Reading Rivers

Driving a car safely involves much more than simply focusing only as far ahead as the taillights of the car in front of you. The same goes for “reading” a river beyond the bow of your canoe or kayak. Even familiar waterways can have extensive swings in their personality and landscape that constantly require paddlers to sharpen their on-water“reading” skills.

Stream channels and river bends mean we need to anticipate, read and respond to visual clues upon short notice. Some of those warning/caution signs are:

Safety Precautions for Kayaking

Any time you head out on the water, bringing the essential gear and clothing is important. A few additional safety measures are also in order on a non-guided tour:

Bring a paddling buddy.

Make a togetherness pact.

Know your distance limit.

Do your hazard research.

Know your water temp.

Check your PFD.

Be cautious about using a spray skirt.

Don’t forget your whistle.

Tips for Your First Time Kayaking

Planning your first non-guided outing? Make things easy on yourself:

·         Choose a small, calm body of water. Lakes or ponds with little or no powerboat traffic are ideal.

·         Find a gently sloping sandy beach to launch. Steep, mucky and rocky shorelines will be more challenging.

·         Go on a sunny, windless day. You’ll keep complications low and comfort high.

·         If it’s breezy, start out by paddling into the wind. Paddling into a headwind on your way back is a struggle; paddling with a tailwind is, well, a breeze.

·         Plan on an outing, not an expedition. For an optimum fun to fatigue ratio, keep your paddling time under two hours.

Each type of water: whether expansive oceans and lakes or meandering streams and rivers – have their own unique hazards that challenge the paddler. Some are natural such as currents, rip tides, rocks, reefs, narrowing channels, winds and myriad natural obstacles (surface and submerged). Other hazards are man-made (dams, weirs, spillways, structure abutments, stump fields, barge wake) that can also cause the flowing waters to act in ways that can be very dangerous to paddlers of all skill levels.
