Rory adores that he’s your friend. You’re the only other person here who doesn’t shit talk him behind his back, yank on his hair or hoodie to bully him, or shove his books out of his hands like it’s some cheesy eighties movie about jocks and nerds.
He’s 22. Highschool dumbassery like that should’ve been outdated decades ago, yet here he is, in a town that hates anything intellectual.
Except for you. You’re the only one who’s capable of having conversations that don’t rely on solely platitudes and barely there effort. You two seem to be the only ones who get it. Rowan is…getting there. Daddy’s boy and all. He’ll take time but he isn’t on his shit list yet.
Rory sighs as he flicks through photos on his phone. Every one with you in it, he can see how much life he has in his eyes. It can’t really be a shock now that he sits and thinks about it. Without you, what would he have to really be enthusiastic about? Sure he has his studies, and little bugs that walk around, and maybe a few mushroom friends. But You add so much more.
It’s cute how oblivious you are in some of these photos too. Unaware and in your own little world as you two discuss this and that, only to catch him at just the last second before he clicks. You two always share a laugh about it, yet he never gets rid of them.
A darker thought comes to mind at that revelation.
Just…How much could he get away with? How much do you intrinsically trust him? Could he capture a few photos of you while you sleep, none the wiser? It’s not like he’d be a creep! It’s just a nice memory to show that you two are close and you feel safe! Your sweet face, lulled into sleep, while he can stroke your hair and face, and stare at those tempting lips.
Alright. Maybe, just maybe, he’s a bit of a creep. But it’s not like that! It’s more…Wholesome! Yeah, that’s the word! He just wants to bask in your love and warmth while you two face the world! As well as poison anyone who’s ever wronged you. That’s not psycho, that’s just the bare minimum! Anyone else in his shoes with his intelligence would understand!
His cheeks flush. Darker thoughts begin to emerge as more revelations come to light.
He could do more than just sneak a few photos. He could do more than just hang out and sleep over.
He has access to so much of your life. Your bedroom. Your bathroom. Your day to day. Your food. Your secrets. Hell, if he asked you right now, he’d have unrestricted access to your phone. Rory has all of your trust in a sweet little bow, and he could use that to see even more of you.
Maybe some private messages? See what you get up too with the others in town that somehow earned your grace. See just how weakly they hide behind their masks and how he can get more intel. Surely you don’t actually like these people, right?
Rory feels his fists crunch at his device. White knuckled and vice-like.
The idea that you could hand over your delicate heart to someone in this town…
He won’t allow it. He won't let that happen. You’ll be far away from here with flames in the distance if he had any say in the matter.
There’s a notification on his screen, the banner covering your eyes in one of the more recent photos you two took together. The text reads in all caps “HELLO RORY! WE HAVE YOUR PRESCRIPTION READY AT-” and he sighs, clicking it away.
His insomnia meds were ready for pick up. Is it so shocking that someone as stressed as he is constantly needs a bit of help to sleep? He swears it’s not just meds he needs, he needs his life to improve or for something to give. Yet again and again he gets a wet blanket.
Rory starts to mull over a few ideas in his head as he makes his way to town, looking up certain facts about low doses of his medication. Nothing too serious, and dare he say, nothing that would immediately be pointed back at him if you were to be suspicious. Just dry mouth, odd dreams, maybe some sleep walking…
He’s greeted with a sweet text from you asking where he is. The soft smile that crosses his face is juxtaposed to the thoughts running through his head as he tells the pharmacy tech a quick thanks.
“Hey. Meet me at the gas station? We can hang out tonight after some slushies. Just you me and some cheesy horror movies. Sound good?”
