Judging by his outfit in Natlan that seems everlasting and never changing, I like to headcanon that once he travelled to Snezhnaya for whatever research he was into, but forgot that humans are supposed to actually feel cold, so the locals were horrified to see a foreigner casually strolling in the snow in a kimono and gave him some clothes because they were afraid he would die somewhere lol
