’ll meet a lot of accepting people. But if you meet any guys in college you have to make sure I’m the first person you tell.” he told him jokingly.
Dave laughed. “Totally, I’ll text you all the hot gossip,” he said. “And you have to tell me if you hook up with any cool theater college guys.”
Kurt “Perfect, I thought I was going to be stuck hearing the gossip of the same 4 people.” he laughed, “I’m not sure there will be much hooking up but I’ll let you know if it happens.”
Dave smiled. “You’re up to five now,” he said. “Thanks. And if one of them gets serious, I’ll make sure they’re a good guy.”
Kurt laughed, "Please don’t hurt them. I can’t develop a reputation with an overprotective best friend if I want anyone to date me.”
Dave laughed. “Okay, I’ll only beat up the ones that are serious assholes.”
Kurt “You can keep the fury under lock down for now, I like to think I’m a pretty good judge of character…except um this Blaine thing doesn’t count” He said, getting a bit sad toward the end.
Dave watched him and squeezed his shoulders softly. “We all do stupid things in high school.”
Kurt forced a smile, "Yeah, we do. I'm glad I'm almost done with this part of my life."
Dave nodded a little. "You'll get with better guys. Ones that deserve you," he said, smiling at him.
Kurt "Thanks, Dave. You're really sweet." He said, his smile softening.
Dave looked at Kurt for a few seconds. They were totally having a moment, right? He closed his eyes and started leaning in towards Kurt.
Kurt looked at Dave in confusion when he closed his eyes, what was going on- Oh my god, he thought and quickly leaned back. "Um what are you doing?"
Dave opened his eyes and moved back, frowning. "Shit. I'm so sorry," he said. "I totally misread the situation," he said, staring at him in horror. "I'm sorry."
Kurt "Oh, no. It's... fine." He said awkwardly as he looked towards the door. "I should probably get going though."
Dave looked down. "Right," he said. "Well um, if you ever need anything, I'm here for you," he said.
Kurt nodded with a tight smile, "Thanks, Dave. Um, I'll text you later." He said as he grabbed his bag and walked to the door.
Kurt: That's really sweet Dave...but please don't beat up my boyfriend.
Kurt: That's exactly the one. I think the whole glee club did a really good job and you'll of course see an amazing performance by yours truly. That should be enough incentive.
Dave: Hey, I've learned how to use my words and not just The Fury.
Kurt: Blaine just was really drunk and he sort of tried to convince me to have sex in the back of my car. He got furious when I said no and walked away and now he won't answer his phone.
