Eyes widened in surprise as the offering was made. He smirked to himself for a moment. What a sucker. He would have done it even without a bribe, but that only sweetened the deal. He reached out, trying to snatch them before there could be any more conditions.

“Sure thing! Now hand ‘em over.”

               “ nee, len – !  come here, quick ! “

      “Yeah? Did you need something?”

Car horns filtered in through the cracked window, serving as a reminder of their new setting. The calendar marked their second week away, yet it had felt so much longer-- or like it had occurred a few days prior. The image of his sister’s stern face proposing the idea he’d never felt brave enough to utter was still fresh. Len never dared to ask what had brought her to that point, but that was most likely for the best.  

His fingertips grazed the credit card in his pocket absentmindedly as he searched for something to say. The situation still felt like it could be a little too delicate, though he wanted to try to lighten the mood regardless. With the card in between his index and middle fingers, he held it out to obstruct his sister’s view as she passed.

“I’m tired of being inside.      Want to go shopping?”
