I've been looking forward to coming out to Macey and the Omaha Reservation the most. My father came out to the "Rez" when he was 22 for his first real job, working at the newly built high school. This leg of the trip is sure to be the hardest part of the journey for my father. Most of the kids he was teaching were only 4-6 years younger then him, and many have died in the intervening years. @iantom here sharing moments from my father, @tomqueque, son trip around Nebraska visiting family and old friends. #nebraska #macey #omaha #bw #roadtrip #travel #everydayeverywhere #goeseveron
Our very fist stop was to visit Grandma Betty and Grandpa John, they hang out with Jesus a lot these days. They're buried in a little plot near Davey, Nebraska where my Grandma Betty was born, and graduated high school at the age of 14. I never really had a chance to know my grandfathers, but I was blessed with two Grandmothers who lived into their 90's, and even though I was the youngest on both sides, both always knew what was going on in my life. Grandma Betty would always clip out articles that had anything to do with India when I started going 8 years ago. I miss those little clips of newspaper. Betty, raised 9 children, for all intents and purposes, by herself. She moved her family to Mexico and would spell check and type up her husband the corn geneticist's papers for him. She was and always will be an amazing inspiration in my life. Not only for her hard work, but her spirit and as model of how one should treat others. My name is Ian Thomas Jansen-Lonnquist, @iantom. I'll be sharing photos from a roadtrip my father, @tomqueque, and I embarked on across Eastern Nebraska to see the places where my father grewup and to catch up with old friends. This is a collaborative project, the camera on my #iphone is broken, so the project was completely shoot on my dads phone, and my dad hasn't figured out how to turn the “noir” filter off thus the BW. Enjoy. #nebraska #midwest #roadtrip #goeseveron #goes_ever_on #everon #everydayeverywhere #everydayusa #travel #bw

After growing up in New England I'm always amazed by how much space there is in the midwest. Even the farming here so spread out. When I get back to New England I look at the farms and I'm amazed how much they pack into such a small area. This photo is also a detail of my dads, newly acquired soul patch, he says he grew it because of winter boredom, but I think he just likes it and is waiting for my mom to notice :) My name is Ian Thomas Jansen-Lonnquist, @iantom, I'll be sharing photos from the trip my father, @tomqueque, and I embarked on across Eastern Nebraska. #nebraska #midwest #roadtrip #goeseveron #goes_ever_on #everon #everydayeverywhere #everydayusa #travel #bw
Waiting for our connection between Chicago and Omaha, Nebraska I spotted this mother, son duo making their way through the terminal. Traveling with parents changes so drastically over time, from a one sided herding operation, where the kid relies totally on their parent to take care of every detail. Flights, rides, parking, bubblicious gum, comic books, and snacks. But now that I'm an adult, I found myself as a collaborator, even in-charge of navigating our delays, and cancellation. I love helping, and other adulthood responsibilities. But part of me still wishes I was being dragged along on wheelie luggage. My father and I took a mini-roadtrip around the state where he, my uncles and aunts grew up. We plan to meet the people and see the places that populated the stories I remember so vividly as they were told and retold as we drove here and there, sat for ice cream, or fished. These stories, and the people in them, helped to eventually shape him into the man, husband and father I know him as today. My Dad (@tomqueque) and I (@iantom) walk from the main house on the Athey Farm toward the old farmhouse on the hill, where they keep their horse and half of their beef cattle herd in Walthill, Nebraska. Larry and Nancy Athey were some of my father's best friends when he was teaching high school on the Omaha Reservation. Many of his stories started with “the Athey's....” or “one night at Larry and Nancy's,” I could always tell they were people he held in high esteem. Unfortunately they didn't reconnect for many years until my dad heard of Larry's death a few years back, spurring him to travel back to #Nebraska. #roadtrip #goeseveron #goes_ever_on #fatherandson #everydayusa #everydayeverywhere We're taking this mini-roadtrip around the state where he, my uncles and aunts grew up. We will see 2nd cousins, meet old drinking buddies, his students from his first job on the Rez, shoot guns, have awkward conversations with people he loves that share radically different political views and of course to see and walk the land. My older brother and sister have never been, perhaps have never asked to go. We all have our role in the family, I suppose mine is that of sentimentality, a warm choking need to preserve, to brush up against a time that is not my own and hold it for a moment. So while my mother and sister see the lights of Paris, we will be in Nebraska, the Paris of the plains. We're leaving Iowa today to head back to New York. It's been a great trip to see family and eat food, but it's time to get back and make some money. I've probably gained a few pounds this visit. We got a decent blizzard and won the chili cook off. Here's one more photo for the road (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Marion, Iowa)
Heather lays down in a sunspot in the basement of her dad's house. Our flight was canceled due to winter storm Linus, so she worked from home to make up the day we missed. I can't complain, though. An extra day with family in minus temps of the Midwest is better than a wintery-mix day in New York (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Marion, Iowa)
Carly and I have been bonding. Plus, she needs someone to snuggle with as the temperature outside is about -6. No worries. The day will mostly be spent making beer with my father-in-law (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Marion, Iowa)
The sisters are all super bowled out (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Marion, Iowa)
We are snowed in at my mother-in-law's house, so we're watching movies all day before the super bowl. Donovan up there has no idea there's another orange kitty on TV (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Marion, Iowa)
We woke up to this. Super bowl plans look to be canceled, although we are heading to Heather's mom's house for lunch (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Hunter's Ridge Golf Course)
Grandma and Heather pet Bailey under the table during the chili cook off. Heather and I ended up winning "People's Choice" for our turkey and sausage white chili. Superglad we won, though I'm not sure how we'll transport out trophy back to NYC (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Solon, Iowa)
23 chilies where entered in the 11th annual competition. Three awards are given out: people's choice, chef's choice and judges choice. No official count, but there had to be about 100 people there throughout the day (photo by @andrewlamberson) (at Solon, Iowa)
The cook off has begun in Uncle Jerry's barn. 25 entrants will be graded on 5 categories. Competition is stiff and very diverse, with Texas, Cajun and white chili all represented (photo by @andrewlamberson)
