River attending the 61st Annual Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon on March 21, 1989.Â
The River Phoenix I will remember is the gentle young man I met three years ago at a grape boycott rally in front of a supermarket in Miami. He had already had a brilliant career as an actor, was on the cover of all the teen magazines and had just been nominated for an Oscar. His clothes looked fresh, his hair was creasedâapparently from wearing a baseball capâand he wore a small, St. Francis-style wooden cross around his neck.
I wondered what this Hollywood star was doing at a modest little rally in Miami on that day, with no sign of any young fans around, just a few dozen middle-aged do-gooders like myself. He had been fasting for the grape-picker cause, and he gave a little talk over a megaphone that ended with âGod bless you.â He hugged a Mexican American next to him, to whom he passed along his fast.
How strange to hear that he left us in the middle of the night in front of a Sunset Strip nightclub.
RICHARD RALEIGH Dania, Fla. The LA Times, November 1993
âItâs really designed, I think, to strip you and blend you. Itâs like feeling like the invisible man. You just stand there, and you start disintegrating, and you canât see yourself, and you just feel like youâre being absorbed into this big blob of glitter. I just canât hangâ
- River Phoenix (on Hollywood)
âHe knows his mind and speaks it, even if what he says doesnât fit in with his peers. You could call River the ultimate individualist. A vegan in the day of McDonalds, a pacifist in the era of nuclear weaponsâ - Teen Beat, 1988
My Own Private Idaho (1991) // Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1993)
My aesthetic is Gus Van Sant in the â90s making the Phoenixes play LGBTQ+ characters in different movies, happy pride!
âSuddenly, River was a Hollywood name and girls everywhere were falling for his cherubic good looks. But the young actor was determined not to let success go to his head. âPeople get lost,â he said. âThey think they have it under control, and their lives are in pieces.ââ
