Another 3d idea I had for my comic, in the story of the landlady, it describes billy weaver drinking a cup of tea that tastes like almonds (because it's actually has cyanide in it.) So I got a mug and draw one of my pages onto it, it was a very quick drawing but I enjoyed doing it. The following day I went into fabrication and asked them if I could fill the tea cup with coloured silicon to make it look like there was tea. The process was fun and easy and I'm definitely going to try it again.

Trying to think of more ideas and developing my panels I came across some building blocks shaped like houses. So in the end I made miniature streets of bath out of, I think they make a goodaddition to my work, along side my 2D work

i’ve been using alot of tracing paper and chinagraph pencils lately to make my pieces and its so much fun, this is tracing paper layers of my map of Bath, i decided to try a change of perspective in the map rather than a vertical birds eye view.

although my trip to Bath was useful, my pictures i took werent good enough for reference on a particular panel i wanted to make.

so using advice from my friend ella, i made my own georgian house, it’s good for reference and getting proportion of rooms in the house right.

trying out some colouring for the book, i drew out a picture of what i think the landlady’s house would look like and went with it, i really would like to now have a blue and yellow colour pallette in my book. im not sure about this colour of blue however, i need to look into colouring on photoshop and maybe buying some new pencils for my sketch books.

From a uni workshop we dis with George sanders Jackson, a bristol based animator. We were given a task to bring in an object of value to ourselves and create a narrative with it. I decided on bringing in my bracelet my boyfriend gave to me at boomtown festival in 2013. Using details from the bracelet, I zoomed in and created the night sky over the festival fields. I really enjoyed his workshop as I used to use charcoal quite a lot, and it helped me think more about narratives and a new perspective.

so i gave the first page a try on photoshop, it illustrates billy weaver getting off the train and getting to the streets, i used the shape of Bath Spa train station as the panel itself to bring the panel into the story more.

I tried using a colour palette similar to jakob hinrich, scanning in the images and then colouring over them in photoshop....

it didn't agree with me...

i feel that colouring is too flat especially with my style of working, separating the files into more limited palettes made me think that i should simplify what i’m doing with colours and focus more on the narrative itself.

through this project i’ve been getting alot of inspiration from different forms of narrative, whether it be paintings or films.

1 and 2: Pieter bruegel, a painter from the 1500′s, creative landscapes filled with story.

3 and 4: Wes anderson’s set design and using set colour palettes for each of his movies depending on the story.

5 and 6: Jakob Hinrichs’ Traum Novelle using a simple red blue yellow palette in his graphic novel that blends to create other colours, he’s especially been a big impact on me as he did a talk with us about his work.

7: Alfred hitchcocks cinematography and story boarding in the film Psycho, with harsh lighting and contrast and a storyline that inspired roald to create his own strange motel.

Seeing as Bath is only 15 minutes away, I decided to take a trip up there to take some pictures of the city and do some sketchbook work too. The story describes that billy finds the hotel in a street with no shops and identical looking houses, so i took a map from the train station and looked around.

the circus and the royal crescent were good places to look definitely, there were a lot of streets around that fit the description. it was good to have a look around as i now can get good reference of the city and the Georgian architecture.

it’s given me alot of ideas of what i can do with certain pages for my book i want to make, such as the train station being the first panel, and even using the map of Bath in the book.

after thinking about a narrative i came to a final decision, i decided on illustrate the short story of The Landlady By Roald Dahl.

a story about a young man called billy weaver who arrives in bath for a business trip, he needs to find a place to stay and comes across a bed and breakfast run by an innocent seeming woman. it turns out she kills her guests and preserves them in their rooms using taxidermy.

i’m really excited to get on with this as its well descriptive and i’m excited to learn more about created narratives and experimenting with perspective and colour palettes.

I looked around for more reference on taxidermy and I managed to find “Dig haushizzle”, an independent shop that sells refurbished furniture and Taxidermy. they have their own taxidermist that supplies quail chicks and budgies, she also put on a taxidermy course at the shop!

rather than carry on my project with the idea of recycling and rubbish, i wanted to move looking at taxidermy, so where better than bristol museum for my first reference

..unfortunately the museum have put all their taxidermy in storage to refurbish the area.

i decided to take a look around the galleries anyway, and alot of the artwork in their had a lot of one panel narratives, showing stories of multiple people.
