Rain for Cosmopolitan Korea’s May 2016 Issue
BENJAMIN.
“ that is a very strange way of complimenting my cooking skills, sir, ” benjamin muttered, a frown painting his features teasingly. he crossed his arms over his chest, before looking down at his dish. certainly, it hadn’t looked appetizing. nor had he expected it to. “ look, i tried something new, and it didn’t work out. ”
“Sorry, yeah no it’s-” River didn’t want to be a dream crusher and insult his students, but as he looked for another word, BAD was the only one that stuck out. “You took a chance, and that’s good, making mistakes is good.” The home ec teacher took a large swig from his water bottle to wash the taste away. After all, he was surprised and even a little proud of his student; he’d simply requested the class make their favorite food, or something they liked to make, and yet he’d tried something he’d never done before. That was impressive. “You’ll get better at... What exactly was this supposed to be?”
KENZIE.
“Yeah, I know. Ask me to make lasagna or burgers or anything normal and I’m golden. The minute you bring baking into it, it’s like I’m reading hieroglyphs instead of a recipe,” Kenzie explained, knowing it had to be bad.
“Don’t worry about it too much,” River responded, taking a moment to tap the supposed pastry on the plate. It made a dull thumping sound, indicating that it was rock solid, but the teacher was far from angry. He was still quite new to Westmount, which meant he still hadn’t truly gotten to know his students’ weaknesses and strong points; those who gave his class enough weight to even try, that is. “I was the same, but like, completely opposite when I first went into culinary school. I was always so good at desserts, but the second something savory came up, I overcooked and underseasoned.” He chuckled a bit, nodding towards the dish. “It was a good try, better than a lot of your classmates cared to do.” With a soft sigh, the teacher glanced towards the stack of empty plates that should’ve had something on them.
HARRISON.
Harrison shuddered at the thought “Im actually relieved I don’t have to constantly eat high schoolers’ cooking” he chuckled
“I was actually pretty surprised by a lot of them. I can’t say I really expected many to possess natural cooking talent.” River chuckled, half at the other male’s response and half at his own stupidity for judging the kids too quickly. “I was pleasantly surprised, though.”
“you are annoying.” clara frowns, her hands going to the hips as she speaks, her carry on abandoned next to her. before sighing a little and nodding. “busan. that’s where i am from. not this cesspit. american.” she replies. wrinkling her nose. before laughing a little. “no. i just arrive. not know where to go. no schedule yet. you my guide as here?”
River was a bit taken aback by the student’s icy response, and the insult she threw at him, but he never had very much of a temper. Besides, he couldn’t blame her for being homesick, and it was always difficult being in a new place. “Busan? I hear the beaches are pretty there. America isn’t all that bad, though. I promise.” He attempted another polite smile, one that he was almost certain she wouldn’t return. “Uh, no. Not a guide. I’m a teacher; Home Economics. I could help you get your schedule, though.”
DECLAN.
“No? But that must be the best part about being a home ec teacher,” Declan replied playfully, tilting his head to one side. “Yeah, seasoned hay seems about right… If it were me, I’d probably buy some pretzel sticks from Auntie Annie’s and turn those in. That place is good,” he said with a sigh of content, although he didn’t let himself have it often. “You know, I am definitely willing to do that, as long as you can guarantee I won’t die of food poisoning.” He joked, eyes flickering over the dishes around the room. “So do you like, just eat your students’ cooking for meals sometimes? Because that’s definitely a way to save money. Well, money you’d probably just end up spending on doctor’s fees,” he mused, looking back towards the “seasoned hay”. “Declan,” the Aussie introduced himself, shaking the other’s hand with a light smile. “Nice to meet you, mate. You’re new here, right?”
“No thanks, man. One of my professors in culinary school was like that, I swore after the first time he stepped on my food that I would never be that guy, ya know?” River listened to the man, laughing amused as he explained what he would do. “I have to say, I was kind of expecting something like that, but I think only a couple of people bought their food. Some just didn’t turn anything in at all, I don’t know which is worse,” He explained with a playful smile. “I don’t THINK you’ll die, but if you do, I’ll be sure to seek compensation.” River replied with a playful grin. “Nah, I mean maybe if I was still a bachelor and on the go a lot I might, but my little girls at home are spoiled on my cooking, they don’t even like getting fast food or pizza.” River had a habit of talking too much, rambling on, especially if you got him talking about his kids. He noticed he was doing this and tried to stop, taking Declan’s introduction as the cue. “Oh, yeah, a few days in, actually. Is it that obvious?”
ADRIEN.
“you can-” adrien started to tell the teacher that he can spit it out but it was too late. “i warned you that i can’t cook. i burnt water trying to make mac and cheese once. really, i think i’m doomed for microwave dinners for the rest of my life.”
“No it-it’s not that bad...” River knew that he’d been quick to insult the dish and that was wrong of them. “What exactly is it?” It was a somewhat humorous situation and question to ask the student, but he honestly couldn’t tell from looking at the plate. “Well, hey, it’s a good thing you’re in my class, because this is going to be a thing of the past. And microwave dinners, too.”
SULLY.
“ i’m not much of a chef, mr. kim, ” sully shrugged, raising an eyebrow at the plate of sludge he’d thrown together and called macaroni. a true yankee fuckin’ doodle, sans feather. “ the only person at home who cooks it our chef and she just yells at me in russian if i ever look at her so now i hate food and all those associated with it. it gives me hives. ”
“Well...” River trailed off as he poked at the dish with his fork, eyebrows raised as it squished inwards then, as if made of elastic, snapped back to it’s original position. “The good news is that it’s surprisingly not the worst I’ve ever seen. The bad news is that thanks to your mean, Russian chef, you ‘hate food’. That’s kinda why I’m here, though. Hopefully I’ll be able to change your mind.”
DECLAN.
Declan couldn’t help but smirk in amusement as he watched the teacher painfully force down the food, biting on his lip. “Someone’s getting an F, huh?” Leaning over, he looked at the dish curiously. “Um.. is that chicken? Please tell me it’s chicken.” Looking around the room at some of the other wrapped up plates that he assumed the teacher had yet to try, he licked his lips. “Did you give them a lesson on brownies, or cake or something, by chance? I’m in more of a dessert mood.”
River had noticed he’d caught the attention of a passerby, a member of the staff seemed like. “Yeah, not exactly. I mean, I promised they wouldn’t exactly be graded this go around given it was their first assignment, but this is definitely F worthy. I’m not gonna go all Gordon Ramsay on these kids yet, though.” The former chef watched as the stranger inspected the dish. “Yeah, you know, I think it might’ve been chicken at one time, but it kind of tastes like seasoned hay at this point.” He chuckled, shaking his head. “They tried, though. At least that’s a plus. Some of the students didn’t even turn anything in.” Glancing around the room at the dishes upon dishes wrapped up and labelled, he nodded. “I kinda just told them to make whatever they were most comfortable with, or their favorite food. There’s plenty of sweets, I’m sure. And they’re all labelled, so you know, if you’d like to give me a hand in trying some of them, I’d be grateful.” River was always one to strike up a conversation, but he was glad that for once, he didn’t have to. “River.” He said in introduction, holding out a hand for the man to shake.
“This is.. Wow.. Okay- Um, this is not good. At all.” River had already practically choked on his student’s first dish, but at first he’d tried to conceal his discomfort. That was until the strange aftertaste crept on to his tongue, and had him cringing with the best of them. His face scrunched, no matter how hard he tried to keep it together. The teacher was eventually able to swallow the questionable grub, when he then let out a small cough before clearing his throat. “Well, I suppose I didn’t expect culinary genius right off the bat, but this... Wow.”
“Yes I’ve seen Frozen more times than I can count but does that mean I think it’s the best Disney movie of all time? Absolutely not. It doesn’t even make my top five. It has a great soundtrack, sure but, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid are far better movies… what do you think?”
“My daughters both love Frozen, so I’ve probably seen the movie a million times. I bet I could sing all the songs by heart, by now. For me, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the best, but the themes are a little too heavy for my little girls, so I have to watch that one on my own. But you’d really pick Aladdin or the Little Mermaid over Tarzan?” The Home Ec teacher scoffed with a playful shake of his head, “What is wrong with you?”
“I already do not like it here.” Clara said with a glare up at the building. “Korea was better. What is this place even called?”
“Just a guess, but I’m thinking it’s Westmount. You know, by all the signs and stuff.” River chuckled amused as he approached the student. “You miss Korea? My family’s from there. I’ve only been a couple of times to visit relatives, but it seems like a nice place.” He suddenly remembered, as he often forgot, that he was talking to a student. “Hey, shouldn’t you be in class by now?”
“I don’t understand how students think using google translate will give them the right translation, like I can tell you cheated, some of these don’t even translate properly” he mumble to himself, rubbing his temples
“I couldn’t imagine being any sort of foreign language teacher, since there’s all those kinds of shortcuts these days. But hey, at least all you have to do is slap an F on the paper. I have to literally eat some of my students’ assignments and let me tell you, I’ll know if they failed.”
