Surfing in the 2020 Olympics?

The Olympics have always been somewhat of an odd thing for surfers. On one side, there are the people who want it in there, along with all the other summer sports, like running really fast, running really far, jumping into sandpits, jumping over tall bars, and throwing various heavy or pointed objects as far as one can.  Then there are the people who hate the idea of surfing in the Olympics. They argue it is an art form that can’t be judged. 

The International Surfing Association is in the caring very much mind set, which makes perfect sense. It’s been one of their goals from the outset, and Fernando Aguerre, ISA Pres/guy that wears awesome shirts, has his sights set on Tokyo’s 2020 Olympics. The folks on the Olympic committee, though, aren’t exactly convinced. But following a pile of changes in the tail end of last year, there’s a decent chance they might come around. The reforms include making the games more attractive and relevant to a wider and modern audience.

In the past, surfing has been the outcast of the Olympics because of the obvious reasons: contestable surf in many of the locations set for Games just isn’t there. And when even the governing body of professional surfing can’t always guarantee a contest that involves really good waves, the Olympic committee’s point is proven.

But with the advances in wave pool technology snowballing in the last few years, there is a very real possibility of surfing becoming something else entirely: an Olympic sport held outside the ocean in waves that are exactly the same every time–which is exactly what is needed for surfing to be properly judged. 

While Aguerre is right about surfing captivating the hearts and minds of young people, he’s wrong about what surfing in the Olympics would be. It wouldn’t be surfing. It would be surfing in a wavepool–which, while very much a fun idea with implications that will probably have some effect on surfing as we know it right now, it’s not surfing. Surfing needs the ocean. Without it, it’s just riding waves. Where do you stand? Quicksilver; Down But Not Out 2015

It’s big news in an industry that has fallen on tough times and seen other major players experience heavy losses in recent years, however consumers are unlikely to notice a thing; Quiksilver and it’s sibling brands Roxy and DC aren’t going anywhere, this is just the latest stage (and a very headline grabbing one) in an ongoing internal restructuring of the business. The chapter 11 filing is only for Quiksilver’s U.S. operations, as its European and Asia-Pacific businesses remain strong, and account for over half of the brand’s sales.

“After careful consideration, we have taken this difficult but necessary step to secure a bright future for Quiksilver,”said Pierre Agnes, Chief Executive Officer of Quiksilver.“With the protections afforded by the Bankruptcy Code and the financing provided by Oaktree, we will not only be able to satisfy our ongoing obligations to customers, vendors and employees, but we will also have the flexibility needed to complete the turnaround of our U.S. operations and re-establish Quiksilver as the leader in the action sports industry. Our fresh capital structure, with a very low level of debt for our industry, will enable us to invest in and reinvigorate our brands and products. We are confident we will emerge a stronger business, better positioned to grow and prosper into the future.”

Hopefully, when this is all done and dusted, they can get back to business and we can reap the benefits. Like them or loathe them, Quiksilver is an iconic company within surfing, and it’d be a shame to lose them. A true Comeback Story; Jeremy Flores Takes Tahitian Crown

This week we, at RipIt Vids, were moved by Jeremy Flores preformance in Tahiti. Helmeted and charging straight from his injury, Flores triumphs over Gabriel Medina in the finals of The Billabong Pro Tahiti. 

Talk about loving what you do, Jeremy Flores risked his life for the sport this last week and became an inspiration for surfers around the world. Despite a recent and severe head injury and countless “no’s” from family, friends, doctors and not to mention his freshly crushed brain, Flores gave in to temptation and booked a last minute ticket to Tahiti to compete in the 2015 Billabong Pro. 

With the protection of a helmet, Jeremy faced fierce competition and some of the trickiest barrels Teahupo’o has seen in a competition for some time. Two waves was all it took for Jeremy to take the final against Gabriel Medina. Scoring a 9.87 right off the bat accompanied by a solid 7 backup, he positioned himself for success. It paid off, Jeremy took home his first win since 2010 and first event back from his injury.

Loved seeing everyone at the US Open!

Today wrapped up the final day of the US open in Huntington Beach, California. The competition ended in an action packed final and festival attracting around an estimated 75,000 people from across the West Coast. 200 surfers around the world were whittled down throughout the nine days of the event. 

Two underdogs took home the main titles this afternoon bringing the annual event to a close. French native Johanne Defay took home her first world victory title against Australian veteran Sally Fitzgibbon. On the mens front Hiroto Ohhara became the first Japanese surfer to ever bring home a US Open title. Small surf conditions as well as long lulls caused frustration and struggles among the more experienced surfers that were dropped from the competition throughout the day.

The vibe at the event was more family-friendly this year in comparison to years past with less people in attendance and more respect for the surfing culture and sport rather than the party scene. The mellow and relaxed vibe allowed for us at RipIt Vids to meet and interact with many of the event’s attendees. We loved the opportunity to share our excitement about our revolutionary GoPro editing app. We would like to extend a thank you to those of you we had the chance of meeting and talking with.  We truly appreciate all of the support and shared excitement about our application and the social surfing world.
