Honestly, Shane was a little nervous about this arrangement at first. He didn't know what kind of dynamic might happen, or if it would makes things awkward, but honestly? This has settled into something really nice, something that he really enjoys. If anything, too, it's made his relationship with Ilya that much stronger. Besides, he really likes Troy. It's a win-win.

"Thanks," he says when Troy sets their drinks down, taking a sip and idly scrolling through his phone, blinking when he starts to speak. Shane rests his chin in his hand, glances over at Ilya, then grins.

"You're asking us to go with you? I mean, sure, why not? It's been a little while since Ilya and I have gone anywhere. Where were you thinking?" It would definitely do them some good to get out of Canada for a while, he thinks, especially with all the scrutiny they've been under since Shane joined the Centaurs. "Maybe someplace nice and warm."

"Yeah, I just thought it could be fun." Troy twists his glass around in his hand. Ilya looks at Shane, waiting for his reaction before nodding, mouth full of chips. "Is good idea, Barrett, I need to show off my body and get tan."

Troy snorts out a laugh, taking a drink from his soda. "I was thinking Spain? I found a nice resort that's near the beach, has like five different pools, a spa, and this gym that looks out over the ocean." He grabs his phone, flicks to the website to find it, and hands it over to them so they can see. "And I was thinking we could get an apartment, that way you guys would have your own space." He's conscious of the fact that they're going to want to spend time together away from him. Last thing Troy wants is to be that annoying dick on holiday who won't fuck off. "I thought two weeks? I also found some activities and excursions I thought you two might like; I'll put them into the group chat." Most of them had been recommendations from his mom - She'd recently travelled there. He'd tried to ignore her quizzing about who he was going with, but the stupid doe-eyed look on his face probably gave him away. "What do you think?"

"Jesus, Rozanov. What was that about a night off?"

Really, Shane should've known better, and maybe that's on him for thinking he could go a single night, hell, a handful of hours without following Ilya around like his shadow. He shoves his gun in the holster, kneeling down behind Ilya to pick the lock on the cuffs that bind his hands together.

"Your dad's gonna kill me, probably," he mutters under his breath, sucking on his teeth. "What do you think? You think he'll make it quick if I get you out of here in one piece?" The handcuffs are stubborn, but they eventually clatter to the ground as Shane gets them off. "Oh! Ha, your mouth is taped. No wonder you're so quiet. Help me with these damn ropes a little, huh?"

Ilya mutters against the tape, a soft little growl of annoyance rising in his chest. He hadn't expected anything to go wrong. Maybe that's the problem. He'd let his guard down. His father's going to be fucking furious. One minute he'd been in the club, the next he was in this back room, blood trickling down his temple and Shane stepping over the bodies of the guys who'd taken him.

His whole body aches as he struggles against the ropes. "It's not my fault. They shouldn't have been able to get at me." He mutters when the tape is finally removed, massaging his wrists. He tries to stand but feels dizzy, hand gripping at Shane's arm.

Then stubbornness kicks in. He doesn't want to look weak. "We won't tell my father." He moves to lean against the chair, trying to act like he's not about to collapse. "Is fine. Guy who called you is only one who knows. He won't tell. So we can just forget it happened."

Troy had settled quickly into the arrangement with Ilya and Shane. He hadn't expected to enjoy it this much. Part of him had worried that it would change the friendship, but if anything, it's made things stronger. They're the closest people to him now. He stays up late playing games with Ilya and has quiet time with Shane, building Lego whilst he reads. It really is perfect.

"Here you go -" Troy places the drinks down on the table before tossing a packet of chips at Ilya with a grin. "To keep you quiet for a while."

"So - Uh, there was an idea I wanted to float by you guys." He says, watching as Ilya tears the chips open. "I don't know if it would be weird or too much, but I was thinking about going on vacation now that the season's coming to an end. Don't want to go on my own, so I thought..."

eric gives a curt not, still feeling just the tiniest bit stung at kyle's rejection and he let out a sigh, glancing down at the soda water in his hand and shrugging his shoulders, "i'm not really sure. i was never really a guy who dated around. i guess i should probably figure that out first. i'm probably not anyone's type though." he laughed awkwardly, his hand moving to rub the back of his neck as he looked around the bar.

he'd avoided answering the question directly. he knows he's bisexual, it's something he's been pretty sure of for a long while, but he's not quite ready to say it out loud. especially now that it's clear he doesn't know how to talk to hot men to save his life.

"i see." eric nodded. straight, married or emotionally unavailable. he was pretty sure that didn't describe himself in any way, so that answered his question pretty thoroughly. "maybe it's time for us both to do some figuring things out…" he added and glanced down at his drink before pushing it towards kyle and looking back to where kip had planted himself in scott's lap with a sigh. "no i'm good. i think i'm going to head home. thanks though."

Kyle's brow drops into a little frown as he feels the tone of the conversation change. Fuck. Maybe he'd been too nosy. Too full-on? Realistically, it's none of his fucking business what Eric Bennett's type is. Eyes glance over to Kip and Scott, frowning at the wave of nausea and rejection that's swirling around his stomach.

"Listen, I'm sorry if I said something wrong. Don't go because of me and my big mouth." Kyle doesn't want him to leave. It's a little pathetic how much he wants to cling to this conversation. Day in, day out, he sits there, serving drinks and watching Kip and Scott. Eric has been a welcome distraction. They have similar interests, friendly banter, and he's incredibly easy on the eye - That's hard to come by.

"I was actually -" Should he? Fuck it. "I'm finishing up here in 15 minutes. Let me buy you food as an apology for probing about your love life? There's this new taco truck that opened down the street which does the best vegan burritos."

he's smiling down at his phone, an action that would have embarrassed him a few weeks ago, but it feels good to be excited about something again. something new. something that's just for him.

he knows it's a touchy subject, and kyle hasn't brought it up in a while. selfishly eric hopes he's erased all thoughts of kip from kyle's mind, but he knows it's not was simple as that. kyle had been pining over kip for a long time, and it wasn't as if he and kyle had even solidified what they were, where this was headed. if anywhere. despite the ways eric's imagination had run with it already.

Kyle chews at his lower lip. How does he feel about it?

If he's honest with himself, he hasn't thought about Kip in a while. The pain had slowly eased without him even realising. Eric has been like a balm, soothing the heartache. Eyes flick over to his best friend, to see if any feelings appear. Nothing. A hint of loneliness, but he thinks that's more to do with not having one, moreso than being jealous or pining.

He should say something else. It would be the perfect opportunity to launch into a charming line about how Eric has taken over from Kip. But he feels nervous. He's certain that the goalie doesn't want anything serious with him.

It's actually embarrassing how much Kyle examines the photo, zooming in and grinning to himself. This crush is getting out of hand.

Kyle had thought it would be easy to pretend.

He had thought that he'd be able to keep his heart locked away, to keep things casual and easy. And he really had tried. God, he'd tried. It's the worst feeling in the world, logically trying to convince yourself of something when your heart is yearning in the other direction.

He finds Eric everywhere. In the brushstrokes of paintings and in the taste of vegan tacos. In the bubbles of soda lime and the sound of skates on ice. He cannot do anything without Eric Bennett coming to mind, and it's driving him insane. He can't take it. It's suffocating. He's ruined. And the last time he'd felt like this -

It doesn't bear thinking about. It's locked away deep within Kyle. Yet Eric brings this vulnerability, brings questions and fears and this tempest of emotion that feels like it's about to spill over.

It's how he finds himself on Eric's doorstep on a Sunday night, emboldened by whiskey.

"Why don't you want me?" No 'hello', no small talk, just his eyes furiously glaring. "He didn't want me either. Why? What's wrong with me?" He's never mentioned Ian to Eric. Could never work up the courage. So much of him is broken because of that man. Maybe part of him subconsciously thinks that Eric can see that. "It can't be age. I know men who've had no fucking problem dating younger."

Kyle's been watching the guy for the past half an hour. He sees a lot of lonely people. They drift in and out of the bar like ghosts. Sometimes they meet people for the night; other times they go home alone, returning the next day to repeat the cycle. It's hard. New York's a big city, but it can sometimes be the loneliest place in the world.

"Fancy being my guinea pig?" Kyle slides a cocktail across the bar, placing it in front of him. "It's a new concoction I've been working on. I'm doing a line of drinks based around the hockey players who drink here. You can be the first to test them."
