Don Marinelli
Frequently I receive emails with introductions to Pittsburghers whom the submitters believe would be perfect for Pittsburgh Stories, and this is how I came to know super Pirate fan Don Marinelli. After studying acting as an undergraduate in Florida, Don moved to Pittsburgh in 1975 to earn his Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Duquesne University, which led to doctoral studies in theatre at Pittsburgh University. That completed, he joined Carnegie Mellon University’s Drama program. For 31 years Don was a theatre professor at CMU where Randy Pausch and Don created the university’s Entertainment Technology Center. As a thespian, Don “loves to live in an Alternative Reality,” so it isn’t difficult to imagine that his avatar is a Pirate… Born in New York, Don was raised a Yankee fan, and though his family moved to Florida when he was ten he maintained his passion for baseball and his team by attending Yankee Spring training games in Fort Lauderdale. While living in Florida Don grew to love the Caribbean, so when he moved to Pittsburgh it was only natural that he fell in love with the Pirates. He has been a season ticket holder for over 20 years, and was one of the first to come to the ballpark clad in pirate garb. Through thick and a lot more thin he will always be a passionate Buccaneer fan, and as he claims “the true test of a Pirate is his loyalty.”
Note: By far this was the most difficult Pittsburgh Story photograph I’ve attempted to pull off. The idea was first conceived last fall when Don and I met, however we had to wait until late spring before we could put our plan into action. Besides finding an evening that fit everyone’s schedule we had to contend with Pittsburgh’s monsoon season and wait for a few days when the weather and river calmed. In addition to Don’s rowboat, which I rented off Craig’s List, there were 2 other boats involved. Accompanied by Don’s wife, Jan Grice, I was in, friend and fellow photographer, David Kelly’s boat. My assistant, Tim Cox, was in Josh Gettig’s boat manning the light source. Navigating the 3 boats into position while grappling with the Allegheny’s strong current and wakes created by other boaters was a Keystone cop nightmare, and I was lucky to get a photograph. In addition, in full Pirate gear Don had to endure a hot humid evening while balancing himself so not to become a man overboard. Meanwhile the Pirates were playing the Brewers and one of the outfield cameramen directed his lens upon us, and in the middle of our shoot David received a text from his mother informing us that we had been on TV. Besides my gratitude to David, Josh, Tim, and Don, I must give a huge shout out to my Intern, Michael Kropiewnicki, Don's first mate who, with only one eye, had to row the boat backwards.
