what’s a henway?
ABOUT 3 TO 5 POUNDS!!!!
I understand the usefulness of saying 'violence never solves anything' and the importance of the social norm that "political violence is unacceptable" but I do find it very, very funny when people pretend they actually believe these things, ESPECIALLY american liberal-democrats (in the classical sense not in the voteblue sense). Because it requires the American believing their own revolution was unjustifiable and that slavery being ended by war was also unjustified. Unless you are a practicing Janist you do believe that a degree of violence is permissible or necessary or justified under certain conditions. I've never met someone who said they believed these things that actually did believe these things when pressed.
I think it's more useful to frame ones objections to violence and political violence as necessary for the functioning of society, rather than as abstract Truths.
The median level of political discourse is just not very advanced.
Voteblues have been winding themselves up, but they don't really know a whole lot, and they don't really think things through all that much. The median person that they're arguing against also isn't that politically sophisticated.
The voteblues are showing off how brave and loyal they are by calling for a war. It never even occurs to them that, under the U.S. system, like half the policy they want could be done by California, and if California isn't doing it now, there is no reason to believe that it would be done after a war. Likewise, some of the things they want have no suitable policy available.
The person arguing against them also won't know this, so instead of, "if we don't know how to have perfect schools now, how would fighting a war teach us how to have perfect schools?" we get "violence never solves anything."
Essentially, the opponent is trapped in the assumption that the voteblues are correct on policy, and are only wrong on how much violence is suitable.
I’m tellin’ ya Scoob. Like, I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder. Man, one of the four beasts saying “come and see” and, like, I saw! But then I was like ZOINKS!! A white horse!!!

Even if it ends up turning out that he was killed by mossad or Russia or some incoherent loony, the left reaction has done the damage as if one of theirs had killed him.
Why do the reactions of powerless online people only matter when they’re on the left? I’m curious why the grotesquery of the right, on display for a decade now, is never a PR liability for anyone, even when elected officials themselves participate in it.
The Right have created their own alternate reality where every bit of terrorism that might indict their own side is instantly and effortlessly dismissed as a false flag or the work of someone’s disgruntled former subordinate or secret gay lover. Never once is the established Republican Party seen to be “in trouble” for the terrorism of their own people, and not even when their own elected officials themselves make light of it or deny it happened. They generally don’t even bother to loudly condemn the terrorism in the first place because it would be seen as “out of bounds” for any Democratic politician to imply that those terrorists are their responsibility.
But the reactions of like… streamers and Twitter accounts with 20,000 followers to acts of terrorism are seen to be a political liability for like Kamala Harris and AOC.
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, pardoned (!) every single person at the Capitol Riot, including the ones who beat the shit out of cops. And I’m expected to sit here and be lectured about how the inhumane reactions of leftist twitter users and twitch streamers is giving implicit encouragement to political violence in this country. Give me a God damn break.
Every element of the Right stands in lockstep and gives every practical encouragement to right-wing terrorism in this country. The message is always that if you embarrass us with your terrorism, we’ll just pretend it didn’t happen—and if you’re far enough to the right, if you’re one of the white nationalists who are constantly shooting up synagogues, mosques, grocery stores, massacring their race enemies by the dozens at a time, this won’t even be seen as reflecting badly on the mainstream right, who are obviously not related in any way to the extreme right. No such charity for the left though. Any and all actions by far-left radicals are seen as reflecting 100% on the center-left. Anarchists rioting under the banner of “death to Joe Biden!” (my friends!) are still somehow the political responsibility of the Democratic Party.
@friendshapedhole
The proper response to "you're making yourselves look like ghoulish psychopaths to everyone else" is not "but that's not fair."
This is just like a morlock-holmes response where he says that it's not fair to notice what progressives say and do because he thinks conservatives are worse and how come the Republicans don't get in trouble huh? And we've tried explaining this so many different ways, and he just keeps not listening, and keeps saying that things that aren't legible to him can't be real. And at a certain point you just gotta go "well tough titty if you think it's not fair that people keep noticing this, because they are, now fucking act like a person who knows that."
It doesn't matter if people hold the left more accountable because its insane people are so much more visible and visibly accepted, because there's such a greater contrast between the things they say and do and the moral claims they make, because there really are more of them and their hateful opinions are more mainstream, because your power relied more on your stated moral authority and you've burned away all your credibility, because right-wing media personalities are better at deflection, because they're much better at playing offense, or because it's all just a mean trick played by Fox News and it's all a false-flag by alt-righters to make Democrats and progressives look bad. It's happening. We can see it happening. Act like a fucking person who knows that. Have a strategy to rein this in, or to counteract it, or to get in front of the narrative, or to deflect, or to draw more attention to your enemy's misdeeds, or to force THEM to say and do insane things that everyone hates. Anything but "bitching that it's not fair people are noticing this and it's not fair I have to have a strategy."
I’m not bitching that it’s unfair that people are noticing this. I’m bitching that people are full of shit and not “noticing” anything that’s actually real. There’s been maybe a mild juvenile-sadist reaction of “lol the commentator I hate died” from a number of online leftists and that’s about it. It’s the same reaction you’d have seen when Rush Limbaugh died. Few have really “celebrated” it like some big victory, some powerful blow struck against the Right because it obviously isn’t, Kirk wasn’t that important.
No serious or sane person actually fears that out of control leftist violence is swamping this country. Everyone who proclaims to believe such a thing is delusional or self-consciously lying.
It doesn't matter if people are acting like they've struck a powerful blow against the right, because that's not what people are saying. They're saying the left is taking bloodthirsty glee in it, not that they believe it's a major tactical victory, and you are speaking to people on a site that is currently full of this bloodthirsty glee so pretending nobody is doing it is a fucking non-starter.
"No serious person believes out-of-control leftist violence is threatening to swamp this country." Have you ever heard the phrase "when someone tells you who they are, believe them?" Right now a bunch of your friends are telling people they're bloodthirsty ghouls who believe in political violence. The peoole to whom you are currently speaking, on the site you are currently using to speak to them, have seen an absolute shitload of bloodthirsty ghouls praising political violence. We've observed that the left is very good at communicating what it believes because it yells at people who say things it disagrees with, and we've observed few -- not zero, but few -- people decrying bloodlust and a lot MORE people getting mad at decrying bloodlust.
Your argument wasn't that it was unfair that people noticed what your allies were doing, I suppose. Your argument was that nobody had really noticed it and actually they were lying. This is also a stupid argument. "It's not fair you noticed that" and "you didn't notice that" are functionally identical. You think no serious person could notice all that bloodlust coming from your side? Well I guess a huge number of the people you have to appeal to in order to win support and elections aren't serious, so act like a fucking person who knows that.
According to this poll I grabbed because it was the first result, the majority of Americans believe political violence is a major problem. And left-identifying people are twice as likely to think being gleeful at opponents' deaths is okay. And the "very liberal" are 2.5 times as likely to think political violence is justifiable. (And while fear of political violence fluctuates based on which side most recently suffered it, support for it does not.)
"But only 25% of the very liberal think political violence is justified, that means they're not noticing a real thing!" Your counterpoint was that the right actually supported political violence more, and that's not true. You have to now claim that it's not fair that people are noticing the greater support for political violence on your side because that support doesn't constitute the majority, except you've already argued that your enemies are tacitly supporting the violence by not speaking out enough, which means you're bitching that people noticed it from your side and not from the other. You claimed that the Right is guilty of all this terrorism and the Left never is, and that's not true, and you claim the Right is always okay with and supporting it, which is not true, because they're better at denouncing it. After the Hortman shooting, a Congressional Republican gave a genuinely impassioned speech about how repulsive and abhorrent it was, how it had no place in democracy, and all it proved was that Americans should be united because we are stronger together. After the Kirk shooting, when someone asked that they say a few words out loud, Congressional Democrats got upset about it.
And even if you were right. Even if every right-wing person was secretly cheerleading political violence. Even if every act of violence was from the right and the right loved it and the right never stopped it. You are still bitching that it isn't fair people noticed your side doing it. 80% of people think the Kirk killing represents a deep problem in American society and you are bitching that it isn't fair they associate that problem with your team and you are claiming they don't REALLY believe that because no SERIOUS person could have noticed it and not noticed your enemies doing it.
Well they fucking did.
So act like a person who knows that.
