The time, the mid- ‘forties; the place, the El Morocco and the girl- Rita Hayworth. One evening, the story goes, Hayworth came in and moved to her table, the focus of all eyes. Nearby a jealous rival turned to her roving-eyed escort and inquired what he saw in Rita. After all, Grable had better legs. He agreed. “Lamarr is much more beautiful.” He nodded. “Lots of girls have better bodies and Ginger is a better dancer.” “Yup.” “Besides,” the actress threw in caustically, “she wasn’t born a red head.” Still eyeing Rita at her table, he assented. “So,” she repeated sourly, “what’s so special about her?” He thought, then said: “I guess it’s the way it all hangs together.”
