My first thought is to laugh at them for getting what they deserve. But this really is cult dynamics in play. Terf ideology makes people behave in ways that will make others socially reject them (and don’t get me wrong, they are completely justified in doing so for their own wellbeing). So, they go back to their terf circles, which offer an outpouring of sympathy and support, reassuring them that though the world may be a cruel place, they are right in what they do, it’s everyone else who is misguided and wrong etc. etc., and the “cruel rejection” from others is “proof”. It has terfs feeling like an oppressed minority, and it feeds on their fear that “the patriatchy”, “the agenda”, whatever, is out to get them. Weaponised fear and ignorance, basically.

I don’t know quite what my point is here. It’s certainly not “The power of friendship will fix it! Befriend a Terf today!” But I’m trying to think of what I would do if I found out somebody I cared about had been radicalised that way, and I think the answer probably isn’t to immediately go on the offensive or cut them off with no explanation. Not everyone can be deradicalised, of course, but I like to think that I would try to help them get out of that situation if I could.

Again, the above hypothetical is in relation to someone I already cared about and valued having in my life. Casual acquaintances spouting bullshit? Hell no, block and ignore all the way.

i've seen it several times, that a terf gets offline, gets a hobby, and gradually is rehabilitated. they spend all their time keeping themselves in a loop of rage because rage is addictive, and if you break the cycle, a lot of them will end up like. "oh, this isn't a big deal" and move on. i follow this really cool ex-terf radfem on twitter and her threads have really enlightened me as to how the terf circles are just full of women re-traumatising each other and validating each other's victimhood over and over again.

these people believe women are inherently innocent and men are inherently guilty, abusive, rapists. but only AMAB/AFAB. So they're terrified of men, and keep validating that fear because whenever they're outspoken they get attacked.

They genuinely believe every threat they get over the internet is a genuine person with plans and means to kill them.

It's a shit situation and i don't have a solution. :/

listen to me. thoughts do not have moral weight. a thought will never hurt anyone. the actions you take because of a thought can hurt yourself or other people, but the thought itself is powerless and there is no such thing as thought crime.

"but i have thoughts about being violent towards people! towards children! surely that makes me dangerous!" are you being violent? for real? with your actions? if not, then you are not actually hurting anyone

"but i have thoughts that are offensive and hurtful! they're bigoted, or they're horribly rude, or they're invalidating to others! i'm a horrible person." and what are you doing with those thoughts, exactly? are you taking bigoted actions, or saying those rude things, or taking steps to actually invalidate people? no? well then. no one is getting hurt. and in the meantime, if it really bothers you, doing things like helping unlearn your biases (both against minorities and just, like, against furries and theatre kids and shit) might help some of those thoughts go away, but sometimes you just get shitty thoughts.

"but i have horrific thoughts about sex!" are you hurting people. are you forcing people to do things they don't consent to. or are you just playing the upsetting possibility in your mind over and over again, and acting like that's even remotely the same thing?

thought. crime. is. not. real. OCD. is. hell. (and anything else that may cause intrusive thoughts.) but it does not define you. your thoughts will always, always come secondary to your actions. you're gonna be fine.

a therapist i had for a while told me that sometimes having intrusive thoughts is a response to trauma recovery.

You are safe, but your brain thinks you're not, so it throws scary shit at you to try and put you back into that learned hypervigilance.

what works for me, when this happens, is just gently reminding myself that i am safe, it's okay, it is alright. and then i distract myself forcefully. the thoughts usually disappear within a few minutes.

(obviously this won't work for everyone and if you're having intrusive thoughts i strongly recommend therapy)

Hello! Well, this is very much based on personal perception and preference, isn't it? Not really any point in comparing and arguing about how we each differently interpreted less than a handful of lines of dialogue in which the aforementioned characters interact with each other, that'd just be a silly thing to do with both our times.

But if you are interested to know why I like Karlach and Astarion as a couple in their own merit, I have an explanation for that here!
