About Jo March from Little Women

Wow. I didn’t see any of the movies so I’m head over heels for the upcoming adaptation. I’ve read Little Women again for like nth time, but first in the full version. I just couldn’t get enough time. So what’s my opinion? I mean everyone makes mistakes. Amy burning the manuscript? Or Laurie almost ruining Meg-Brook realtionship? They were too young to actually understand the situation and responsibility for it as a whole. So why am I so upset after reading the book?

1. Jo didn’t marry Laurie. Instead, she married Bhaer. Now what’s the problem? I mean the guy is almost the same age as her father, I know that some of you might not think of it as a great problem, but for me it was just too much. I mean Jo just could have stayed solo till the end just as how much she wanted. Also Laurie could have got some perserverence to wait for Jo, if he had waited like so many years to actually tell his feeings to Jo. I know that Laurie was uncomfortable with being turned down , but that doesn’t mean he can just go to Europe and get another girl...? For Jo, she could have just remained single. She just wanted to be friends with Bhaer, why couple them together? If she could stay in friendly terms with Laurie, why couldn’t it happen with Bhaer, who could have become a life mentor for her?

2. I don’t hate Amy. It’s true that Little Women is quite Jo-centered, but Amy wasn’t that hateful character to get all the badmouthing even after 120+ years. True she was a spoilt child, but she grew up well, she became a quite independent lady-like character who could even scold Laurie. Now comes my problem. After scolding Laurie, how did it just become love???? LMA could have just coupled them up with fine men and women who were unrelated to the March family. I just don’t understand why they were coupled. I know that they just had their own love story.... However, I didn’t see this Laurie character who would go for the sister if he couldn’t “get” Jo.... It seemed quite off for me. Also it mocked me how Mr. Lawrence reacted to the marriage of Laurie and Amy. I thought that he was in the JoxLaurie camp, then I felt betrayed. I felt so sad, seeing Amy and Laurie even considering to give out money for Jo and Bhaer. It was too cruel to pity Jo, just because they had more money. Even Laurie as a youngster didn’t do that. I was so mad at the second half of the second book.

It would have been nice if Jo and Laurie ended up together after 10+ years. I didn’t want Jo to reconsider Laurie right after turning him down. Hypothethically, If Jo could fall in love with Bhaer, why couldn’t she change her mind for Laurie? If she couldn’t reconsider, I would hve still supported her staying with her parents, but marrying Bhaer was just somehow too much, off limits....

I’m so sad that after reading the book I still have the movie break my heart again...

Gryffindor: the adrenaline rush after riding a roller coaster; loud laughter from everyone in the room; always feeling included; when you can't stop smiling; inappropriately timed jokes in necessary environments; getting high-fived by a stranger; the feeling of being bear hugged
