Prompt free to a good home:

Another one I’ve tried to write but couldn’t get a groove with it. (Maybe it’s already written? If so please point me in that direction!)

A feel like there are a decent amount of fanfics with Jane having some kind of PTSD. But there are a lot less of Maura having it also. (Even though I think Maura would actually seek professional help. (Which! Sidebar: would also be a good story to write!))

A story where Maura and Jane are going to a charity auction/event/conference/whatever. The first one after Killer in High Heels. Maura doesn’t really want to go, but she has to face this. She enjoys those events and is not going to let Brad ruin it for the rest of her life.

So she goes with Jane. Something causes her to have a panic attack in the bathroom. (A man getting too close? Someone offering her a drink she doesn’t know? It’s too crowded? Too loud? Who knows!) Jane finds her and transforms into ULTRA PROTECTIVE JANE who will bulldoze anyone who even gets NEAR Maura until they’re outside.

Jane takes her home and they cuddle. It’s soft and a little bit sad.

Maura is a lot harder for me to write, but I’d love to read this! So if someone wants to go for it, please do! Or if it’s already been done - please point me that way! Thank you!

Prompt: I’ve always liked the song Begin Again by Taylor Swift. And every time I’ve listened to it I’ve always thought that it would make a really sweet Rizzles AU from Maura’s perspective. 

Like just after she breaks up with Garrett. When she’s in medical school and Jane’s like on her second or third year of being a beat cop. I’ve tried writing it, but couldn’t really get into it. So, I thought I’d throw that out there!

(established) Maura calls Jane at work to say she’s going into labor, and right as Jane grabs her coat to race to the hospital, there’s some police emergency that requires all hands on deck and Cavanaugh says if she leaves, to leave her badge and for the first time realizes her job is no longer her #1 thing

(canon) Jane shows up at Maura’s place late at night to finally tell her how she feels, but panics and chickens out when Maura opens the door. Maura sees her looking all anxious and thinks she came over because she had a nightmare, and pulls her inside to comfort her. Jane is like uhhhhh would it be wrong to just go with this

(strangers) Maura is sitting on a bench outside her class reunion too anxious to go inside because she’s single and feels socially awkward. Jane walks by, asks if she’s ok, and sympathizes bc she recently felt weird about being single at her own reunion. She volunteers to be Maura’s pretend girlfriend, saying she can even make a big scene and dump her if she wants for social cred

Rizzles AU:

Jane and Martinez are being sent undercover. They are going in as newlyweds, moving into their first home. Due to traffic, Jane and Maura arrive at the house first. With their normal banter in play, the two women get busy unloading Jane’s supposed belongings (aka…equipment) from her undercover SUV. Before they realize it, they are being inturpted by the next door neighbor, who comes over to introduce herself. A misunderstanding during their conversation leads the woman to believe Jane and Maura are her newlywed neighbors. A paniced Jane, a call to lieutenant Cavaugh and by the time Martinez arrives with the moving truck and some of the other detectives, things have changed. Jane and Maura are now the undercover couple on the case.

Ways to un-stick a stuck story

Do an outline, whatever way works best. Get yourself out of the word soup and know where the story is headed.

Conflicts and obstacles. Hurt the protagonist, put things in their way, this keeps the story interesting. An easy journey makes the story boring and boring is hard to write.

Change the POV. Sometimes all it takes to untangle a knotted story is to look at it through different eyes, be it through the sidekick, the antagonist, a minor character, whatever.

Know the characters. You can’t write a story if the characters are strangers to you. Know their likes, dislikes, fears, and most importantly, their motivation. This makes the path clearer.

Fill in holes. Writing doesn’t have to be linear; you can always go back and fill in plotholes, and add content and context.

Have flashbacks, hallucinations, dream sequences or foreshadowing events. These stir the story up, deviations from the expected course add a feeling of urgency and uncertainty to the narrative.

Introduce a new mystery. If there’s something that just doesn’t add up, a big question mark, the story becomes more compelling. Beware: this can also cause you to sink further into the mire.

Take something from your protagonist. A weapon, asset, ally or loved one. Force him to operate without it, it can reinvigorate a stale story.

Twists and betrayal. Maybe someone isn’t who they say they are or the protagonist is betrayed by someone he thought he could trust. This can shake the story up and get it rolling again.

Secrets. If someone has a deep, dark secret that they’re forced to lie about, it’s a good way to stir up some fresh conflict. New lies to cover up the old ones, the secret being revealed, and all the resulting chaos.

Kill someone. Make a character death that is productive to the plot, but not “just because”. If done well, it affects all the characters, stirs up the story and gets it moving.

Ill-advised character actions. Tension is created when a character we love does something we hate. Identify the thing the readers don’t want to happen, then engineer it so it happens worse than they imagined.

Create cliff-hangers. Keep the readers’ attention by putting the characters into new problems and make them wait for you to write your way out of it. This challenge can really bring out your creativity.

Raise the stakes. Make the consequences of failure worse, make the journey harder. Suddenly the protagonist’s goal is more than he expected, or he has to make an important choice.

Make the hero active. You can’t always wait for external influences on the characters, sometimes you have to make the hero take actions himself. Not necessarily to be successful, but active and complicit in the narrative.

Different threat levels. Make the conflicts on a physical level (“I’m about to be killed by a demon”), an emotional level (“But that demon was my true love”) and a philosophical level (“If I’m forced to kill my true love before they kill me, how can love ever succeed in the face of evil?”).

Figure out an ending. If you know where the story is going to end, it helps get the ball rolling towards that end, even if it’s not the same ending that you actually end up writing.

What if? What if the hero kills the antagonist now, gets captured, or goes insane? When you write down different questions like these, the answer to how to continue the story will present itself.

Start fresh or skip ahead. Delete the last five thousand words and try again. It’s terrifying at first, but frees you up for a fresh start to find a proper path. Or you can skip the part that’s putting you on edge – forget about that fidgety crap, you can do it later – and write the next scene. Whatever was in-between will come with time.

Rizzoli and Isles AU headcanon

Just watched a commercial for ‘Madam Secretary’ coming to cbs this fall.

All I could see was a Rizzoli and Isles AU where Jane Rizzoli is a single mother (or not) and one badass wild card in the political arena.  After the tragic death of the Secretary of State she was asked to step in to complete his current term in office.  Maura Isles is the behind the scene woman assigned as her adviser/personal appearance stylist which really means she was hired by the State Department to control the Madam Secretary and her disorderly staff.

While attempting to improve this brazen woman's entire image by hopefully softening her sharp edges as well as her choice of clothing attire Maura will find herself in deeper water than she’s ever treaded before.  She is figuratively and literally brought into the line of fire trying to keep up with Jane and her unconventional tactics.  Frustrated by having to do major damage control for a woman who seems to careless plus having to smooth all the ruffled political feathers just hoping to save her job.

During all of this chaos and mayhem their natural attraction brings rizzles taking these two very different women from hating one another to love and romance.
