Hey Guys! Grace here! This is my writer's blog for fanfiction! My Personal blog for R5 or anything I find interesting is captainrikerlynch :) If you're interested in my regular writing my blog name is graceteschwrites :)
I just wanted to apologize for the lack of activity for the past few months! Work has been absolutely insane! I have a new job as a bartender and I’m basically closing down the bar every single night!
Now with school vastly approaching, I’m worried that I still won’t be able to update my fics as much as I would like.. So fingers crossed that I’ll be able to find the time I need to work on those upcoming chapters that I promised you a while back!
Send me a message or comment which story you would like to see updated first! Or, send me a message asking for an imagine! Imagines are always a nice change of pace and I could probably get those out a little quicker!
Everyone sat in the Lynch’s living room while the boys played some violent video game on their large flat screen hanging on the wall. Ryelee sat on the floor with Rydel, watching the boys play. Ryelee was sitting still while she let Rydel braid her hair into two pig tails. This was going to be one of the last days that they’re going to be able to hang out together before the Lynch’s leave for their vacation. Ryelee was going to miss them terribly. She was hoping that she was going to be able to spend their summer together, but then Rydel sprang her family vacation news on her last minute.
“I really wish I could go with you guys,” Ryelee sighed as one of the boys killed Ryland’s person in their video game. “I’m going to miss you.”
“I think you’ll be fine,” Riker spoke harshly without pealing his eyes away from the TV screen.
Rydel ignored him and said, “Maybe I could speak to my parents about letting you come along. I mean you’re practically family anyways. Besides, I wanted to spend summer with you too.”
“Rydel, I couldn’t ask you to do that,” Ryelee shook her head gently.
Rydel quickly tied the hairband at the end of her braid and jumped up. “You didn’t have to. I’m asking right now.” She scurried out of the room and Ryelee sighed.
“Don’t think for one second that you’re coming with us,” Riker scoffed and then cursed under his breath. He set his controller on the couch beside him as Ryelee looked back at him. Riker grabbed a couple more Red Vines out of the package on his lap and watched Rocky and Ross continue to play.
Ryelee noticed Riker kept stealing glances at her and scoffed, “What?”
Riker’s blank stared changed into a smirk as he said, “Your hair looks stupid like that.”
“Don’t listen to him,” Rocky said. “I like it.”
“Thank you Rocky,” she glared at Riker.
“But seriously, it makes you look like a little school girl,” Riker said giggling a little.
She turned completely around on the floor and looked up at Riker smirking as she said, “Get me a short plaid skirt and a tight white top and I would.”
Riker leaned down, bringing his face right in front of hers smirking, saying, “Well then I would have to teach you a lesson.”
“Pig,” she scoffed as she rolled her eyes. She pushed Riker out of her face and the boys laughed.
Riker started playing with one of Ryelee’s braids as he said, “You brought it on yourself.” She slapped his hand away as Rydel walked back in.
“Good news,” Rydel cheered and sat back on the floor next to Ryelee. “Mom and Dad said you could come with us, you know, if your parents say it’s okay.”
“Great,” Riker scoffed as he grabbed another red vine. Ryelee looked up at him and he scoffed, “A whole month with her.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” she scoffed in return.
“You’re an annoyance,” Riker said with a straight face.
“If anyone is, it’s you,” she said with a straight face and Riker slapped her in the face with his Red Vine. She looked at him shocked and he started laughing. She grabbed his bag of Red Vines off the couch and stood up.
“Give them back,” Riker said sitting up a little more on the couch, getting ready to pounce.
Ryelee pushed what was left out of the wrapping a little and stared at Riker.
“Stop it,” Riker bit.
She quickly licked the tips of each liquorish and everyone started laughing.
Fumed, Riker got up from the couch. Ryelee ran out of the room with the bag and Riker chased after her yelling, “Get back here!” She ran out into the backyard and looked back as Riker tackled her to the ground.
“Ow! Jeez, what the hell is wrong with you,” she yelled as she tried pushing him off. “I’m a girl. Get off!” Riker kept staring at her face, breathing heavily and she looked at him confused as she asked, “What’s your problem?” Ryelee could see Riker fighting with himself on something. Suddenly, Riker grabbed his bag of red vines and ran back inside. She sat up on the grass and looked at the patio door for a while. She stood up and fixed her top as she walked towards the house. She made her way to the living room again and saw Riker had a Red Vine in his mouth as he played Halo and Rydel wasn’t in the room anymore. “Where’s Rydel?” Ryelee asked and they all glanced at her.
“Why do you have grass all over you,” Rocky questioned.
“Because Riker tackled me in the backyard,” Ryelee answered and Riker gave her a glare.
“Dude, that’s not cool,” Ross paused the game to glare at his older brother. “You should apologize.”
“I don’t have to do anything,” Riker sneered and Ryelee looked down at the floor.
“Rye, how did you get grass in your hair,” Rydel came up behind her and she turned around.
Ryelee gave her best friend a small smile and say, “It’s nothing. I’m going to go home and ask my parents about coming with you guys and then I’m going to start packing. They have to say yes.”
“Okay good. Call me later?” Rydel asked and Ryelee nodded her head.
Ryelee quickly escaped the house and walked to her car that was parked on the street. Before she could get in the car, she heard her name being called. She turned and stopped when she saw Rocky jogging towards her. “Yeah, Rocky?”
“I’m really sorry about Riker today,” he spoke, shuffling his feet on the drive way. “I hope you come on our vacation with us.”
“Thanks Rocky,” she tilted her head up to give him a smile. “Riker won’t stop me from having fun with all of you guys. He can sulk if he wants to.”
“Okay good,” he quickly wrapped his arms around her, enveloping her in a hug. “I’ll see you later. Let us know if you want us to pick you up on the way to the airport.”
“Of course,” she nodded before getting into her car. She drove off to her house and pulled into the driveway. She quickly ran inside to talk to her parents.
She found them sitting on the couch in the living room with her older brother, Jake. He was finally home from college for the summer. She was happy to see him, but he always butted his nose in her business.
“Mom, Dad, can I talk to you guys?” she asked and they muted the TV. Jake looked at her as well as she said, “Rydel’s parents asked if I could go on their family vacation this summer and I really want to go.”
“How long?” her mom asked.
“About a month. They rented a house on the beach in the Bahamas. It’s right on the water and it’s so pretty.”
“You’re going on vacation with a bunch of boys,” Jake scoffed, folding his arms over his chest.
“So,” Ryelee scoffed in return. She turned back to her parents, “The house is big. I’ll probably be rooming with Rydel; so I’ll be safe.”
“And their parents will be there?” her mom questioned and Ryelee nodded her head. Her parents looked at each other and then looked back at Ryelee. “Okay. You can go, but you need to behave.”
“And pay for some of your things. I don’t want them having to pay for everything,” her dad answered and Ryelee cheered and quickly hugged both of them.
Ryelee ran up to her bedroom and immediately started packing for her trip. She dialed Rydel’s number and put the phone on speaker, so she could continue to work.
“Can you go?” Rydel questioned without a ‘hello.’
“Yes,” Ryelee cheered and Rydel screeched through the phone.
“We’re going to have so much fun together. We can share a room too.”
“I seriously can’t wait. Rocky mentioned that I should let you know if I needed a ride to the airport and I’ll totally take you up on that.”
“Deal. I’ll let my dad know,” Rydel giggled. “Are you packing already? I’m only half done and I have way too much already.”
“I think I’m going to be following in your shoes, because my huge suitcase is filling up quickly. I’m just not sure what I’m going to want to wear.”
“I have the same problem,” she sighed. “I’m packing all of my bikinis and swimming suits for sure.”
“Agreed.”
They talked all night, while they packed and even after they finished. Sometime during they’re late conversation, Ryelee had fallen asleep.

They finally arrived at the airport, midmorning and checked their bags. They had some time to kill before they could board their plane. So, Ryelee and Rydel went to Starbucks and grabbed a coffee. Sitting at a table, they checked their seat numbers. “What’s yours,” Rydel asked as she pulled hers out of her bag.
“I’m in seat 25F,” Ryelee answered and took a sip from her steaming coffee.
“Oh no,” Rydel whined as she gazed at her ticket. “I’m going to be like three rows behind you.”
“I hope I’m not sitting alone,” Ryelee murmured.
“Come on girls,” Stormie called, waving her hand. “We’re going to board.”
The girls grabbed their coffees and their tickets and jogged over to meet Stormie. They walked over to the gate together and got in line. The boys were a few people in front of them, boarding first.
Riker hadn’t said much to her yet this morning. Thank God. He’d been kind of mean before when he said that he didn’t want her to come. She was just happy that he hadn’t made anymore comments like that. She wanted to have a good, calm vacation and if he got on her last nerve, it wasn’t going to happen.
They went through security and showed the woman standing at the gate entrance their tickets.
“I’ll see you when we land,” Rydel gave a small smile as she continued through the plane with her bag.
Ryelee found her seat and put her bag in the overhead bin. She slid into her seat on the aisle and glanced around the plane. All of the Lynches and Ellington were scattered across the plane. They all seemed to be sitting in pairs. She turned towards the front as Riker walked down the aisle from the bathroom. Oh no.
“You have got to be kidding me,” Riker murmured as he stopped at her seat. He slid past her and sat in his seat next to the window.
“Trust me,” Ryelee scoffed. “I’d much rather be sitting next to Rydel.”
Riker snapped his seatbelt together and gazed out the window while the flight attendant went through the flight instructions.
Ryelee gripped the armrests tightly as the plane ascended into the sky. She was never a big fan of flying. Once in the sky, she glanced at Riker. “Can I ask you something?”
Riker turned his head with a blank expression on his face.
“Okay, so, I’m not sure why you hate me. You pretty much always have, but can we please just put that aside for this month? I want to have a fun vacation and I don’t want to be alienated by you.”
Riker’s face softened, “You think I hate you?”
“You’re really asking me that,” Ryelee shifted in her seat to face him. “There’s nothing but snarky comments that come out of your mouth when you’re around me and you always tease me with your fake flirting.”
“I don’t hate you Ryelee,” Riker spoke softly. “I’m sorry that you thought that.”
“Why wouldn’t I think that. A month after we met, you were always like glaring at me.”
“God, Rye,” Riker sighed and shifted in his seat to face her.
The drink cart came flying through and smacked against her elbow. “Ow,” she yelped and grabbed her arm, tears rushing to her eyes.
“Are you okay?” Riker quickly leaned over to examine her arm for her. He turned his head to look at her face. His lips were inches from hers and she could smell his minty breath. He looked down at her elbow again before leaning back in his seat. “There’s a red mark, but there’s no blood.” He looked across the plane towards Rocky and Ross before he cleared his throat and sat back in his seat.
Ryelee glanced over at Rocky and saw that he was giving a glare in their direction. When he saw that she was looking, he gave her a smile. She turned back to Riker and asked, “What’s going on?”
He gave her a small smile, “Nothing.” He glanced around before asking, “Do you want to switch seats? You could look out the window and you won’t get banged up anymore.”
“Really,” her eyebrows rose and he nodded. They both stood and shuffled into the aisle. Ryelee gave him a smile as she slid into the seat he just left. He slid in beside her as she pulled out her blanket from her bag. She pulled it up to her chin and leaned against the side of the plane, looking out the window. “So, we have a truce right? At least for this vacation?”
“Yeah, truce,” Riker murmured.
***********************
Riker changed the song on his phone and glanced over at Ryelee. Her eyes were closed and her breathing was steady. Her nose twitched and she shifted in her seat. His body tensed when she settled her head on his shoulder, curling up beside him.
He reached over and adjusted her blanket before looking down at his phone. He felt absolutely horrible when she accused him of hating her earlier. He could see why she thought that. Riker had tried to keep a distance from her when he knew that he had feelings for her and the best way to do that was to make snappy comments. They kept her at a distance and she wouldn’t notice how he really felt. Sometimes he slipped up and flirted with her, but she thought he had been faking it.
Riker had hoped that his feelings would have gone away after Rocky came to him and told him that he liked Ryelee too. Rocky was probably better for her anyways. He wanted to give Rocky a chance at a girl he liked, but it’s been years and he still hasn’t made a move either.
Maybe Riker was waiting for nothing because Rocky was over her. Maybe this trip would be his chance to tell Ryelee how he really feels. Whether she will believe him or not. He’d have to show her his true feelings for her. After how he treated her the last few years there’s no way he would believe her if he told her. She’d just think he was joking again.

Rydel met Carly at her locker before school. “Hey, are you doing anything after school today?”
“I was just going to go home. Why?” Carly answered as she put her books inside her locker.
“Oh, you left this at my place last night,” Rydel handed Carly her play book. Carly shut her locker as Rydel said, “Do you want to hang out again tonight? Maybe sleep over?”
“I would love to,” Carly cheered as they walked down the hall.
An arm draped over Carly’s shoulders and she turned to her head to see Josh. She tried to shove him off but he only held on tighter.
“Would you get off of me,” Carly tried to get away from Josh.
“Get off of her,” a guy shouted and shoved into Josh, making all of them tumble to the hallway floor.
“Hey! Hey! Hey!” a guy shouted and ripped Rocky off of Josh. Carly sat up, holding her forehead. “What’s going on out here?” Riker held Rocky away from Josh as Rydel helped Carly off the floor.
The boys glared at each other without speaking.
“Nobody’s going to talk? Fine. We’ll settle this in detention after school with me.” Riker turned to Carly. “That means you too.”
“She didn’t even do anything,” Rydel defended as Carly continued to hold her head.
“We’ll find out tonight won’t we,” Riker scoffed and Rydel was taken aback. He turned to Rocky, “Get to math, now.”
“Fine,” Rocky stormed off in the opposite direction.
Riker turned back to everyone else and said, “Get in the auditorium.” It’s as if a switch flipped off in him and he realized that Carly was still holding her head. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” she answered with a straight face. She took a couple of steps and wobbled slightly.
“You’re not fine,” Riker quickly wrapped his arm around her before she fell over. “I’m taking you to the nurse to get checked out.”
“I’m fine really,” Carly protested as Riker practically drug her to the nurse’s office.
“Then why are you holding your head,” Riker shot back as he opened the door. If her head wasn’t in so much pain right now she could actually enjoy Riker’s arm wrapped around her. No matter what, she felt safe in his arms.
“Oh my, what happened here?” the nurse came and took her from Riker.
“She got knocked over and must have hit her head,” Riker explained as the bell rang. “I have to get to class,” Riker said as he watched Carly sit in a wooden chair. “You can come when she gives you the all clear.”
Carly let out a puff of breath and watched Riker walk out of the room. The nurse stepped in front of her with a flash light, shining the light in her eyes. She finally took her hand away from her head and the nurse examined the red bump on her forehead.
“I don’t think you have a concussion,” the nurse said as she handed Carly a paper cup and a couple pills. “Take this and your headache should go away.” Carly swallowed the pills down as the nurse came back over with an ice pack. “And ice that bump. It’ll help keep the swelling down.”
“Thanks,” Carly placed the cold pack on her forehead, cringing at the slight pain the pressure caused. “Can I go to class now?”
“Of course. You’re free to go.”
Carly nodded and stood up slowly to make sure she wasn’t dizzy before she started walking towards the auditorium. She swung the heavy door open. As soon as she stepped inside, Riker picked his head up and watched her walk to her seat. She sat in her seat as Riker came over.
“Everyone is reading the first act to themselves this morning,” Riker spoke in a hushed voice. “If you make it through you can get started on the homework, reading the second act.”
“Got it,” Carly spoke firmly and Riker gave her a nod before he walked away.
“How’s your head,” Rydel leaned over, whispering softly.
“It hurts and I have a bump on my forehead. The nurse thinks that I’ll be fine,” Carly shrugged.
“Do you still want to come over?” Rydel whispered as she glanced at Riker. “I understand if you don’t, but if you do, I can wait for you so you don’t have to walk alone.”
“I’m still coming,” Carly smiled slightly. “Besides, it’s not like I’ll have to see him forever anyway.”
Rydel nodded and turned back to her book.
Carly opened hers and looked down at the small pages. Her head hurt too much to focus, so she closed the book and rested her head back against the seat. She closed her eyes and listened to everyone else flipping their pages simultaneously. It was going to be a long day if her head didn’t get any better. To make it all worse, she still had detention to get through. At least Rocky will have her back.
At the end of the day, Rydel came up to Carly’s locker. “So I’m not actually allowed in his office with you all but I’m going to go study in the library. Send me a text when you’re done.”
“Sure. Thanks for sticking around,” Carly gave Rydel a small smile.
“How’s your head,” Rydel asked as they walked up the stairs together.
“It’s a lot better now. It stopped throbbing, but there’s still a dull ache,” Carly answered as they reached Riker’s office. “I’ll take more medicine when I get to your place.”
“No problem,” Rydel nodded. “I’ll see you later.” With that, Rydel walked down the rest of the hall and into the library.
Carly let out a sigh and turned the knob. She stepped into the classroom and shut the door behind her. It was bigger than she thought it would be. There were choir risers along one wall and the other half of the room served as his office with a large desk and a few smaller ones for students.
“Take a seat,” Riker nodded his head towards the three desks opposite of his.
Rocky and Josh were already in two of them. The only desk left was between them.
“Um,” she spoke softly.
“Is there a problem?”
“I’d just rather not sit next to Josh,” Carly answered shyly.
“Well I don’t want the boys sitting next to each other, now sit.”
Defeated, Carly walked over the desk and sat down. She folded her hands on top of the desk and looked down. She couldn’t seem to meet Riker’s gaze, not when he was in teacher mode so strongly. It just felt weird. Add to the fact that she’s never gotten detention before.
“Now, who wants to tell me what happened this morning?” Riker sat at his desk, facing them.
“Well, Rydel and I were walking to class,” Carly started quietly.
“Please look at me,” Riker interrupted.
Carly picked her head up and stared into his eyes. There was no warmth like other times. His eyes seemed almost cold. “Josh wrapped his arm around my shoulders and I told him to stop. I tried pushing him away from me but he wouldn’t let me go.”
Riker’s jaw twitched but his expression remained neutral.
“I saw what was happening and I tried to help,” Rocky spoke up and Carly looked at him. “I accidently took Carly down with me when I tackled Josh because he held her so tightly.” Rocky turned to her, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Carly nodded before looking back down at her hands.
Rocky spoke softly, “She shouldn’t even be here. She didn’t do anything wrong.”
Everyone stayed quiet for a moment before Riker asked, “Josh, do you have anything to say?”
“They’re lying,” Josh scoffed as he folded his arms over his chest.
Carly gaped at him.
“Yes, I had my arm wrapped around Carly’s shoulder but she could have gotten away if she really wanted to. If you ask me, Rocky was jealous and attacked me.”
“He’s lying,” Carly protested, looking at Riker again. “My shoulder ached from where he squeezed me.”
“All right. I’ve heard enough,” Riker held his hands up. “You’re all just going to sit here I guess because you all can’t seem to get your story straight and I’m not sure who to believe.”
“This is so stupid,” Rocky scoffed. “Let Carly go. She’s innocent in all of this.”
“Be quiet Rocky,” Riker looked down at his desk, shuffling a few papers.
Rocky crossed his arms over his chest and muttered, “This is bullshit.”
Riker chose to ignore the comment and kept grading papers.
Josh leaned over to Carly and whispered, “What are you doing after we get out of here?”
Carly ignored him as she watched Riker make red marks on a worksheet.
“Carly, answer me, babe,” Josh put his hand on her shoulder.
Quickly retaliating, she swung her fist at him and nailed him in the chest. “Don’t touch me.”
“Ow,” Josh yelped, holding his hand on his peck. “Mr. Lynch, she punched me in the chest. Do something.”
Riker looked up at Carly and Josh with a straight face. “Sorry. I didn’t see anything.” He checked the clock on the wall before turning to Carly. “I think you’ve had enough. You can go home.”
Carly quickly stood and collected her things. “What about Rocky?”
“He tackled Josh. He needs to sit,” Riker answered before looking back down at his desk. “Now go before I change my mind.”
“Go Carly. I’m fine,” Rocky encouraged before Carly walked out of the room.
She sent Rydel a text and almost instantly, Rydel came out of the library. “He let you go early? Why?”
“I don’t know,” Carly shrugged as they started walking towards Rydel’s house. “I’m not questioning it.” They walked in silence for a few moments and Carly gasped, “Do you want to know some gossip on your brother?”
“All of the time,” Rydel moved closer to Carly.
“Last night I found out that Riker and Daphne don’t live together and I asked why,” Carly whispered in a hushed voice and Rydel nodded. “He said that sometimes people just drift apart. I think you’re right. They might be close to breaking up.”
“Yes!” Rydel cheered, throwing her fists in the air. “I seriously hate her and I don’t hate anyone.”
“I mean it’s not official or anything,” Carly quickly pointed out. “I wouldn’t recommend asking him about it today either. He’s still kind of…mean.”
“I won’t say anything to him,” Rydel grinned as they walked into her house.
“Well, it’s about…” a Daphne trailed off when she stepped into the entry way. “Oh. It’s just you. Where’s your brother?”
“Oh you mean you can’t reach him?” Rydel smirked as she adjusted her backpack.
“No. Now where is he,” she scoffed as she eyed Carly.
“I think he mentioned something about going to see some woman after school. I can’t remember what her name was, but he said he would be like an hour,” Rydel answered and Carly studied her curiously.
Rydel grabbed Carly’s hand and quickly jogged up to her bedroom. As soon as the door was shut, Rydel burst out laughing.
“Rydel, why did you lie to her,” Carly whispered as she tossed her backpack on the bed. “That was kind of mean.”
Rydel took a deep breath as she sunk onto her bed. “You’re right. She just gets on my nerves. She’s always keeping tabs on him. I just wanted to let her stew for a few minutes before he got home.”
The front door shut down downstairs and seconds later Daphne yelled, “Where the hell have you been?”
“At school. Where do you think I was?” Riker scoffed in return and Carly and Rydel quickly jumped up. They jogged to the staircase and hid behind the wall so they could listen.
“You’re lying,” Daphne yelled in return. “You’re late.”
“I was supervising detention. Why are you acting so insane?”
“I know you were with another woman! Who is she?”
“What?” Riker screamed and a door slammed.
Rydel’s eyes grew wide as Carly stared at her.
Carly mouthed, “What did you do?”
Rydel gave a shrug.
“I’ve never been with another woman! I’ve been faithful the entire time. I can’t honestly say the same about you.”
“Are you kidding me,” Daphne yelled and a crash was heard.
Rydel covered her mouth with both of her hands.
“Do you want to run that by me again,” Daphne scoffed.
“You heard me,” Riker held his ground.
“Where did you hear that from? That stupid girl that’s been hanging around Rydel?”
Carly’s mouth dropped open.
“She’s not stupid and she has nothing to do with this,” Riker scoffed. “I’m not an idiot. I know you’ve been sleeping around.”
“Well, if you’re so sure, why are you still with me,” Daphne yelled.
“That’s a good question. We’re done!”
A loud smack rang through the house before the front door slammed shut. Rydel and Carly froze when Riker came up the stairs. Riker glanced at them, revealing a red hand print on the side of his face. “Did you enjoy the show,” Riker murmured.
“Riker, did she hit you,” Rydel stood up and grabbed his face.
“What was your first clue,” Riker scoffed and gently shoved Rydel away. He went into the bathroom and slammed the door behind him.
Carly turned to Rydel, “What did you do?”
“I was just poking fun, but I’m not sorry they broke up,” Rydel whispered as they moved back to her bedroom. “It was long overdue.”
“You’re nuts,” Carly shook her head as she flopped down on Rydel’s bed. “Do you think they’ll stay broken up?” Carly hoped that they would. It would give Riker a chance to be happy and she wouldn’t feel as guilty about her feelings for him. Of course he was still her teacher which made things super complicated.
“I think so,” Rydel nodded. “He’ll finally see that he’s better off without her.” There was a knock on Rydel’s door and she called, “Come in.”
Riker opened the door and stepped into the room. The red hand print was still very visible on his face. “Carly, can I talk to you?”
“Sure,” Carly spoke softly as she followed Riker from the room. He led her down the hall into a guest bedroom. He shut the door partially before turning to face her. “What did you want to talk about?”
“Daphne mentioned that you said something about me cheating on her. Is that true,” Riker folded his arms over his chest.
Carly’s eyes grew wide, “No. Of course not.”
“Well, then why would she say that,” Riker shook his head.
She shrugged. “I don’t know.” She paused before she said, “She sounded like she was just getting defensive. Liars get defensive. I promise that I didn’t say anything like that.”
Riker sighed as he relaxed and started pacing the room. “I’m sorry you had to hear all of that. She just gets me so mad.”
“It’s probably not my place, but your girlfriend probably shouldn’t make you that mad all of the time,” Carly responded meekly.
Riker sunk onto the large queen bed and sighed as he placed his head in his hands. “You’re right,” he mumbled.
Hesitantly, Carly sat next to Riker. “You’re probably better off without her.”
Riker picked his head up and looked at Carly.
“I’m just saying,” Carly whispered and gave a small shrug. She stared at his red cheek. Her eyebrows scrunched together as she gently touched her fingertips to his cheek. “How does your cheek feel? She shouldn’t have hit you.”
“It stings,” Riker whispered as he studied her with his deep brown eyes.
Carly dropped her hand from his face and gave him a small smile. “Ice might help.”
“I’ll be fine,” Riker nodded as he gave her knee a small squeeze. “But thanks. It’s really easy to talk to you. You’re like a second sister to me.”
Carly’s heart plummeted to her stomach. A second sister? She just lost all hope in him ever liking her more than a student. He thought about her as a sister, like Rydel. Great.
“It’s really easy for me to talk to you too,” Carly gave him a small smile. “I should get back to Rydel.”
Riker nodded before she took off.
Ugh. His sister. She’ll never forget that.
Shortly after she went back into Rydel’s room, Rocky came in. “Hey, what are you guys doing tonight?”
“We were just going to hang out, why?” Rydel asked.
Rocky shut the door before whispering, “Want to sneak off to a party tonight?”
“Are you nuts?” Rydel whispered. “Do you remember what happened last time?”
“We’ll be fine,” Rocky whispered in return. “Mom and Dad won’t find out.”
“I’m in,” Carly stood and went to Rydel’s closet. “I need to let loose.” And drink. She needed to forget what Riker said.
“Yes,” Rocky cheered softly. “We’ll leave after they go to bed.”
“Sweet,” Carly smirked as she pulled out one of Rydel’s dresses. “We’ll be ready.”
Finally, at the party, they made their way to the drink table right away. “I’ll be the DD,” Rydel said as she poured herself a cup of orange juice. “I want to be safe about this,” she said as Carly poured herself a large drink.
“Well I want to get drunk,” Carly answered as she slammed a large portion of her drink off the top.
“Why the sudden need,” Rydel asked over the loud music.
“I had a bad day,” Carly answered as they moved through the house.
“Okay, but I’ll be here to take care of you if you need it,” Rydel said as they swayed to the music.
“Thanks Delly,” Carly smiled as she moved to the dance floor in the living room. Rocky joined her and they started dancing with other people from school. The whole night, Carly rotated getting more drinks with dancing with random guys to take her mind off of Riker.
Hours later, Carly staggered over to Rydel and Rocky along the wall of the living room. “Hey,” Carly slurred as she hung on Rydel. “I’m so glad that we’re friends.”
“Me too,” Rydel held on to her. She turned to Rocky, “We need to go now.”
“Agreed,” Rocky nodded and set his cup down. He grabbed onto the other side of Carly and walked her out of the house. “Carly, how much have you had to drink?”
“Enough,” she giggled as Rocky laid her down in the backseat.
“Yes, I can see that,” Rocky nodded before shutting the door. Rocky got into the passenger seat as Rydel started the car.
“Rocky, what are we going to do? We can’t take her home?” Rydel pulled away from the curb. “Mom and Dad would find out that we snuck out if we brought her home like this.”
“Guys, I’m fine,” Carly called from the back seat as she tried to sit up.
“Carly, just lay down honey,” Rydel called as she kept driving.
“Go to Riker’s,” Rocky spoke seriously. “He wouldn’t tell.”
“Are you nuts? He’s our teacher,” Rydel glanced at him.
“Just do it,” Rocky shifted in his seat. “He’s picked me up drunk before and I just crashed at his place. He won’t tell.”
“Fine,” Rydel sighed and took the next right. She parked in the apartment complex’s parking lot. Rydel and Rocky got out of the car and Rocky helped Carly slide out. They both wrapped an arm around Carly and made their way into the building. They walked up the three flights of stairs, stumbling on occasion.
“Where are we?” Carly slurred as they stopped in front of Riker’s door.
“Shh,” Rydel hissed at her before she knocked on the door. They waited a few minutes before knocking again.
“All right,” Riker called from inside. “Fuck. I’m coming.” A lock clicked and the door swung open. A tired, messy hair, Riker stood in front of the door in nothing but a pair of sweatpants. “It’s 1:30 in the morning. What the hell are you doing here?”
“Hey, I know you,” Carly giggled as she pointed at Riker.
“Is she drunk,” Riker hissed.
“Yes and heavy,” Rydel cringed.
“Fine. Get in here,” Riker grabbed Carly from Rydel and Rocky, leading her inside.
“Why didn’t you just take her home,” Riker asked as he sat Carly on his couch.
“We snuck out,” Rocky answered and Riker glared at him. “I didn’t know that she would get drunk. I only had a few.”
“And you drove,” Riker stormed over to his kitchen.
“No. I did and I just had orange juice,” Rydel reassured. “I was the responsible one.”
“Yeah, well, you’re still not off the hook,” Riker answered as he poured a glass of water. He moved back into the living room and sat on the coffee table in front of Carly. He held out the glass, “Drink this.”
Carly gave him a smile as she grabbed the glass from him. “Thanks handsome.”
Riker nodded, “You’re welcome.” He turned to glare at Rocky, “You guys should have watched her better.”
“She had about as much as I did and I’m barely even buzzed,” Rocky replied bashfully.
“She’s also half your size,” Riker scoffed and Rocky retreated to the chair across the room to sit down.
“Riker, is it okay if we stay here for the night?” Rydel asked softly as she sat next to Carly. “I don’t want her to get in trouble with Mom and Dad. Please don’t tell. It was just a onetime thing.”
Riker gave Rocky a sideways glance before turning back to Rydel. “Fine. You can stay here, but you’re coming up with the lie to tell Mom and Dad.”
“Deal,” Rydel nodded as Carly tried to stand.
“I have to go to the bathroom,” Carly slurred as she staggered.
Riker quickly grabbed her before she fell over. “All right. Come with me.” Riker helped her walk down the hall into his small bathroom. He leaned her against the sink. “If you need anything just yell.”
“Okay handsome,” she smirked.
Riker nodded and left the room, shutting the door behind him. He leaned against the door and shut his eyes. He heard the toilet flush and a few seconds later some of his stuff hitting the floor. He opened the door and found Carly bent over his sink.
She held in a laugh as she washed her hands. “Sorry.”
“I’m sure you are,” Riker answered as he picked his things up, before grabbing her around the waist. He led her to his bedroom and set her on his bed. He went to his dresser and pulled a pair of sweatpants and t-shirt out. He set them on the bed next to her. “Do you need help getting into these?”
Carly stood up and wrapped her arms around Riker’s waist. She rubbed her hands on his bare chest and he tried to get her to stop. “Are you going to help me get into them?” she whispered in his ear.
“Carly come on,” Riker tried pushing her away without her falling over. “You’re drunk. You’re not thinking.”
Carly grabbed both sides of his face and leaned in, kissing his lips.
Riker froze in his place, before coming to his senses. He pushed Carly back and made her sit on the bed. He put his hand over his mouth before rubbing his neck as he backed out of the room. “Rydel please go help Carly change her clothes.”
“Sure thing,” Rydel jumped up and ran into Riker’s bedroom.
Riker sighed and flopped back onto the couch. He took his glasses off and rubbed his eyes.
“Is she doing okay,” Rocky asked softly.
“She’s drunk,” Riker spoke as he slid his glasses on his face again.
“Are you mad,” Rocky whispered.
“I’m not mad, disappointed yes, but not mad,” Riker answered softly. “Just get in the second bedroom and go to bed.”
“Okay,” Rocky nodded and stood. He crossed the room and shut the door behind him.
Riker stood and went back to his bedroom. “Is everyone decent?” Riker called before he came into view of the open door.
“We’re good,” Rydel called.
Riker entered his bedroom and grabbed one of his pillows. He grabbed a blanket off of the chair in the corner of the room. He turned and stared at Carly passed out in his bed, wearing his clothes.
She kissed him. She kissed her teacher. What had he done that told her that that was okay? Hell. Just tonight he said that he thought of her like a sister. So, why was it weird that he liked the kiss before he had the common sense to push her away.
“You okay?” Rydel asked as she crawled into bed next to Carly.
“I’m fine. I’m just tired,” Riker nodded as he ran his hand through his hair. “I’ll be on the couch if you need me.”
Rydel nodded before he exited the room.
Riker set himself up on the couch and laid down on his makeshift bed. He stared up at the ceiling running tonight’s events through his head over and over. God. He must be losing it. He can’t be attracted to a student.
He rolled over and threw his glasses on the coffee table before closing his eyes. The apartment was finally quiet. He could finally get some sleep.
The next morning Riker woke up to the sound of someone vomiting. He grimaced as he sat up. He did not get enough sleep last night. Rydel came out of the bathroom holding her stomach as she walked towards the kitchen.
“Why are you sick?” Riker asked before he let out a yawn.
“It’s not me. It’s Carly but the sound is making me nauseous,” Rydel answered as she poured a cup of coffee.
“Okay. I can handle it,” Riker stood from the couch and took the mug of coffee from her. “Just turn on the TV to drown out the noise and make some breakfast.”
Rydel nodded as Riker made his way to the bathroom. He almost hoped that she didn’t remember last night, but even if she didn’t, he still felt like he should tell her what happened between the two of them. It was only fair. He stepped into the doorway of the bathroom and found Carly sitting next to the toilet, still in his sweats.
“How’s your stomach?” Riker asked and Carly gazed up at him, her skin kind of pale.
“I feel like shit,” Carly spoke softly as Riker sat on the floor in front of her.
“You should feel like shit,” Riker nodded and offered her the mug of coffee. “Drink this. It’ll help.”
Carly took the mug and took a small sip. She cringed, “Black coffee.”
“Sweetener will make your stomach worse.”
She grimaced and took another sip. Quickly, she set the mug of the floor and leaned over the toilet again, throwing up. Riker pulled her hair back and gently rubbed her back with his free hand. When she finished, she wiped her mouth and flushed the toilet.
“I feel a bit better now,” Carly whispered as she slowly sat back down on the floor.
“I’m sure you do,” Riker nodded and he stood. He rummaged through a drawer and sat back down holding a hair tie.
“Why do you have these?” Carly asked as she threw her hair up in a messy bun.
“I had a girlfriend remember,” Riker answered and Carly nodded slightly. “I occasionally use them myself.” He leaned over and closed the door quietly. “We need to talk about last night,” he whispered and Carly stared at him.
“Are you going to yell at me,” Carly asked with a straight face.
“No. You did something last night,” Riker whispered and Carly looked puzzled. “Carly you kissed me.”
Her cheeks heated up, turning bright red.
“You kept calling me handsome,” Riker continued and Carly covered her face with her hands.
“Oh God. Please stop,” Carly whispered.
“I’m not mad Carly,” Riker shook his head and she looked up at him, tears in her eyes.
“God. I’m so embarrassed,” Carly shook her head and sniffled a little.
Riker moved towards her slightly. “It’s okay. You were drunk.” Carly pursed her lips together and looked down at the floor. “Come get some breakfast. It’ll help your stomach. You need to soak up the alcohol.”
Carly nodded as Riker helped her stand up. They both walked out into the kitchen and he helped her sit at the table. “Rydel,” Riker called when he saw that there was no food prepared. “He went to the fridge and opened it up. Nothing. He hadn’t gone shopping yet.
He shut the door and saw a note that read. “Ran to the store. I’ll be back soon. Rydel.”
“Okay, well, I guess we wait for food,” Riker said as he poured two mugs of coffee. He sat at the table next to Carly and passed her one. “Drink up.” He took a big swig of his own as she sipped hers.
The apartment door opened and Daphne walked in, calling, “Riker are you awake?” She stopped when she saw Carly at Riker at the table together.
“What the hell is she doing here? And in your clothes?” Daphne screamed. “Is she the girl you’ve been screwing behind my back? Your own student?”
“What the hell are you doing here,” Riker scoffed as he shot up from the table. “Get out of my apartment and give me my key back.”
“Get up bitch,” Daphne stormed over to Carly and yanked her up from her chair.
“Get off of me,” Carly tried to fight back.
“Let go of Carly,” Riker yelled and tried to separate the two girls.
“What’s going on out here,” Rocky mumbled as he came out of the guest room.
“Seriously, let me go. I don’t feel good,” Carly yelled as she tried to fight off Daphne.
Daphne grabbed a hold of Carly’s hair and yanked hard making Carly let out a scream. “You little skank,” Daphne gripped Carly harder. “You sleep with your teacher and you steal my boyfriend. You’ll pay for this.”
“Whoa, nobody slept with anyone,” Rocky jumped in. “Rydel, Carly and I crashed her last night. We went to a party and didn’t want to go home.”
Daphne released Carly and she fell to the floor, vomiting. Rocky rushed to Carly’s side as Riker pushed Daphne back towards the door.
“Get out and don’t come back. Give me my key back,” Riker grabbed Daphne’s keys from her hand. He quickly took his key off the ring and threw her keys back at her. “Get out. Now.”
“Not until you answer me. Did you sleep with her?”
“No. The last person I slept with was you. The only person I slept with was you,” Riker replied as he stared into her eyes. Why couldn’t she see that he was telling the truth.
“I love you Riker,” Daphne tried to wrap her arms around his waist.
“Don’t,” Riker shook his head as he backed away from her. “We’re done. Get out.”
“I’m not just going to give up on us like we were nothing,” Daphne scoffed before she slammed the door behind her.
Riker took a deep breath through his nose before turning around. He grabbed a few towels from the closet in the hallway and went back to the kitchen to help Carly and Rocky. “Are you okay,” Riker bent down on the floor and handed her a wash cloth.
“I’m fine,” Carly whispered as she wiped her mouth on the towel.
Riker started wiping up the mess as Rocky helped her back into the chair at the table. He saw Carly wipe a tear away before she fixed her hair.
The door to the apartment door opened again and Rydel stepped inside. She paused and asked, “What the hell happened?”
“Daphne showed up and Carly got sick,” Riker replied straight faced and walked the towels to the bathroom, throwing them into the bathtub.
“What? Carly are you okay?” Rydel rushed into the kitchen. “Just hang tight. I’m going to make some eggs and toast for you.”
“Thanks Delly,” Carly whispered as she grabbed her mug of coffee.
“You’re welcome, Carly,” Rydel answered as she started cooking. “What happened with Daphne?”
“She attacked Carly,” Rocky sat down at the table and ran his fingers through his long, brown hair. “She had her by the hair and was accusing her of sleeping with Riker. Totally psycho.”
“Hell yeah,” Rydel scoffed. “God. Riker why were you ever with her?”
“Shut up Rydel,” Riker scoffed before storming out of the room. He went into his bedroom and threw open his dresser drawers.
“Hey,” Carly spoke and Riker quickly turned his head. She held out his cup of coffee and he took it from her. “She means well. I promise.”
“I know she does, it’s just…”
“Do you still love her?” Carly asked as heat rose in her cheeks. She shook her head, “Sorry. You don’t have to answer that.”
“I think I stopped loving her a long time ago,” Riker whispered as he sat on the end of his bed before he drank his coffee.
Carly sat next to him and took a sip of her own. “Then why were you with her for so long?” she asked softly.
“I think I was trying to hold onto my old life,” Riker answered. “The life I had before the accident.”
Carly kept quiet hoping that Riker would continue.
When it looked like he wasn’t going to say anything else, he said, “I was close to becoming a professional dancer. I had loved to dance ever since I was a little kid. When I was in college, I taught dance classes on the side of my own dancing. I had a few people looking at me for potential jobs.”
When Riker paused, Carly whispered, “What happened?”
“My friends and I decided to take a trip up to Colorado right after finals let out,” Riker spoke as he stared at the coffee mug in his hands. “We had a few drinks before we went up on the mountain. It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time because we’d all done it before.”
Carly watched him as her eyebrows furrowed together.
“Coming down the mountain on my snowboard, I lost control and had a horrible fall.” Riker paused as he pursed his lips together. “I’m missing a lot of cartilage in my knee. I had been laid up in a cast for months. For a while, I was hardly ever sober, but I got help. I’ve been sober now for two years, seven months and twelve days.” Riker shook his head, “I don’t know why I’m telling you all of this.”
“I’m glad you did,” Carly whispered as she gently placed her hand on his bare back.
Riker turned his head and gazed into her eyes. “Carly, what happened last night, it can’t happen again. I won’t tell anyone. We can be friends outside of school, but I’m still your teacher.”
She dropped her hand and placed it in her lap again. “I know that. The last thing I would want is for you to lose your job because I made a mistake. I’m really sorry.”
Riker nodded slightly. “I think you should hit the road after you guys eat. You and Rydel have auditions to prepare for and I have lesson plans that I need to make.”
“No problem,” Carly nodded and slowly stood from his bed. “I’ll go see if it’s ready.”
Riker nodded as he watched her leave. He could see her hips sway even in his baggy sweatpants. Quickly shaking his head, he flung those thoughts out of his head really quick. He can’t be thinking about her that way. She was his student. He wouldn’t be having these thoughts if she wouldn’t have kissed him last night. God. Why did things have to go get complicated? He’d have to fight it. He was a strong man with enough control to restrain himself from doing something stupid that could end his career. He’d done it before with dancing and he wasn’t going to do it again with teaching. He was smarter than that now. At least he hoped he was.
