Hey, with DACA being back in the news do y’all think you can help someone who’s actually effected by it? Emilio has been through a lot in the past year trying to get their situation handled so any help you could provide would go a long way!
[Heya. My name is Emilio Villafana. I’m a twice recipient of DACA. I did a previous fundraiser last year in an effort to beat the October 5th deadline for the final round of renewals and new applications for the DACA program before efforts are made to overturn it.
The money I raised put food in my belly, helped me with transportation, keep a roof over my head, and pay bills. I cannot thank the people who donated and shared my fundraiser page enough. Thanks to the efforts of these people and organizations that offered assistance to DACA recipients in paying for the renewal filing fees, I was able to beat the October 5th deadline by 2 days.
The paperwork was sent back and I’ve been in limbo for the last few months, but a recent decision was made to allow DACA renewals again. As of now, that’s not guaranteed to last and attacks on DACA are not likely to stop. DACA provides temporary protection from deportation and provides enough documentation to allow beneficiaries to work, but not much more. Those only last 2 years and if the program is eliminated then renewal won’t be possible once things expire.
Fortunately, I have a petition in with immigration and an attorney prepared to file on my behalf for an adjustment of status (translation: a green card, and a chance to apply for full citizenship after a 5-year waiting period).
I’ll need at least $1,500 to initiate the next part of the process according to my attorney. The trouble is that I’m currently without a stable shelter. I’ve been couchsurfing for months and recently took the blow of having my DACA papers returned. Returning home is not an option for me, as I’ve currently got a job ITP Atlanta and my home is too far, on top of being an unsafe place for me to be. You can read the previous fundraiser page for more details there.
With the money I’m making from my job and due to my housing situation being as unstable as it is, I’m looking at making a choice between stability and a secure future with greater opportunities right now. I can put money toward an apartment and bills or resolving my immigration troubles. Again, my work permit expires in February and I’m being stretched thin.
What I’m asking for from you is to help me bring this situation out of the realm of ridiculousness. Every dollar you donate will go directly to the money used to pay for my legal fees. With the money earned from my work, if I don’t manage to make the full amount through this fundraiser, I can at least attempt to survive in this manner for another month or two and combine what I can save away from living expenses to have enough to pay the fees by February.
My driver’s license and work permit expire the same day. Once that happens, I immediately lose my ability to work legally, file taxes, my deportation protection, and I will become a larger target for abuse and violence at the hands of ICE and local law enforcement. I’ll likely be forced to move back into my family home, where I will face abuse.
If I can manage to get my petition in in time, I may have to stop working for some time, but I can expect another work permit shortly, and stabler legal status than I’ve incurred in my entire life and can build my way toward naturalization.]
[UPDATE: 1/30/2018]
Today is Emilio’s birthday! So far they’ve only raised $415 out of the $2,000 they need to get their paperwork handled, please keep boosting this and let’s see if we can give them a wonderful birthday present!!!

His song about a woman's body beat Kesha's ballad about overcoming rape.
There’s nothing quite like a catchy but fairly mediocre pop track about being in love with the literal physical outline of an unknown woman’s body, sung by British everyman and erstwhile Game of Thrones cast member Ed Sheeran, taking the trophy for Best Pop Solo Performance at the Grammys to hammer home the values of the world we currently live in.
The category’s other contenders — Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, P!nk and Kesha — provided fierce competition not only vocally, but lyrically, touching on themes of political division, strength in the face of heartbreak and how to forgive your rapist.
Many expected (or hoped) Kesha would take home the prize for her incredible vocal performance with “Praying.” Not only did “Praying” show off vocal ability even few diehard fans knew Kesha possessed, with entire Youtube reaction videos dedicated to people crying immediately upon hearing her hit the track’s climactic high note/otherworldly whistle, but the song is also particularly timely, with its themes of overcoming a relationship of sexual and emotional abuse.
Given that Sheeran wasn’t even in attendance to accept the award, it’s a shame to think of the missed opportunity the moment could have been, had it been used to shine a light on a more meaningful winner.
