Take this with a Weapon-sized grain of salt, but here’s an intriguing detail I noticed while digging through my old notes for writings.

In the Before Crisis trailer, Judy, aka agent Martial Arts, uses an ability similar to Loz’s from Advent Children.

Both glow in similar blue-purpleish colors while performing it, and Loz repeats Judy’s move almost frame by frame when he attacks Cloud.

My notes say that the Before Crisis Ultimania describes Judy as a highly skilled fighter capable of taking on multiple enemies at once and leaving them all beaten in literal moments. Loz uses his ability to dodge bullets and Cloud’s attacks alike, which sounds like the means to do exactly what Judy’s description implies. Don’t take my word for it, though, because I couldn’t pull up the exact quote from the Ultimania. If anyone recognizes what I’m talking about and can share it, please do—I’d really appreciate it.

Still, if that implication is indeed there, I wonder: could the remnants have been trained in VR using the Turks’ training-session data back when Hojo was experimenting on them in Nibelheim? If so, Loz may have obtained the ability from Judy.

That said, while in Judy’s case this is 100% a Materia effect; a Cover, to be precise, as it suits her specialty best and explains teleports (Deadly Dodge wasn't invented back then).

Loz is Sephiroth’s remnant, meaning he’s too special for standard lore explanations to apply neatly. He first uses this ability to one-shot Tifa in the church, well before the remnants equip any Materia.

It could also be tied to his Dual Hound, much like weapon-based abilities in the Remake series, but I doubt that system was on the developers’ minds back then. Another possibility is that Loz just casually grabbed a Cover Materia somewhere in the Northern Crater, and that’s that, but I don’t think I’ve ever stumbled upon anything like this in the novels or official sources.

That’s the thought I’d like to entertain.

The BC Turks have official names?

[ooc] Yes and no. Some of them have now been revealed to have official names, the first being Cissnei with the overseas release of Crisis Core. Though we initially knew her name as “Shisuné” with some of the fan translations we were getting from Before Crisis, it was when Crisis Core was released that we learned the official spelling was Cissnei. The same name, spelling corrected.

Back when Before Crisis first came out, a lot of the fans assigned names to the characters, most of them popularized by the well-known and highly revered fansite for Before Crisis: Gunshot Romance. [I have recently checked and it seems the site has been frozen or taken down. I’m unaware of the reason why since I’ve been out of the fandom for a while due to real life issues, but back when Before Crisis first came out, it was practically the place for all our translations and information on BC, characters included. It was the first known location where character bios for the BC Turks were ever posted, and one of the two places I took character bios from to write out my fuller bios for the BC Turks, taking hints from the way each location described the Turks to try to analyze and garner as much about each character as I could.]

This is the full list of the fan names given to the Before Crisis Turks by Gunshot Romance’s site:

Rod (Male): St. Andrew

Gun (Female): Rosalind

Two Guns (Male): Rafe

Shotgun (Female): Samantha

Martial Arts Male: Durman

Martial Arts Female: Cyr

Katana (Male): Adrian

Shuriken (Female): Tegwin

Nunchucks (Male): Corin

Knife (Female): Violet

Legend (Male): Claude

Now, as I said, I’ve been a bit out of the fandom for a while, so if we’ve had any new reveals on name canon, I might not be aware of them. However, I do know a few of the BC Turks have had their names confirmed canonically at this point in time thanks to the production sketches of Studio MadHouse, who produced Final Fantasy VII: Last Order, so here are those updates. (Shuriken and Katana’s names are the only known names [I believe] that are confirmed in Before Crisis’s gameplay itself.)

Rod (Male): Alvis

Gun (Female): Emma

Two Guns (Male): Ruluf

Shotgun (Female): Freyra

Martial Arts Male: Maur

Martial Arts Female: Juget/Judet (Both are apparently listed as her possible name.)

Katana (Male): Balto

Shuriken (Female): Cissnei

Insofar, no canon names have been given to Nunchucks, Knife, or Legend. They are the remaining Before Crisis Turks who have only a fan name attached to them for identification.

Hope this helps with some of your confusion on all the names these characters have.
