HE SHOULD'VE KNOWN that she wouldn't miss a beat. if she could rile him up, she would, but he was too busy mapping out every allotted amount of time he could offer her to barrel through the long yard down towards the lake before he eventually tackled her to the ground. she might be right. he isn't as fast as he used to be. a morning run isn't always the first thing on his agenda, even if the does accompany her and shep more often than not. it's evident in the teasing glimmer reflecting between husband and wife's eyes that their kids learned precisely how to get beneath their parents skin from no one other than each other— and aaron follows cali's lead and gives them another lesson in how to do so: ❝   but do you take shep for a run or does shep take you, cal?   ❞ this time, HE SQUEEZES HER CALF.

the OOOOOH's grew in crescendo. down by the water, the waves lap against the dock like they're calling to be ran towards. despite putting the phone face down onto the table it continues to play and the laughter echoes when the man in the video tackles his wife to the ground. but all he can do is grin. STUPIDLY, with bright eyes. easily, this is rylan's fault; the kids sitting around the table all wearing some form of disgruntled horror, piqued interest and varying minutia's of mischief. some would say it's cleo's. the oldest boy and youngest girl. the two of them always in tandem. but as aaron taps at her leg, picking it up to pluck it off him and telling his wife to ❝   alright, come on, then-   ❞ as he stands from the wicker bench they ALWAYS made their own ... he'd claim what's about to happen next on that subdued playfulness he loves to see so much in the jade green of his wife's eyes. from beneath the table charlie barks, furry tail wagging against the porch. of course shep awaits even the slightest of movement from calista.

❝   up. get up. we're doing this, mrs. hotchner.   ❞ the influence of the soon to be setting sun has made him a little more wild. less inhibited. he holds out both hands to help her rise from their bench. ❝   what're the rules?   ❞ aaron asks, TO THE KIDS. though he hasn't taken his eyes off cali's. "she gets a ten second head start." cleo reminds them. camden picks his head up from his book, suddenly more invested. novel replaced with his phone as he pulls the timer app up. "i'll time it." which the whole table erupts laughing at because out of the five of them— camden jayce was always the least likely to partake in their antics. ❝   hear that, babe? ten seconds ...   ❞ now it's him egging her on, because they're IN THIS TOGETHER NOW. ( together & always! ) ruby retrieves her own cellphone to declare, "and i'll videotape it."

" well if you joined us more often you'd know, babe. " she counters quickly, smartly, their kids OOOOH's growing all the louder. she knows what he's doing, holding her gaze and grasping at the muscle of her calf- and just because she can, cali nudged his shoulder with the knee of her bent leg, a half-hearted kick.

her mouth drops open as he taps at her leg, lifts it up and drops it just as smoothly to stand, looming over her. she's grinning as she looks up at him. " what?! " voice strained as she listens to the cheers of their children, their eldest son's egging immediately switching parent as he crows 'YEAH, SHOW HIM MOM!' - ruby telling him he's going to flip over the chair has her eyes drifting from aaron's to pin on the precariously balanced form of rylan and all she has to do is raise a brow for him to slink back down from sitting up on the backrest to actually sit in the seat, as it was intended to be used. " i don't remember agreeing to this, " she protested, not because she didn't want to, but because she wasn't about to make this easy on her little enablers, or their father. charlie bounds out from under the table to stand at aaron's side, his tail wagging back and forth with a force that could be truly concerning ... if they weren't well used to the antics of their golden by now.

nevertheless, she holds out her palm to the side, where flynn is sat CROSS-LEGGED on the ground beside shep, and he takes the last three apple slices from her so she can put her hands in her husband's and let him haul her up to stand in front of him. " oh, there’s rules now … " cali rolled her eyes, mumbling under her breath- and only he could hear her this time- " i’ve never needed ten seconds before. " once she’s up she holds onto his hands for a half-minute longer than necessary before she twists to slip passed him. shep stands TO FOLLOW and she crouches down in front of her oldest baby, her fingers sinking into the fur around his neck. “ stay. “ she tells him and he huffs before reluctantly sitting, still on guard, eyes watching as she turns to point at her husband. “ shoes off, hotchner. unfair advantage. “

THE FACT REMAINED: they were baiting him, & he knows it. yet, he's victim to it all the same.

❝   show her,   ❞ snagging the phone from rylan's hand, aaron holds it up for cali to watch as she rejoins them in the seating area just outside the lake house. the video plays. the tag line reading ... SEEING IF MY EX-POLICE OFFICER HUSBAND CAN CATCH ME IN A FOOT PURSUIT. cleo's laugh echoes through the yard, as if the lake itself took the sound and shot it right back at them. "rylan's got dad allllllll bent out of shape," she tells their mother. "you know that's what he's doing, right, dad?" hotch puts a finger to his lips as finally the ex-police officer husband in question playfully tackles his wife to the ground in a winning show of his line of profession and adoration for said wife. ❝   not the point.   ❞ HE CONCLUDES. because of course he knows. but it doesn't disprove the theory that he is more than capable of catching calista in a foot pursuit. "guess the point is if mom thinks you can..." rylan eggs on, squirting gatorade down his throat with a look between both of his parents. hotch eyes cali. a brow furrowing. ❝   well, cal?   ❞

﹙ —#𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎— ﹚ ˑ ˑ ˑ ﹐ their voices drift from outside, in through the open doors and windows to where she's cutting up an apple in the kitchen. it doesn't take much to tell her that her children are up to no good, no doubt provoking their father in to some ridiculous viral act that they've shared in the group chat- cali can only smirk knowingly, eyes rising to her family all gathered on the back porch as she carries her slices in the palm of her hand and joins them, SHEP FOLLOWING AT HER HEEL. she slips easily into the space beside aaron, legs curling up and feet tucking under his thigh with her back against the wicker armrest behind her. her eyes are already drawn to the video before she settles completely. a furrow forms between her brow as she leans forward, picking up a slice and biting off a corner as she watches the clip play out. and she smiles, suppressed laugh in the inflection of her voice as she hummed. " oh, yeah- i've seen that one. " spoken offhandedly, casual and unintentional in THE CHALLENGE she can already see gleaming in cleo's eyes and the ANSWERING RISE in aaron's. cali raised a brow at their son and his egging ... " ry- " but she knows it's already too late. her husband has fallen for their children's provocation hook, line and sinker. offering him the uneaten half of her apple slice, calista sunk back into the shared loveseat and stretched one leg out over his lap, the other still bent upward at the knee as she asks- " well, what? "

faux innocence shines in her green stare fixed on the returning gaze of former federal agent aaron hotchner, and she picks up another slice to bite into. " babe ... " she addresses, deciding she may as well play too. " shep and i run EVERY day. " said pointedly. and she bites into her new slice, hiding her growing smirk as the kids all react with varying levels of 'ooooooh' ... at the sound of his name, shep lifts his head from where he's laying on the floor in front of her and she drops her hand to scratch at his head with her pinkie, a handful of fruit pieces still cradled in her palm. cali shrugged. " hate to break it to you honey, but you're not as fast as you used to be ... " and just to soothe what she's sure is A BLOW TO HIS EGO, cali tossed the last of her slice into her mouth and reached out with her now free hand to squeeze his shoulder comfortingly. " stamina does not equal speed, hotchner. " spoken quietly, but not quietly enough- if the 'UGH, MOM!' and the '... EW-' were any indication. but if she's going to entertain their goading their father, she's going to traumatise them in equal measure. it's only fair. cali rolled her eyes, picking up another slice out of her palm to bite into.
